Features109 Luck Be a Lady

What happens when lady luck goes full tilt in the gritty world

of underground gambling with only her swagger and the

latest bright and bold nail polish colors? You get a lady whose

luck seems to never run out…or does it? Showcasing this

season’s bright and bold color choices, we don’t think it’s safe

to bet on black — or red.

118 The Magic of Marbleizing

The marbleizing nail art technique is so simple — just

swirl colors together to make them look like the technique

namesake of marbles — and so fl exible. You can create a

never-ending stream of diff erent looks just by switching

up the color family, changing the medium, or tweaking the

direction of the strokes.

122 The “Perfect” Nail

What makes the perfect nail? How do you defi ne the

picture-perfect acrylic pink-and-white sculpt? NAILS

combined contributions from CND education materials,

Young Nails’ Greg Salo, and former NAILS Top 25 competitor

Lynn Lammers to help draft guidelines for the quintessential

“perfect nail.”

134 License to Serve

Navigating the ins and outs of a simple act of hospitality

could leave you dizzy and confused. Before you stock the

At a photo shoot earlier this month we asked nail tech (and NAILS blogger) Maggie Franklin to create the “perfect” sculptured pink-and-white nail. We intended to run a pictorial article diagramming what a perfect nail looks like and how you can create such a look in the salon. When the editorial and art teams brainstormed the idea, we saw a very natural-looking nail that appeared to be the extension of the model’s actual nail. In our minds, that meant no stark whites, no intense pinks, and an oval shape extending only slightly over the fi ngertip.

What we found out over the course of putting together the story and taking the photos was that not only was the perfect nail pretty hard to achieve, but “perfect” is certainly in the eye of the beholder.

Not only is the idea of the perfect nail completely subjective, the act of actually creating a perfect nail is easier brainstormed than done. Is it even possible to create a perfectly sculpted pink-and-white? Isn’t this the goal of every nail competitor? So it turns out we kind of put Maggie on the spot and asked her to do something without fully explaining our vision. As she sees it, there are many different types of “perfect” nails. (When I asked her in an e-mail to describe her perfect nail she said, “A perfect nail is sleek and clean with straight lines and no lumps or bumps. No matter what the shape or style you are doing, the fi nished nail should look like it was done that way on purpose, with care and attention to detail; not sloppy and given up on.”)

On top of all this, we wanted to show the nail blown up to fi ll an entire page. That meant that every little detail would be showing. How often do you have to worry about that in your everyday set of salon pink-and-whites? Does anyone really do picture perfect nails on a daily basis?

It’s no secret that we use Photoshop to clean up little things in some photographs, although our general philosophy for our cover nails is to do as little work in Photoshop as possible. We’ll correct skin tone, clean up shadows from lighting, and maybe touch up a stray cuticle area or sidewall. But for the most part, we expect our cover techs to do their best to make the nails as close to perfect as possible. Because if we create a beautiful nail for our cover that can’t be replicated in real life, what sense does that make? (Full disclosure: we did have to do some Photoshop work on the “perfect nail” in the story on page 122 to match up with the tips we are offering.)

Perfection isn’t realistic when you’re trying to get the client in and out of your chair quickly and you’re seeing multiple clients a day. But near perfection should be something you strive for with each client in the salon. It’s better they leave thinking, “Wow, look how amazing my nails look.” Rather than, “These nails are a little thick and the smile line is crooked.”

Our tips for achieving the perfect nail are actually ways you can achieve a “more perfect” looking nail. Because let’s be honest, nobody is perfect. And if they are, I might be a little scared of them.

Log on to www.nailsmag.com to answer

this month’s question and check back here

to see what other nail techs have to say.

}{on your mind

I am not able to work as a hairdresser because my license from the United States is not accepted here. Germany requires an apprenticeship of three years to become a licensed hairdresser. (The funny thing is to become a nail tech, you need no license at all. So everybody and their mother are able to call themselves a nail tech!)

I went back to my old job since I still need to make money. We have already been here for two years, and this entire time I have been worried about having to start all over once we go back to the United States since I have not been able to improve while we are in Germany.

I have been doing nails for a hobby for a while now and as I am getting better at it I have been wondering if I would even have a chance to get hired in a salon with a cosmetology license and not a nail tech license.

Every time I get the new NAILS Magazine I get excited and want to try all of the new things right away. I start dreaming about working in a cute salon with nice co-workers and nice customers and becoming an awesome nail tech who does the craziest nail art.

Well, my spirit was raised all the way into the sky when I read the article and saw that there are actually salon managers who want to train their new techs and who are not looking for new employees who think they are already perfect in everything.

I was so excited to read that having a humble attitude and wanting to learn and succeed is also an important part in getting hired.

This article has inspired me to go for it.

LOVE THAT NAIL ART I just want to express how wonderful your Nail Art Gallery website is. I have gotten so much better at creativity and freehand designs. To see this much talent is amazing, and it needs a place like this to help others who are coming up in the ranks and experimenting with nail art designs. I hated having to search the web for just one design and here you have thousands in one place. Thank you for giving us artists a place to display and share our art!

Lori RadeckiVia e-mail

Editor’s Note: We’re glad you found us Lori. For those of you who haven’t signed up yet, go to nailartgallery.nailsmag.com to view all of the images or set up your own profi le. We’ve recently made some big changes to the way you can view and peruse through the nail art. We hope you enjoy.

DISCOURAGED NO MORE I just wanted to say thank you for the article “The Right Person for the Job” in your November 2011 issue. It totally encouraged me and took a lot of pressure off of my shoulders. I am a hairdresser turned nail tech who is currently kind of stuck.

I am a German citizen married to a U.S. soldier and when we moved to the United States from Germany four years ago, I fulfi lled a dream and went to cosmetology school. I only worked as a hairstylist for a few months after graduation because we were stationed in Germany again after only two years in the U.S.

I AM ONE OF THE CRAZY ONES I just had to share with

you that you have thrown me into a full-blown anxiety

attack. It’s not just the feeling I used to get when my NAILS

Magazine would come. This was a real one. I just re-

started my subscription and the December issue was my

fi rst one in a couple of years. I’m proud to be one of the

“crazy ones” that you referred to in your December “On

My Mind: Think Diff erent” column. I am in great company

and can’t wait until my next creation. Thank you. I really needed that.

As a creative person in a creative job in a

creative industry, I’d like to take a moment to

remember Steve Jobs. The founder of Apple,

Jobs encouraged not only employees of his company to

think differently, he also encouraged the world at large to

think differently. He elevated our expectations for personal

computers, music, communications, and even animation.

Even if you aren’t an Apple fanatic (like I am), you probably

still are benefi ting from Jobs’ genius. Because not only did he

push his own company to take risks and push boundaries, he

also pushed his competitors to do the same.

When Apple launched its “Think Different” campaign in

1997, the ads were unique and inspiring. They included imagery

of creative geniuses such as Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison,

Mahatma Gandhi, Bob Dylan, Jim Henson, Pablo Picasso,

and Miles Davis. With Jobs’ death and all of the subsequent

pop-up memorials for him, I’ve been reminded of the text of

these ads. And I actually think they relate to you — nail artists

and others in the beauty industry — so I’d like to share those

words here:“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfi ts. The rebels. The

troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones

who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And

they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them,

disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing

you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They

invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create.

They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they

have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and

see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never

been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on

wheels? We make tools for these kinds of people. While some

see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people

who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are

the ones who do.”In our nail microcosm, you are the crazy ones. You see things

differently. You create art on tiny canvases. You fi gure out ways

to use products in unique and interesting ways. You challenge

the status quo. You explore and invent. And while some people

might not understand your passion or your art, I see strokes of

genius. I am inspired by you all. I urge you to continue to push

the boundaries. Remember to “think different.” And never,

ever be afraid to be one of the crazy ones.

Think Different

Video Correction: In the article “9 Easiest Nail Art Designs to Master [Bonus: 4 Diffi cult Designs That are Worth the Effort]” in our January issue (p. 158), NAILS inadvertently ran the incorrect photo with the Floral French step-by-step by Robin Moses. Here’s the correct photo, and you can view the written instructions and the video tutorial for this design at www.nailsmag.com/9EasyDesigns.

Big Book Correction: In The 2011-2012 Big Book, the listing for Colorpops International was incorrect. You can fi nd Colorpops online at http://shop.colorpops.com.

I will take advantage of the time I have remaining here to improve my nail skills. Once we go back to the States I will be more positive about fi nding a job and won’t let anybody discourage me.

Here is a picture of me reading my NAILS Magazine at the salon where I just started working. I returned to working at a salon after homeschooling my son for

the past four years. I am faithful at lugging my NAILS Magazine around everywhere to keep up on the industry and enjoy the tidbits I learn from it. I have been a nail tech for 16 years but have been in and out of the industry often for different happenings in life but have always kept up to date with the magazine. Thank you for all of the info that you provide. I am constantly learning from it.

Cuccio Naturalé Supports BunnyLuvAs an avid supporter of ethical treatment for animals and the manufacturer of a cruelty-free line of spa products, Cuccio Naturalé has donated gift baskets to support the efforts of the Bunny Luv Rabbit Resource Center in Van Nuys, Calif., and has helped save the lives of hundreds of rabbits. The rescue center is a rehabilitation center for bunnies of all breeds and ages that is dedicated to providing a safe haven for abandoned, abused, and neglected rabbits as they await adoption into new homes. Unfortunately, many people get a pet rabbit as a novelty item for a child or for Easter without understanding the responsibility of having such a pet and these pets are later abandoned. Rabbits are also frequent victims of animal experimenters because they are mild-tempered and easy to handle, confi ne, and breed often.

Are There Nail Files in Outer Space?NAILS’ own contributing editor Erin Snyder Dixon was one of 50 lucky @NASA Twitter followers to be selected to participate in the NASAtweetup on November 8 hosted by NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. We asked her about her exciting glimpse behind the scenes.

How did you get selected to attend?Snyder Dixon: Fifty people who interact with

the NASA Twitter account were selected lottery-style from applicants all over the country. It was exciting to see how many people fl ew in to experi-ence something right in my own backyard. [Erin lives in nearby Newport News.] I was thrilled to be chosen since NASA has played a big part of my life. My grandfather Pinky was an electrical engineer, spending some of his time at the wind tunnels there, so I went armed wearing his space capsule pin. I also brought photos of my grandfather Tip, who worked in the materials lab.

What were some of the highlights of the event?Snyder Dixon: After a tour of the hanger,

we were treated to a session of autographs and information with astronaut and shuttle pilot Susan Kilrain. I had to chuckle when she said motherhood was harder than fl ying the shuttle. During the presentation, it came up that they don’t wear shoes in the space shuttle — they don’t even pack them. And yes, of course someone had to ask about the infamous diapers.

When it came my turn, I wanted to know if they took nail fi les to space ... and makeup. Hey, nails still grow and she looked pretty darned good in all the photos! She said they pack nail clippers but no fi le. Hmmm. And, yes, they take some makeup along. She also shared that the great thing about zero gravity is no wrinkles. How cool is that? Maybe we could learn something about beauty from these shuttle missions.

What else was memorable about the visit?Snyder Dixon: I was captivated about how much the research facility had

touched my life in ways I never knew. They do crash tests to ensure safety, they developed little winglets for the tips of planes that save gas, pioneer nonstick coat-ings, help predict weather, research lower emissions fuels ... the list went on and on. After touring the Infl atable Lunar Habitat (think camping in space) and the Transonic Facility (where we were treated to a snack of deep frozen Cheese-its), we wrapped up the day by witnessing the Orion splashdown test at the Hydro Impact Basin. >>>

Do you think of yourself as

an entrepreneur? If your

answer is no, you might want

to think again. If you have

the courage, determination,

and resolve to open your

own business you defi nitely possess

an entrepreneurial mindset, says nail

industry success coach Trish Rock (www.

nailsalonsuccesscoach.com).

Rock off ers the following list of qualities of

an entrepreneurial mindset:

> Entrepreneurs are careful, meticulous

planners of success.

> Entrepreneurs see obstacles and

problems that arise in the pursuit of a

goal as normal experiences in life. They

are there to be solved.

> Entrepreneurs dream up adventures and

ideas that they proceed to live out. This is

the “what if” mentality.

> Entrepreneurs realize their natural

abilities and use them to the fullest.

> Entrepreneurs act rationally, not

emotionally, and constantly develop their

thinking skills.

> Entrepreneurs break conventions, go

beyond the accepted, and work through

their fears.

> Entrepreneurs create their own

businesses and see them as income-

generating mechanisms, not extensions

of their identity or an opportunity to

express their neuroses.

> Entrepreneurs use their imagining skills to

delve into their creative powers and come

up with new insights and discoveries.

> Entrepreneurs pay enormous attention to

detail and self-discipline.

> Entrepreneurs develop their inner life

(their conscious awareness through

meditation, etc.) because they realize that

abundance and the richest experiences

come from within themselves.

> Entrepreneurs have an adventurous,

creative, interesting, stimulating, and

restful life outside of their business.

CNTC Event Continues to GrowOn Sunday November 13, 70 nail professionals gathered in London, Ontario, Canada, for the third-annual CNTC Networking Event. The Canadian Nail Tech Association was formed in 2008 to provide Canadian nail professionals the opportunity to network, learn, and gain exposure to new products. This year’s event exceeded expectations and donations for goodie bags and door prizes poured in from manufacturers and distributors, according to event founder Dayna Knight and partner Laura Merzetti. “With representation this year from both sides of the border, this event is quickly becoming a must-see,” says Knight. Knight and Merzetti are already looking forward to the fourth annual event next year slated for Sunday November 4, 2012. Also in the works are plans to host similar events across Canada with local educators and vendors. For more information on the CNTC, look for them on Facebook or e-mail [email protected].

After 20 years in the beauty industry,

nail tech Amy Davis knows fi rst-hand

the diffi culties both employers and

employees face in fi nding the perfect

fi t. To fi ll this need, Davis recently founded NEMCEA, the

Nails, Esthetics, Massage & Cosmetology Employment

Agency. “I have educated for companies, I have educated

for associations, I have owned salons/spas and worked in

other salons. I know how hard it is to fi nd professionals to

work for you and for individuals to fi nd work,” says Davis.

“I decided to start this company to help professionals

fi nd jobs and salons, spas, schools, associations, manufacturers, and

distributors fi nd professionals to fi ll spots for their company.” Davis is

starting the agency in her home state of South Carolina and plans to

branch out to other states within a year. “I am also going to be educating

professionals with my company to help them discover why this industry

is so great and to get back to the basics of why we started working.”

}{on the road

MY KIND OF BOHEMIAN TOWN There is one road that runs parallel to the ocean in the hotel zone of Tulum, Mexico. That road is dotted with “eco-chic” hotels, bungalows, restaurants/bars, yoga huts, and the occasional boutique. MayaSpa Wellness Center is part of the EcoTulum Resorts & Spa group. The entire area is quite rustic, with most establishments running off solar- and wind-generated power. MayaSpa isn’t exactly the sort of spa you might fi nd back home. It’s simply an outdoor check-in desk on the side of the road and a series of open-air “rooms” outfi tted with massage tables or wooden soaking tubs.

A PEDICURE WITHOUT POLISH Obviously, as the editor of NAILS, I feel obligated to get a manicure or pedicure when I’m “on the road”, so I booked a pedicure before arriving in Tulum. Unfortunately due to some scheduling confl icts with my family, I had to cancel my original appointment and being such a laid back type of place, I “rescheduled” by walking up the beach to see when I could rebook my service. Marcela Trejo was available to give me a pedicure — a simple soak and scrub followed by a wonderful leg massage. Being that my pedicure was performed in the sand, I opted for a natural buff instead of the hassle of polish.

MASSAGE WITH A VIEW Massage and body treat-ments are way more common in the resort town of Tulum, and MayaSpa offers them in quaint structures on the cliffs over the ocean. Trejo told me there is a lot of competition in the area for therapists and during the high season (November-February) business is usually steady, but it obviously dies down in the hotter/wetter months of the summer. She said most massage thera-pists sign three-month contracts, which they have to renegotiate at the end of the term. Like many people I met while in Tulum, Trejo was open and friendly. I only wish I would have had time for one of her body treat-ments before I had to return to the real world.

> The Mayan Clay treatments are

obviously the way to go when in

Tulum. After being coated in clay

and allowing it to dry, clients are

given the option of rinsing off in

one of the open air tubs, or simply

running down for a (naked) dip in

the ocean.

> Therapists are required to get

a license and at MayaSpa they

work on commission. During the

high season they are required to

be at the spa for eight-hour shifts

in case people (like me) walk

up off the beach looking for an

appointment.

> Without an actual indoor spa and

with very few requests for pedi-

cures, my pedicure was set up in

a shaded area among palm trees

and hammocks.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTSA few baskets of products (and

for my pedicure. I didn’t really get a

good look at any of the brands they

were using.

Two hours south of bustling

FUN FACTS

The bohemian beach town of Tulum,

Mexico isn’t exactly known for its salon

services. But MayaSpa Wellness Center

had manicures and pedicures on its

salon menu so I decided to give it a try.

TECHNIQUE }

Marbled March Madness These green-sparkled toes feature both gel

marbleizing as well as pressed green glitter to make

for a fun-looking St. Patrick’s Day pedi. Young Nails

educator G. Elizondo of Bling Nails by G in Las Vegas

gives a quick tutorial on crafting this nail design.

Elizondo utilizes a “glitter press” technique innovated

by the Young Nails education team to create layered

sparkly eff ects in gel. You can check it out here, www.

nailsmag.com/ManiQ-GlitterPress.

1. After curing your gel polish layer, place dots of

two diff erent gel colors on the nail.

2. With a dotting tool, drag and swirl through the

dots (the less swirling the better the design

looks). Cure.

3. Press in loose glitter in random areas to enhance

the sparkle.

4. Apply fi nishing gel. Cure. >>>

Onycal for Healthy Nails Onycal is a new calcium powdered product that aims to improve the strength and health of natural nails while using gels and acrylics. The powder is mixed with the gel or acrylic compounds before application. According to the company, the particles of calcium powder in Onycal are a natural substance and will not melt into gels or acrylics or change form once it is mixed. And because the powder is light enough, it will not settle to the bottom of the jar when mixed thoroughly. For more information on this product, go to www.nailsmag.com/fi fi /13411.

1. Remove the lid from the Onycal jar and prepare to measure.

2. Add calcium powder to the gel. Using the spoon end of a metal cuticle pusher or a metal stirring stick, measure and mix in three spoonfuls of Onycal for approximately every 1.5 oz. of gel compound. For acrylic, mix a half-ounce of Onycal powder for every 1 oz. of acrylic powder.

3. Apply the gel/calcium or acrylic/calcium mixture according to the gel or acrylic manufacturers’ instructions. The mixtures will be transparent and can be applied over very short nails or a tip can be fi rst applied for instant length with the calcium/gel or calcium/acrylic as an overlay.

No. It will only help if you are storing the polishes for more than six months. If you open the bottle while it’s cold, moisture can condense inside. It’s risky business for little reward. — Doug Schoon is a chemist and CEO of Schoon Scientifi c Regulatory Consulting.

A nail artist can exist in the most unlikely of places, and

though NAILS keeps its attention focused on licensed nail

professionals, this unlikely non-licensed nail artist has

become a fan-favorite for his polish company employer.

Meet China Glaze’s “Gery the Shipping Guy.”

Gerardo Acevedo works in the shipping department

for A.I.I., the parent company behind well-known

nail brands like China Glaze, IBD, EZ Flow, and It’s So

Easy. When Gery saw the wide array of polish colors

he routinely sent out, he was inspired to incorporate the

varying shades into his own art. (Gery is an accomplished

artist and holds a degree in graphic design.)

He then started doing nail art on tips and nails, and when an early zebra stripe design

he did caught the eye of marketing director Irene Chao, Acevedo got a Facebook page to

promote his art and the brand, and “Gery the Shipping Guy” was born.

China Glaze has a strong social media and online presence, with the brand’s Facebook

page receiving over 42,500+ “likes” to date (www.facebook.com/chinaglazeoffi cial), and

its Twitter account (twitter.com/chinaglaze) updated regularly with new swatch photos

of client nail designs. So the addition of Acevedo helps round out the appeal of the brand.

“Drawing on a live person is much more diffi cult than drawing on a fl at, lifeless piece of

paper,” says Acevedo of his designs. “It takes some getting used to as well as getting used

to the lacquer base nail polish, as it dries very fast and I therefore must work even faster.”

But Acevedo is an avid nail artist and enjoys the challenge of creating designs that appeal

to a wide audience.

He makes festive designs for the diff erent seasons and holidays, and posts these to his

“Gery the Shipping Guy” Facebook page (www.facebook.com/GeryTheShippingGuy).

“I think people really get a kick from the fact that a guy can create cute nail designs for

women,” says Acevedo. “I try to come up with designs that women will like, and I enjoy

reading all the comments on Facebook and hope that I can help inspire others with my

Hollywood Glamour for Salons Vintage-inspired cosmetics company Bésame Cosmetics has become a star on the big screen of “The Artist,” a fi lm set in 1927 Hollywood. It was the products’ authentic packaging that helped seal the deal to get the products in the fi lm. The product line, which includes lipstick, cream rouge, and powder, has also been featured in the fi lm “The Good Shepherd” and on the TV show “Mad Men.” CEO Gabriela Hernandez designed Bésame’s red-and-gold containers, which are made of gold-plated nickel. Each container, a stylized throwback to another era, takes between six months to a year of iterations before complete. The products have proven popular in salons as well, with it being the brand’s fastest-growing segment. Wholesale pricing is available.

For spring 2012 designers are inspired by diverse infl uences,

showcasing a range of styles and lifestyles — from free and

playful to light and breezy, plus contemporary classics. The

colors likewise refl ect these diff ering moods, encapsulating

vivid brights, soft muted tones, and fun-loving pastels.

“Consumers look to spring for renewed energy, optimism,

and the promise of a brighter day,” says Leatrice Eiseman,

executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “They

have learned how color can help them alter a mood, while

providing the vitality and enthusiasm that enables them to

experiment with new looks and color combinations.” The

Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2012 predicts that

tangerine tango (shown in illustration and named by Pantone

Have a style question? (about nail art, fashion, salon decor, etc.)

E-mail it to [email protected] and check back here for an expert answer.

I’m looking for a manufacturer that sells T-shirts for nail techs with bling. Can you help me?

Regalia Rags (www.regaliarags.com) adorns its salon/spa tees with Swarovski crystals. Some of its designs include “Nail Diva” and “Because I’m the Salon Owner and I Said So!” Glitz & Glamour Accessories (www.glitz-n-glamouronline.com) also sells rhinestone apparel and accessories, including an “I Do Nails” black tee.

What is the best acrylic powder to do intricate roses with (a powder that does not get hard quickly)? Also, what’s the best type of acrylic brush to do these intricate designs?

Choose a powder with high-quality pigments. You can tell it has high-quality pigments if, when you place a bead of acrylic, it is smooth and creamy and sets up like the texture of marshmallow. The pigment should not separate from the polymer when it is wet. The working time depends on the technician. More experienced technicians like to work faster, so they add some acetone into the monomer to speed up the working time. To get a fi ne fi nish and clarity on 3-D work, it has a lot to do with your application, product control, and brush angles.

The best brush to use for fl owers would be a fl at oval size 6 Kolinsky brush that snaps to a point.

— Catherine Wong (ecsalonce.blogspot.com) is a Singapore-based nail tech and competitor who has written nail art step-by-step books

including Nail It! and NailQ Signature.

How often should a salon tweak its interior design look (little things like switching out the throw pillows, the posters on the wall, or moving around furniture)? I really like my salon’s overall feel, and I’m not sure if I should tweak things to “keep it fresh” or if I should leave well enough alone.

Adding freshness and newness to a salon is a must. It’s the little things that will keep it looking current and relevant. Adding fresh fl owers and colorful pillows to a seating area that relates to that season is an instant win. Even scented candles, which evoke the changing of that season, create a new experience to new clients. If you have the space, moving furniture into new confi gurations is an easy trick but think about adding a small interesting piece of furniture to your seating that will add character and add conversation. Something like a ceramic

ginger jar stool or tree stump side table! Artwork on walls is an investment, and I don’t recommend art pieces get switched out regularly but coffee table magazines should always be current and add other types of magazines other than fashion and gossip. Think food and travel magazines that could present

your salon as more global and well-travelled! — Bess Liscio is vice president of visual strategy at brand and design fi rm

One-Stroke, One Book You only have to do a quick search on NailsMag.com for the phrase “one stroke” to realize that this painting technique has recently been gaining popularity in nail art circles. One-Stroke inventor Donna Dewberry created the method (which allows painters to blend, shade, and highlight all in one stroke of a brush) over 15 years ago while teaching herself how to paint.

Dewberry is thrilled now to see One-Stroke painting being adapted beyond the traditional painters’ canvas, including to nails. So much so, in fact, that she includes eight nail art step-by-steps in her just-published book: Donna Dewberry’s Big Book of Decorative Painting. The nail art step-by-steps should be helpful to nail artists, but the book’s biggest strength lies in its basic introduction to One-Stroke painting. Dewberry shows step-by-step examples of how to create common fl owers, leaves, and vines, and how to put all of these components together into a cohesive design. There are also practice worksheets, in which Dewberry encourages you to put plastic over the printed examples, then paint over them to get a feel for how hard to push the brush.

The Big Book of Decorative Painting is available on Amazon.com and on Dewberry’s website www.dewberrycrafts.com.

Mural Contest

WinnersThe winner of NAILS’ 2012 Nail Mural

Contest pays homage to some of our era’s

greatest musicians. Check out the detail in

this hand-painted mural by Robert Nguyen

and in these other impressive entries.

STYLE}

It took Robert Nguyen of Salon Nouveau in Bonsall, Calif., about six hours

to complete the winning mural. “I did an instrument theme,” says Nguyen.

“I wanted to show some well known people in the music industry: Stevie

Wonder, Slash, Jimi Hendrix, Steven Tyler, and some people I made up.” To

create the hand-painted mural, he used four diff erent DNA brushes. “I didn’t

use any special techniques. All the techniques I used are shown in the “1-2-3 Nail Art” books,

which are available in NAILS’ online store.

Nguyen has never taken a formal painting class, so what’s the source of his talent? “All of my

family are artists,” he says. “I didn’t know I could paint until I started doing nails. Before doing

nails I took drafting classes. Everything I’ve learned has been from my older brother Vu Nguyen.”

BUSINESS}The Beauty Collective: A Learning ExperienceSometimes a new service or a new

tech just isn’t ready for primetime.

That’s why Audra Senkus and

Gabrielle Ophals developed the

concept of “The Beauty Collective”

at their New York City-based

salon Eve. By joining the volunteer

Collective, salon clients gain

the opportunity to receive free

services from trusted technicians

— or new faces — while the techs

themselves benefi t from a low-

stress environment to perfect a

new skill.

“Each of Eve’s nail and waxing

techs, new and current, go through

a vigorous training course for

whatever new treatment the salon

plans to off er,” says Senkus. “Once

they’ve completed the training

courses, the natural next step

is to practice, practice, practice.

And what’s a better way for the

techs to practice than on their

very own clients? As a result, we

get feedback from the clients and

based on that, we can shape and fi x

the kinks of the treatment to make

sure it is perfect before offi cially

off ering it to the public. It’s a win-

win incentive for both Eve’s techs

and the clients.” >>>

While I love the one-on-one time with clients that single rooms provide, it’s always nice when the whole salon is in on a discussion, then pretty soon the ladies are chatting like old friends. I’ve had several clients say what a great time they had with other clients who they didn’t even know beforehand. I defi nitely think the multi-station setup is better!

Monica Geyer

South Side Nail Candy, Pittsburgh, Pa.

It really depends on your target market. If you are attracting a younger clientele, then the open area might be ideal. If you are targeting a mature clientele, they may appreciate the private rooms.

Olga Little

Nails by Olga, Chicago

I love the buzz of everyone in one room. The interaction can be fun for everyone! However, I fi nd that a separate area for pedicures can be nice. It is a much more relaxing service and you can keep the noise level down.

Malea Immergluck

Yorkville, Ill.

I think it depends on if you have a full clientele or not. If you have a full clientele then a private room is ideal. But if not, you need to be in the open to

see other salon clients and interact with them so they can see you and your work. This helps grow your business.

 ffany Tucker

Mocha Nails Salon, New Orleans

An open room is better. We have clients who come in at the same time as a friend or who meet new friends at the salon while getting their nails done. Clients love the open dialogue. I also think it’s great when they get caught up in chatting — I can work a little faster when I don’t have to carry a conversation.

Kara Milner

POLISH!, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

I have a private room, and my clients love the one-on-one, the privacy, and the fact that I can create my own atmosphere to suit the client (like changing up the music to suit her preference). Being in a studio room also prevents clients from extra exposure to multiple chemical services going on at once in a multiple station salon and from having to talk over blow dryers and other conversations. Also

I should add that I do hair and nails in the same studio room; this is really convenient for my clients who come to me to get all their services in one place without having to move to another area of the salon.

Vicky Kissick

Today’s Images Salon, Avon Park, Fla.

I offer both in my salon. The pedicures are separate (and quiet), as is the esthetician room. But the nail techs and stylists are all together. I love the hum of a busy salon. If we want to interact we can, and if you look busy we have enough professionalism to not interrupt.

Lisa Anderson

Avanti Salon, Sparks, Nev.

One big room where people can interact — my clients enjoy it more. They can have a great time talking and having a laugh with each other. Clients who like it quieter usually book their appointments at less busy times.

Tara Akhtar

Beauty Junction, Sheldon, Birmingham, England

Next question:When it comes to other techs duplicating your nail art designs, is imitation the

sincerest form of fl attery? (And where do you personally draw the line; for

instance, in what cases is it OK to copy a design or use another tech’s photo

and in what cases is it not?) [Answers will be printed in the June 2012 Issue.] Share

YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO

WATER…. My biggest mistake (and lessoned learned) was when I had my fi rst apprentice at my nail studio. She’s the sweetest girl, but she came with some major career handicaps. First, she had absolutely no experience, which was fi ne because I was willing to train her from the ground up. Second, she had no car or any effi cient mode of transportation. Third, she only wanted to be a nail technician because of coercing by her older sister, so she didn’t even want to do nails to begin with.

I had been in the industry for over a decade and had always been the nurturing type. And I’ve trained many people but had never had anyone work under me. So when I acquired my apprentice, I tried my hardest to make it work. Despite the fact that she carried good conversations, she could not perform a decent standard manicure.

I held her hand and led her through it, but after nearly eight months of teaching her, or to put it bluntly “coddling a baby,” I felt like I was ready to rip my hair out. What a mistake I had made having an apprentice. It was diffi cult for me to discipline her because of her kind nature. She would pout and it would break my heart.

She couldn’t paint or do a simple French or any basic tasks, and on top of

that, she was terrifi ed of glitter. But when I realized she only came in when-ever she pleased, was never punctual, and only worked once a month (Yes! Isn’t that crazy?), I reached my breaking point and fi red her.

The mistake of hiring her made me grow as a salon owner today. Now, I’m never afraid to voice my opinion (with much grace, of course). I did the poor girl a favor though. Nails were never her forté nor her passion. I believe now she does something with customer service and retail and is fantastic at it. And letting her go made me learn to stand my ground, something I feel every strong salon owner should be able to do.

Amy Oung

Harmony Nail Studio, Warwick, R.I.

NO MORE FLAT RATES My favorite mistake so far as a nail technician is only charging a fl at rate for nails, which I currently do. I am well known for it, yet sometimes I regret it!

I never charge extra for nail art, extra glitters, Mylar, Fimo canes, decals, or anything. Some of my more intense designs, that in my opinion should probably cost well more than what I charge, only cost my clients $40 for a full set or $35 for a backfi ll.

I just feel like my clients are loyal and deserve something from me, so I strive

to be a friendly, open minded, creative, and effi cient nail tech.

Sometimes I feel as If I am “under-paid” but never under-appreciated.

My clients always talk about how they love my nail art and can’t believe how affordable it is.

Alycia Barrett

Nail Candy, Redding, Calif.

A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE I’m reminded of a time when I’d fi rst opened my salon and knew of a tech who was about to leave her salon in search of greener pastures. I put together a complete proposal outlining everything positive I could offer her if she came to work with me, the chief reason being my 15 plus years of nail knowledge I could share with her. It hurt my feelings and pride when she chose to be a solo tech in a different salon, but in the long run it worked out better for both of us.

The salon she chose had many issues and I felt it was not the right fi t for her. I tried to talk her out of starting there and told her of a different salon where I thought she’d fi nd a better salon family. She didn’t take my advice again and went to the salon she chose, where she had one bad experience after another. She fi nally left to go to the salon I had recommended, and she’s been there now for about six years.

My Favorite Mistake

Sometimes the most painful

mistakes you make, turn out to be

experiences you learn the most

from. For nail professionals, NAILS

asked what has been their “favorite

mistake” — the one that taught

them valuable lessons that continue

to serve them and help them in their

nail careers to this very day.

During this situation I was griping to a client/friend and she imparted some sage advice to me that I will never forget. She said “You can’t want something more for someone than they want it for themselves.”

It helped me put things into perspective and cut loose any ill-will I could have developed toward this other tech, and to this day I try to keep myself from getting emotionally bound up in decisions other people make that are totally out of my control anyway.

Jill Wright

Jill’s A Place for Nails, Bowling Green, Ky.

STRICTLY BUSINESS I have been a salon owner for almost two years now, and I have learned quickly that you cannot be friends with renters — only friendly. They can take advantage of that friendship. During altercation resolutions, one or the other will feel you are going to take their side. Then hard feelings happen and more confl icts can arise from that. You can never make every type of personality happy.

Alison Sanders Byford

FOOLS RUSH IN My biggest learning experience came from ordering products without researching them properly.

Julie Pecanty Perry

OH MY ACHING BACK I’ve been in this business for 22 years and my biggest mistake was NOT listening to my body —specifi cally the lower back.

LaSharn Newbill

My enHANDSments by LaSharn, Bolingbrook, Ill. & Elkridge, Md.

THE FIX IS IN Eight years ago I was a struggling nail tech fresh out of school and I told my clients I would fi x breaks for free. It has helped me to be able to do a repair quickly but I fi nd clients take advantage of the fact that it’s free.

Regina Hoffman Contreras

BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF My biggest mistake has been making exceptions for people, i.e. price breaks, not enforcing policies, and being too lenient.

FINDING YOUR SPECIALTY One mistake I’ve learned from is that as nail techs we don’t have to offer every kind of nail service. We usually start out as nail techs wanting to do and offer every nail service. Big mistake. Hone in on a specialty and you build a stronger clientele.

After the success of Houston-based Isle Pedi Spa, which has generated over $2 million in revenue since its 2003 opening, salon owner Cindy Huynh had to open a second location.

Before the idea of another Isle Pedi Spa came to fruition, Huynh was booking more appointments than she knew what to do with. She hired additional nail technicians and extended the salon’s hours — to 12 hours a day, seven days a week — but

it still wasn’t enough to accommodate her ever-growing clientele. Huynh began planning.

Finally, in July 2011, Isle Pedi Spa’s sister location was ready for business, and within months of its opening, it had already proven to be just as successful as the fi rst. Huynh estimates that within the fi rst year, they’ll make over $700,000 from the nail services alone.

Huynh strategically set up shop in the Memorial area of Houston, only

a few blocks away from two affl uent neighborhoods as well as a popular Houstonian shopping center — or the “mecca for all high-end clothing stores,” according to Huynh. This counterbalances Isle Pedi Spa’s fi rst location, which borders Rice University and a large medical center, attracting a faster-paced crowd of working professionals.

“The great thing is the clientele who work near the fi rst Isle Pedi Spa actually live near the second one, so

the salon — which Huynh describes as looking retro-modern with a splash of glam — every piece of furniture is either custom built or hand-picked. Early on, Huynh experienced diffi culty fi nding tables, chairs, and cabinets that fi t the large and unconventional space, so rather than trying to fi nd perfection, she designed it herself.

“When you’re passionate about something, everything comes to you so naturally,” says Huynh. “People always ask, ‘Who is your designer?’ They don’t believe that I took measure-ments and then sat down with a paper and pen and drew it all out myself. Doing it all myself worked out a whole lot better.”

Each room in Isle features different designs, making the salon appeal to a diverse crowd. One of the private suits is nicknamed the “purple princess suite” because it is adorned with glitzy crystals, and its walls and pillows are lined with royal purple patterns. There is also the “romantic suite,” which has a warm color scheme focused on shades of teal and gold. According to Huynh, you’ll fi nd a lot of male clients and couples occupying Isle’s suites because of the innate privacy they offer.

In total, there are over 30 crystal chandeliers throughout the spa and wall decals imported from designers in Beverly Hills. “I’ve always envisioned making the nail industry a little bit better and greater,” says Huynh. “I wanted to do something that would bring the spa-like atmosphere to customers without them having to go to a high-end spa.”

furniture to fi t perfectly. That’s how I came to the decision to open the fi rst Isle.”

All of the lotions, scrubs, soaps, and oils used in Isle Pedi Spa have been developed especially for the salon and are blended in-house by Huynh and her staff. The original manicures and pedicures also aim to give customers something they can’t fi nd anywhere else.

When Huynh sat down to create Isle’s long list of treatments, she noticed she was naturally incorporating a lot of tropical fruit like coconut, mango, and papaya. “I wanted the salon to be an escape, a paradise,” says Huynh. “So we chose to have an island theme because it was cohesive with everything we were doing.”

Isle’s signature manicure, and most popular treatment, is the Isle Naturale Manicure. Before nails are polished, clients’ hands are exfoliated with mango peel and a house-blended vanilla salt glow, dipped in a warm rose petal milk bath, and then conditioned

with a milk and honey shea butter to seal in the moisture.

The salon also has well over 20 branded pedicures treatments to choose from including Sangria Sunset Pedicure, Herbal Green Tea Pedicure, Mangolicious Pedicure, Bahama Mama Pedicure, and Peppermint Sea Breeze Pedicure. Isle’s manicures range from $24 to $40, depending on the service, and pedicures are between $24 and $70.

In the mani/pedi area of

they have the option of visiting both,” says Huynh. “The second location is still close enough to the fi rst that we are hoping to push some of our overfl ow there.”

Between the two locations, Huynh has 55 employees. Of that, 36 are nail technicians, some serving as cosmetologists as well. The Memorial area location is about 2,700 square feet with 20 mani/pedi stations total. Ten are in the main area of the salon while the rest are in private two- and four-person suites available with advanced booking.

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME

What makes Isle Pedi Spa so distinct is that everything in it — from the decor to each service offered — is custom designed by Huynh.

“I had a vision to do something different — something outside the box,” says Huynh. “I wanted to make all my products myself with natural ingredients, and I wanted all of the

Huynh. “Isle has been focused on that since the day we opened.” The salon only uses stainless steel pedicure tubs without whirlpool jets.

CLEAN HOUSE Another reason Huynh was initially interested in customizing her salon space was to make sure that cleanliness was incorporated into every detail. “Even before the stories about whirlpool jets being unsanitary, sanitation was one of my most important priorities,” says

and coziness. Large pillows and pad-

ded seats line the walls, while a hand-

The Sole Relief pedicure features fresh citrus and sliced

grapefruit in a personal foot bath. Clients also receive a

house blended grapefruit sanitizer and exfoliating bath salt.

Isle Pedi Spa’s staff also includes housekeepers who focus specifi cally on disinfecting tools. Since each nail technician has about 20 to 30 pairs of nippers, they can simply throw used equipment into a bin; the housekeepers will then disinfect them using an autoclave and re-bag the tools for future use.

“Having that many nail techs to look after, making sure everyone is properly disinfecting equipment was a big issue for me,” says Huynh. “I don’t want to take any risks, so not allowing them to clean their own tools ensures that the process is done correctly every single time.”

As a nail technician, Huynh says she learned a lot from what her previous coworkers were and weren’t doing and used those observations to better her service. “I’m very meticulous,” says Huynh. “I host monthly meetings for my nail techs, and we’re always doing continuing education or going to trade shows to improve our techniques and remain sanitary. At the end of the day, the service speaks for itself.”

RETAIL: A SMALL BUT NECESSARY

KICK On top of having televisions built into every station, a coffee bar, and mimosas on the weekends, Isle Pedi Spa also offers a handful of extra nail- and skin-oriented amenities to clients during their service. Included are neck wraps, lotions, callus

na0312salonprofile.indd 94 1/23/12 11:22 AM

softeners, and over 700 polishes and 300 gel colors to choose from.

These extra amenities not only make a client’s experience more enjoyable, but also boost retail, as Isle employees make it a point to sell everything they use. “We encourage our clients to have a beauty regimen of their own at home, so we offer a wide array of prod-ucts for upkeep in between services,” says Huynh. “My whole thing is I want to be able to offer everything to our clientele.” Huynh also pays her nail technicians 10% commission on all products they sell.

Only 3%-5% of revenue comes from retail for Isle Pedi Spa. However, Huynh considers this outcome well worth the effort. “Although only 3%-5% of our revenue comes from retail, that’s out of two million, which is a decent amount,” says Huynh. “The goal is to have the retail help pay for things like utilities or electricity bills, so an extra $5,000 to $6,000 a month is a huge kick.”

Another large source of income for Isle Pedi Spa is its gift certifi cates, which come pre-wrapped and decorated with a fresh orchid. “Clients love them because they’re already packaged nicely so they make great and easy gifts,” says Huynh. “Gift certifi cates are the best advertising because they get someone new through the door.” Huynh has calculated that about 95% of purchased Isle Pedi Spa gift certifi cates are redeemed annually.

Isle Pedi Spa has become such a marketable brand that Huynh even began licensing out the concept. Other individually owned salons can pay to use Isle’s unique menu. So far, a total of two salons — both featured on Isle’s website — are doing this. Huynh was also approached recently by real estate fi rms asking her to build a third location in a posh Texas shopping center.

“When we fi rst opened, getting into a nice shopping center was diffi cult, but after the second Isle Pedi Spa opened, it was easier to get the space we wanted.”

For the third location, Huynh plans to custom design all of the furniture again.

The RaisEase rest was designed by veteran nail

tech Jan Siegel to use with her own pedicure

clients. A stickler for neatness, sanitation, and

client comfort, Siegel — owner of The Nail

Spectrum in Sherman Oaks, Calif. — found

messy wet towels or bare feet on the fl oor during

a pedicure service unacceptable. She was also

concerned with short-legged clients who were

uncomfortable because their feet didn’t touch the

fl oor. Her solution: RaisEase, a pair of slim, sleek

foot rests that can be easily sanitized. Simply place

the durable, lightweight units on each side of the

pedicure bath. “Your client’s bare feet will gravitate

to the foot rests,” she says.

These versatile units can be used as armrests

as well. “They support and steady your client’s

arms, keeping her hands in a calm and relaxed

position, which helps avoid those annoying dings

and smudges on freshly polished nails,” she says.

AQAND }{I have noticed lately that there are monomers on the market that claim to be universal. Is there really a monomer that can be used with any acrylic system and have the product cure to the durability it should?

Liquid-and-powder systems are based on two different components that must be properly matched and mixed at the correct ratio in order to achieve the desired results. Since there are so many different types of powders avail-able, and these powders contain different levels of initiators and other addi-tives, it is impossible to develop a monomer liquid that works with any polymer powder. Claims of a “universal” acrylic liquid are marketing claims and not substantiated by the scientifi c facts. Using the incorrect combination of liquid and powder and/or using these at incorrect ratios are leading causes for service breakdown and adverse skin reactions. All products should be used properly and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Using the incorrect polymer powder with a monomer liquid would not be considered proper use.

— Doug Schoon is chief scientifi c advisor for CND.

I just learned that I am allergic to acrylates. Are there any artifi cial nail products/techniques that do not have acrylates as an ingredient?

All artifi cial nails and adhesives, including UV gels, liquid-and-powder, fabric wraps, and dips are based on some type of acrylate, which includes urethane acrylate oligomers, methacrylates, and cyanoacrylates. It would be unlikely that a person would be allergic to “all acrylates” in general, since some are highly unlikely to cause allergic skin reactions. It’s more likely that a person would develop an allergic sensitivity to specifi c acrylates. A qualifi ed medical doctor can perform various test to determine which particular type of acrylate is the cause of a skin sensitivity. Since these types of skin problems are generally caused by prolonged and/or repeated exposure, simply changing to another product and using it a fashion that can cause overexposure will likely lead to development of allergies to the new product as well. Nail professionals should work in such a way as to prevent prolonged and repeated skin contact, which will minimize the potential for developing adverse skin reactions.

What is it?

How do you get it?

How is it treated?

What can a tech do?

Pseudomonas is a common form of bacteria that can turn a client’s nails green. The bacteria can be

present almost anywhere — on plants and animals, in soil, even in water. Advanced cases will appear as

dark green or even black spots on the nail.

Most of the time, the nail bed and the nail plate do not provide a suitable environment for these bacteria

to grow. There are times, however, when conditions are perfect, and bacteria grow either on top of the

nail bed and under the natural nail, or on top of the natural nail and under an enhancement. Because

these bacteria are so prevalent, all it takes is for the skin under the nail to be compromised and then

exposed to the pseudomonas bacterium. Alternatively, when product is applied over a nail plate that

holds pseudomonas bacteria, it creates a nearly oxygen-free environment — in which these bacteria

thrive. They eat the oils and excrete an extremely dark substance. This is what we see when the nail

turns green.

The treatment for green nails is to remove the enhancement, and trim, clean, and disinfect the nail to

kill the pseudomonas bacteria. Some doctors will suggest a 1% acetic acid treatment, an antibiotic, or

an antifungal cream.

Prevention is the best treatment. The first step in prevention is a clean environment and proper

application. Protect yourself and your client by adhering to industry standards. Techs need to be vigilant

about thoroughly cleaning their implements, all salon surfaces, their own hands, and the hands and nails

of their clients. Careful cleaning and disinfection of the nail surface is essential before applying product.

Otherwise, techs could unknowingly trap bacteria between the product and the natural nail. If any of

your implements come into contact with an infected nail, immediately clean and disinfect them, wash

your hands, your client’s hands, and the surface of your work area. Pseudomonas infection is considered

a medical disorder and the client should be referred to a doctor. Techs may want to remove the product

from the nail, but if the nail has an infection, they are legally bound to avoid any form of treatment.

In the case of pseudomonas bacteria causing green spots under the nail product, the cause is always

one of two things: Either the bacteria was on the nail plate when the product was applied (due to dirty

implements or poor prep) or product adhesion was insufficient. When adhesion is insufficient, pseudo-

monas bacteria can find their way under the product through a chip, crack, or lift. Remember also to

educate your clients about nail care. During a client’s first appointment, instruct her not to pick, pry, or

glue her nails. Don’t wait until she has glued a cracked or broken nail to tell her about trapped bacteria

and green spots. When a client glues the nail, she increases the risk of trapping bacteria under the nail.

}HEALTHDefenders of the Feet

Ask a nail student what she thinks about touching strangers’ feet and you’re

likely to get a grimace. But somehow, as their careers progress, most nail techs

learn to love feet. We asked a group of techs who specialize in pedicures to tell

us how their love aff air with feet began and what they do that’s so special.

How it began: I didn’t start out liking pedicures.

At school, I refused to do them. I’d miss class on

the days of my pedicure appointments and had to

go for two extra weeks to fi nish my hours. When I

opened my own nail salon, I had a manicure client

who hadn’t worn open-toed shoes in 30 years. She

was embarrassed by the nail on her big toes due to a childhood

injury and refused to show me her feet. I had a pedicure area in the

back room with its own door. I told her we could go back there and

she could show me in private. Three months later, she did show me

and I told her I could sculpt a new toenail for her out of acrylic. The

client let me give her a pedicure and new acrylic toenail. She came

back the next day to show me her brand new pair of sandals. Ever

since that day I have loved doing pedicures. I saw how something

so simple made someone so happy.

What makes your pedicures special? My clients make my

pedicures special. Most of my clients have heath issues that

don’t allow them to maintain their feet themselves, such as

clipping toenails and applying lotion — tasks we take for granted. I

customize each pedicure to each of my clients’ needs.

How it began: I never liked touching other people’s

feet. It wasn’t until beauty school that I found a

passion for them thanks to a loving teacher and a

few wonderful clients. Where I live, most women

will get a little more funky with their polish and nail

art on the toes since this is the one way they can

express themselves in the corporate world. That’s what I love the

most — the ideas that some clients come up with. This will sound

crazy but when someone has nasty feet and you transform them

into the beautiful feet they were meant to be, your clients will love

you forever.

What makes your pedicures special? I think it’s the attention to

detail. I take my time cleaning up the cuticles and all other dead skin

so the client’s feet look and feel healthy and beautiful. Also special

is the amount of time we massage a client’s foot. Some salons in

the area only massage for two to three minutes. We make sure we

massage for a full fi ve to six minutes per foot.

Nancy Donatone McCoy, McCoy Nail Salon, Walnut, Miss.

Courtney Mendoza, Fuchsia, Mesa, Ariz.

How it began: As a new nail technician

most of my clients are middle-aged women

— many of whom are offi ce workers and

housewives who are always on their feet.

Every day I encounter dry skin, poorly kept

cuticles, and cracked heels while applying

nail designs on my clients’ toes. They often complained that

though they had been given foot spa basins as gifts, it was

diffi cult to actually do the pedicure on their own feet. The

tilting forward often led to dizziness or diffi culty breathing.

Fortunately for them I also off ered the service within my

practice. After doing a pedicure, my clients’ feet feel soft

and moist and look radiant. They often say

they don’t feel like their feet should ever

touch the fl oor again! This made me

love feet as much as I do.

What makes your pedicures

special? My pedicure

procedure, as with all my other

procedures, usually starts

with sanitation: my hands, my

implements, my equipment,

and my clients’ feet. Clients

are always impressed at how

much I sanitize and so they

feel relaxed and know their

feet are in safe hands. Before

becoming a nail technician

I specialized in homemade

spa products. I guess what

really makes my pedicures

so special is that I now use

some of them in my pedicure

service, such as the scented

bath salts for soaking the feet

and body scrubs for exfoliating

the heels. One of my favorites is

my Almond Wheat Germ Scrub,

which smells like such a treat.

How it began: I learned to love feet when I

fi rst started to take care of my own every

Saturday evening, scrubbing and polishing for

church the next day. I love sandals and

appreciate toes and heels in good condition. I

decided to become a manicurist not just to

“do feet,” but to help others appreciate and take care of their

feet. I have even taken it a step further and became an

educator specializing in manicuring to teach others the

proper way to care for their clients’ feet. I usually say “It’s not

about beauty, it’s about healthy.” Many people do not realize

how important our feet are. Our feet carry the entire body

and we do not take enough time out to rub them or pamper

them or even thank them.

What makes your pedicures special? I have a vast

selection of pedicures on my menu and we encourage our

clients to try a diff erent pedicure each time they are

scheduled. They are encouraged to try our Deluxe Pedicure or

Basic Pedicure, then move to our Paraffi n Pedicure or

every  year we  introduce a new pedicure to coincide with

Breast Cancer Awareness Month so they have something to

look forward to. Our services are by appointment only and we

encourage the client to relax and unwind while we pamper,

massage, and care for her feet. Clients are also educated on

at-home care between appointments.

Petra Vonder Newton, Nu Nails Plus, Basseterre, St. Kitts, West Indies, and Soul 2 Sole, St. Croix, U.S. V irgin Islands

How it began: When I was in nail school the last thing I was going to do was touch

someone’s feet. No way! Then six months after getting my license I got a job in a salon

and the owner booked me for two pedicures. She asked me if I did pedicures and I

said I had not but would be willing to give it a try. She gave me a video and when I got

home, I watched it and practiced on my husband. I went to work the next morning and

explained to my client that this would be my fi rst pedicure and if there was something

she did or didn’t like to please let me know. She stayed with me for nine years until she moved out of

the area. After that I took classes, read, practiced, and did whatever I could to make my service better.

In one of the classes I took, the instructor made a statement that stuck with me: “Feet are the cleanest

part of the body. We shower in the morning and they are put into socks and shoes. They don’t touch

door knobs, money, or anything else.” The more pedicures I did, the more I grew to love what I did. I

became certifi ed in refl exology and that added to my service.

What makes your pedicures special? Once I got into doing pedis, I wanted to do more than just a

manicure on the feet. I truly enjoy what I do and my guests say it shows. It doesn’t matter where I am

or what equipment I use, I always made it an oasis for my guest. We are always rushed and on the run

and this is one time when we can get our guests to sit still and help relax their minds. I get all our talking

out before the massage begins. Once I start I am quiet, lower the lights, and just let them lie back and

enjoy. I also use chilled eye pillows, heated neck wraps, and blankets to add to their comfort. That is also

the reason I wrote my book [Answering the Questions to Your Sole: Pedicure Treatments That Will Have Your

Clients Begging For More, available at NAILS’ online store] — to share what I have learned over the years

and to help those who want to take their pedicures to the next level.

Ruth Windsor, Angelic Nails, Dearborn Heights, Mich.

How it began: For years, I hated feet. Then one

day, my mom taught me how to give a basic pedi

using an old dish pan and  Palmolive soap. She

said if I got all the calluses off by the end of the

summer, she would give me $50. Being 13, that

was big money. I now know she was totally

ripping me off . But once I knew how to do it and could make

money from it, I took my little dish pan and started giving pedicures

to my family. It made me feel good to be able to do something to

make them feel good. I always thought I would be a psychologist,

because I wanted to help people and make them feel better. I took

some psychology classes and found it just wasn’t for me. Giving

pedicures, however, defi nitely gives me the feeling of helping

people. So that feeling outweighed my hate of feet.  To

me,  pedicures are like comfort food, they just make everything

better. If your feet hurt, everything hurts. There is nothing better

than slipping your feet into warm water after a long day, a break

up with your boyfriend, or your kids driving you nuts, and dishing

to your favorite manicurist. I have bonded with so many people

while I am giving them a pedicure.

What makes your pedicures special? I really care about what I

am doing and the people I am doing it on. Even though we have a

basic pedicure protocol we start out with, each and every pedicure

I perform is diff erent. A client may come in with dry heels and tell

me she has an aunt who was just diagnosed with cancer. That

client is leaving with a grapeseed treatment, paraffi n dip, oncology

info (my mom works for the Oncology Nursing Society), and a

hug. Another clients may want a new funky color to go with her

recent breakup. She gets not only her new color, but nail art and a

high fi ve.

primers & bondersWith most gel and acrylic systems, a bonder or primer is

applied to the natural nail fi rst to increase adhesion for the

enhancement. Often the term “bonder” is applied to gel

systems, and “primer” is for acrylic, but they both have a similar

function in that they bind to the keratin in the nail bed to create

a stronger bond for the enhancement product. So what are they

made of? And what is the diff erence between the two?

How Are They Different? Both primers and bonders

chemically prepare the surface of the nail for better

adhesion for the enhancement product. Primers

will work to modify the pH of the nail bed, bonding

with the keratin in the nail bed, while also leaving part of itself

exposed above the nail bed to bond with the acrylic.

Bonders will use UV light-activated ingredients to achieve a

similar effect, where part of the product is embedded with the

natural keratin in the nail, while also remaining partially exposed

to bond with the gel product.

2

1What Are They Made Of? The majority of

primers and bonders on the market consist

of about 10 different resins, which are used

in different combinations to meet the

manufacturers’ desired function. So the

ingredients in a primer can be similar to a

bonder, but a gel bonder will have an

increase in the amount of resins that react

to UV light, and the primers will focus on air-

drying resins.

A popular resin currently being used in

gel bonders is called a BISGMA, which is

UV light-activated and also popular in the

dental industry for fillings and fastening

crowns on teeth.

Older primers for acrylic systems used

acid-based primers, mostly methacrylic

acid, which is not to be confused with

methyl methacrylate (MMA). Methacrylic

acid has a chemical structure that bonds

better with the keratin in the nail and makes

it more receptive to bonding with the

acrylic enhancement product. And

methacrylic acid does not cause the

allergies that MMA does.

Most often, a primer will consist of a

blend of chemicals to reduce the acidity on

the nail bed.

Structure Is Function An interesting thing to note is

that the resins and chemicals that make up primers

and bonders are not drastically different than the

ingredients in the actual acrylic and gel enhancement products.

It’s just that the final molecule shape has a different structure

that enables it to work better as an adhesive product.

In chemistry, the actual shape of the molecule has a

strong impact on how that molecule will function or perform.

Sometimes molecules are made of similar components but

have significantly different functions and effects.

The marbleizing nail art technique is so simple — just swirl colors together to

make them look like the technique namesake of marbles — and so fl exible. You

can create a never-ending stream of diff erent looks just by switching up the color

family, changing the medium, or tweaking the direction of the strokes.

Perfection is a concept debated since antiquity, with great minds from Aristotle to Vince Lombardi quoting famously on whether perfection is something that can actually be attained, or merely striven for.

There is an inherent subjectivity in the idea of the perfect nail. What is perfect for

one experienced nail tech can be quite different for another. But the universal truth that

every nail tech will agree upon when it comes to the perfect nail is that it should take the

qualities of natural beauty already present within the nail and enhance them to create a

beautifying effect of longer and more elegant nails and fingers.

With this in mind, NAILS offers some key highlights to help aid in the crafting of

perfect — or if not perfect, as close as humanly possible — acrylic pink-and-white sculpts.

Smile Lines can make or break a nail. A perfectly symmetrical

smile line can turn a clumsy and thick set into something elegant, and

conversely the most well-structured nail enhancements can appear

sloppy if the smile lines are askew.

> A smile line should begin about halfway down the nail bed.

Corners that go into the cuticle area can make backfills more

difficult and create a drastic visual effect.

> The depth and overall balance should have a similar symmetry

with the eponychium curve.

> Square nails should have a more shallow smile line, while

oval and almond shapes can handle deeper smile lines.

naiL “perfect”THE

What makes the perfect nail? How do you defi ne the picture-perfect acrylic

pink-and-white sculpt? NAILS combined contributions from CND education

materials, Young Nails’ Greg Salo, and former NAILS Top 25 competitor Lynn

Lammers to help draft guidelines for the quintessential “perfect nail.”

na0312perfectnail.indd 122 1/24/12 1:56 PM

Page 125: Nails Magazine March 2012

MARCH 2012 | NAILS MAGAZINE | 123

The Cuticle Area is the razor’s edge for nail techs. A game of

chicken, where the tech must come as close to the skin as possible

to complete a full-coverage look, but go one millimeter over and

have enhancements compromised by lifting, service breakdown, and

unsatisfied customers.

> The enhancement should taper and thin to be flush with the nail

plate when approaching the cuticle.

> Too much product will create an unnatural and bulky look that

could lead to lifting and cracking toward the middle of the nail if the

nail is stressed or impacted.

Sidewalls are the foundation for a well-

balanced acrylic pink-and-white. They must

remain faithful to the width of the natural nail bed

while forming straight and parallel walls to create

an illusion of elongated nail beds.

> Sidewalls that taper out will lead to a wide,

clumsy extension. The free edge becomes

compromised and conflicts with the smile line

to make for an unnatural-looking enhancement.

> If one sidewall goes awry the overall enhance-

ment will be crooked.

> If the sidewalls are too narrow the structure

will be weak and can incur cracking toward the

middle of the enhancement.

The Free Edge is where you will find the most diverging opinions on what constitutes a perfect

nail. Some argue for the classic square look, while others prefer a more natural-looking oval-shaped

enhancement. We opted for the oval shape here.

> Filing becomes paramount for a proper free edge. Square free edges need to be perpendicular to the

nail bed, and ovals, almonds, and rounds must have symmetry on either side.

> It’s important to make accurate product applications to minimize filing. Oval and almond shapes

should not be filed down from square. The sculpt should dictate the shape, with the filing for perfecting. >>>

na0312perfectnail.indd 123 1/24/12 1:55 PM

Page 126: Nails Magazine March 2012

124 | NAILS MAGAZINE | MARCH 2012

The C-Curve will expose even the slightest of imperfections in a

nail enhancement. Where they may remain hidden in a top-down view

of the nail, a direct observation of the C-curve will quickly illuminate any

weaknesses in structure, thickness, and/or symmetry. They should have

a smooth, round arch and follow the contours of the finger on either side.

> Too deep of a C-curve will make it appear more like a “V”-curve, or

“U”-curve. A proper C-curve should resemble a circle or barrel.

> An overextended C-curve can appear when the sideswalls are too thick

with product. The amount of stress placed at the flex of the apex can

lead to cracking.

> C-curves that are too flat will look unnatural and gawky. >>>

The Arch of the nail is viewed best from the side. It

should have a gradual slope to it, with an apex at the stress

area to keep the nail balanced and reinforced.

> Angling your brush when applying acrylic at the cuticle

area helps create a natural arch toward the apex.

> For very long extensions, the apex needs to come

back toward the eponychium (just slightly) to provide

the extra strength needed to balance the nail.

> The arch is a gentle curve, using the

natural angle of the nail bed as a guide.

Relaxing with a glass of wine while getting those tootsies pampered at the nail salonis as common as taking in a game over beer and wings ... but could the salon be running afoul of alcoholic beverage licensing laws? Could be, if it operates in one of the state or local municipalities that regulate possession, dispensing, or sale of alcoholic beverages.

It seems simple enough. Make the right calls. Get the right permits or licenses. Continue doing what other salons have been doing without any problem for some time. Only it’s not that simple. And just because it’s a widespread practice, doesn’t mean that it’s legal or without drawbacks.

Getting Answers Everything is blurry, the room is spin-

ning, one eye is twitching, and I think I’m getting a headache. It has nothing to do with imbibing the intoxicating

liquid though. I’m making calls looking for a few answers. If I own a salon in your state, can I serve a complimentary glass of wine while my client settles in for a pedicure or manicure? Can I sell it? What do I need to do? Where do I get a license?

Starting with the letter A naturally led me to Alaska, which gave me a taste of what the rest of the U.S. had in store. Like many states, Alaska allows indi-vidual counties to opt for dry/moist status. In these areas, it may be illegal to sell, serve, or even possess alcohol. If your salon is in one of the 25+ completely dry cities of Alaska such as Emmonak, Grayling, or Scammom Bay, the answer is easy. No. I pressed the information tech further to fi nd out that an application would need to be made to determine if a license was possible. She told me that it was hard to say without knowing the particulars. In fact, the laws were “so incompre-

hensible in Alaska that even the Board didn’t understand them and they had to be totally rewritten.” Almost as an afterthought, she let me know that it’s illegal for licensed bars and restaurants to give away free alcohol.

Turns out the relationship between regulatory agencies, taxing authorities, and businesses is as murky in many places as it was a century ago. The Web has made information easier to access, but even in this age of technology almost half of the numbers listed were out of service or had nothing to do with alcohol regulation. Even if you pass go at the state level, local laws may differ. It becomes more confusing in Hawaii, Maryland, Nevada, and North Dakota where most enforcement is handled at the local level. In some cases the prac-tice has gone unscrutinized for some time but once brought to light, as it was in Bismarck, N.D., city offi cials send warning letters to businesses, letting

noon, limits it to a single drink, and only to those over 21. “You have to be careful and watch your bottom line too. Alcohol can really add to your over-head.”

Do Your ResearchIf you are already offering the

service or thinking of adding it, start researching now. Follow up any phone conversation with a letter so you have the information in writing. While navi-gating the quagmire of ABC enforce-ment, I routinely got several different answers from the same offi ce. One state, Virginia, followed up my inter-

areas so alcohol is tightly regulated. She says, “It’s OK to serve (at the state level), but not to sell without a license.” But “salons need to check with the local health department and city offi ce to see what they need to do to be legal.”

District of Columbia offi cials parroted the same view as Tennessee in one call, but later said they would have to research it further to confi rm. I’m still waiting for the answer.

Graffi ti Nail Bar in Memphis, Tenn., serves complimentary wine to clients. Lauren Scales fi rst heard about the practice of serving but not selling in nail school. She doesn’t serve until after

them know that a liquor license is required to serve any alcohol in a busi-ness — even if it’s free.

Canada Lytle of A Perfect 10 Nail Bar located in Rapid City, S.D., chose to get a license to sell beer and wine only because the state of South Dakota has very few liquor licenses to offer and they are very expensive. She advises that salons go about it the legal way. “Work with your city and you may be surprised at the support you get,” says Lytle. “It is a very unique and unusual concept so you really have to explain what it is you are trying to do and the goal you are trying to achieve.”

Lytle does charge for drinks and says, “The customers think nothing of it.” Right now, A Perfect 10 Nail Bar is the only salon in Rapid City with a beer and wine license.

In Tennessee, according to Mrs. Harris at the Alcoholic Beverage Commission (ABC), there are still dry

BEFORE YOU ADD ALCOHOL> Have a discussion with your insurance agent about alcohol liability.

> Develop an alcohol training program.

> Set up a formal system to track distribution.

> Get all rulings in writing to avoid misunderstandings.

> Be prepared for a background check when applying for a liquor license.

> Know that every application is unique in circumstance.

Navigating the ins and outs of a simple act of hospitality could leave you

dizzy and confused. Before you stock the mini bar or reach for a cold one for a client,

double-check your state and local regulations. BY ERIN SNYDER DIXON

Special agent in charge Bob Brooks was quick to point out that Virginia has a day spa ABC license. Becky Gettings, the public information offi cer, acknowledged that only 68 day spas are currently licensed in Virginia. Part of that fi gure is that nails-only salons are not eligible for licensing, nor may they serve. The day spa license requires that an establishment have both cosme-tology services and massage therapy to be considered. In addition, bona fi de day spas must adhere to local ordi-nances, zoning, etc. and are restricted to serving actual clients no more than two 5-oz. servings of wine or one 12-oz. beer per day through the complimen-tary service. Serving in a salon without a license is a class 1 misdemeanor, carrying a fi ne of up to $2,500 and/or jail time. Pretty stiff penalties consid-ering that a license is only $100 + a $65 application fee.

Many states, such as New York, Cali-fornia, and Virginia, have special event permits that are available several times a year to cover things such as parties and grand openings. It’s obvious that the list of salons holding permits is a short one. What can be daunting is deciphering from whom that permit or license must be garnered. In California and Michigan, businesses must get approval from the state and the local municipality. In some states, such as Indiana, servers must also have a server permit. Some municipalities have further restrictions on how far a busi-ness must be from a church, school, or funeral home.

Someone make that spinning stop. If you are a bit confused by the seemingly wide range of licensing restrictions, you are not alone. The state, county, and city all have a say in the matter. It’s a brave new world out there, and as fellow salons pave the way through the process, you can expect to see more Day Spa specifi c types of licenses evolve.

{my other life

How could man take pieces of metal, some black powder, and take lives and take over countries?‘‘ ‘‘

Jenny Constantine, nail technicianIn her other life: police offi cer and armourer

“I never wanted to be in a job that would have me confi ned to an offi ce pushing paper,” says Jenny Constantine, owner of a mobile nail service called Junique Nails, based in Diego Martin, Trinidad. That’s also one of the reasons behind her other career choice: police offi cer. “I have been a police offi cer for eight years,” says Constantine. “I like the action, the energy, working with people — all the excitement.”

In particular, she was drawn to working with fi rearms. “In 2003 after fi ring my fi rst gun I realized I had become somewhat like a God in terms of having the power to take life,” she says. “I wanted to know how fi rearms worked. How could man take pieces of metal, some black powder, and take lives and take over countries? I wanted to know the mechanics of it.” She satisfi ed this curiosity by becoming an armourer — a person who repairs and maintains fi rearms.

“I am a certifi ed Smith and Wesson M & P 9mm armourer capable of repairing countless rifl es, handguns, shotguns, revolvers, etc.,” she says. “On a typical day, I check the requests for repairs of fi rearms and available staff and distribute tasks to the team. Most days we repair different fi rearms and test for serviceability by fi ring them off. We troubleshoot problems and even visit police stations to check their weapons and storage facilities.
