1.2 Curriculum Development
1. Specify the steps undertaken by the institution in curriculum development process. (Need assessment, development of information
database from faculty, students, alumni, employees and academic
experts, and formalizing the decisions in statutory academic bodies).
As an under graduate college, affiliated to Acharya Nagarjuna
University, the college does not have a cognizable role to play in the
development of curriculum. Feedback from students regarding the courses
offered enables us to realise their needs and the same is kept in view by the
members of the Board of Studies while making suggestions to the
university.
2. State specifically the curricular design and model adopted by the college in the organization of its curricula. What system does the
institution follow: Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and Semester
patterns?
The designing of the curriculum is made by Acharya Nagarjuna

in each subject suggests the breakup of syllabus in regard to a given time
frame. We stick to the schedule suggested and each department prepares the
-
Self Study Report Cycle 1
S.V.A.S.College, Giddalur, Prakasam District, A.P. Page 35
annual academic calendar keeping in view the number of feasible hours
each subject is given.
The annual system is followed in the organization of the curriculum.
The University suggests a time frame for the syllabus to be covered. This
schedule is followed as far as possible.
The University provides the Almanac for each academic year and it is
implemented making allowances for local needs.
3. How are the global trends in higher education reflected in the curriculum?
As already mentioned the curriculum for all under graduate courses is
fixed by the University. The Acharya Nagarjuna University introduced
restructured courses like B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Electronics & B.Sc.
Statistics in 1994-95 academic year and B.Com. Computer in 2010-11
respectively and introduced subjects at the degree level that are in tune with
the emerging trends in higher education. English is gaining prominence as a
global language. As such we are making efforts to promote the use of
English in the class rooms. The department of English proposes to conduct
classes in Spoken English and Communication skills to all students.
Subjects like Computer Science, Statistics and B.Com. (Computers)
that would equip the students in meeting the demands in the modern world
are introduced in the college. The core traditional values that have to be
preserved are taught through subjects like Contemporary India,
Environmental Science and Science and Technology Development.
The new syllabus introduced in various degree courses emphasizes
training in computer operation and developing Communication skills. Basic
principles of Computers are taught to all degree students. The Internet
facility is made available in the college and in near future the students will
be provided access to it.
Environmental Education is being introduced in all degree courses,
which teaches the students the need for creating pollution free and eco
friendly society. S.T.D. and office automation tools are introduced so as to
have awareness in the students on latest technology.
4. How does the institution ensure that the curriculum bears some thrust on national development?
We are adapting ourselves to the changing context in the realm of
education. The curriculum designed by the University inculcates the ideas of
the national development through subjects like Indian Heritage and Culture.
-
Self Study Report Cycle 1
S.V.A.S.College, Giddalur, Prakasam District, A.P. Page 36
The concept is further driven home to students through the activities of
N.C.C./N.S.S./Red Ribbon etc. Apart from this lecturers often try to
inculcate upon the students the need for religious tolerance, national
development etc. in their classes.
5. What are the contributions of the institution in curriculum design and development of the various programmes? (Member of BOS/ by sending
agenda items etc.,)
There is a very limited scope for the institution in curriculum design
and development of various programmes as the university is the competent
authority for this activity. However teachers appointed as members of Board
of Studies in various subjects have done their best to incorporate in the
syllabus curricular aspects that would be in conformity with the local needs.
6. What are the interdisciplinary courses introduced during the last five years?
English and a second language are compulsory interdisciplinary
courses. Apart from these Contemporary India and Environmental Science
and Science and Technology Development (S.T.D.) are also
interdisciplinary.
7. What value added courses are introduced which would
(1) Develop skills
To develop the skills of the students that are necessary in
the modern education courses in the B.Sc. with Computers and
Statistics and B.Com. Computers have been added to our
programmes. Practical classes and field trainings are provided for
developing the skills of students at global level.
(2) Offer career training
There are no specific courses that offer career training.
However the career development cell provides the necessary
information regarding career training.
(3) Promote community orientation?
There is no opportunity to introduce courses in community
orientation. This activity forms a part of our extension activities. In
Contemporary India, the compulsory subject in first year ideas like
community orientation, religious tolerance and the like are
incorporated.
-

8. What percentage of the courses focus on experiential learning including practical and work experience?
This differs from course to course. Normally in science courses
practical work has a considerable place. The percentage of practical work
subject wise is as follows.
English - 40%
Maths - 30%
Physics - 35%
Chemistry - 40%
Botany - 35%
Zoology - 35%
Computer science- 35%
9. Is there a provision for incorporating computer training in curriculum for all students?
Computer training is a part of the curriculum for all degree classes.
The department of Computer science offers short term training in Computer
Programming for all degree students and the knowledge of Computer
operation is essential for all the students of first and second year courses.
Students of B.Com have a paper on Computer Science.
10. What are the courses aiming to promote value education/social citizenship roles?
No exclusive courses are offered that aim at promoting value
education. However in subjects like Indian Heritage & Culture students are
taught the need for the values to be inherited by them. They are made to
realize their social responsibilities. Our extension activities inculcate the
core values among the students.
11. What thrust is given to Information Communication Technology in the curriculum for equipping the students for global demands?
The use of I.C.T. is on a low key. All the students are taught the basics
of computer operation. Internet facility is made available in the college. In
the coming days we propose to utilize I.C.T. at an optimum level. Training
will be provided in the use of fax in the days to come.

In our college we identify the slow learners in each class in the first
quarter of the academic year. For this we take into consideration the marks
obtained by the students in the first Bi-monthly test and Quarterly
Examinations. Based on the performance of the students those who are
lagging behind are identified. Normally every year, from the first week of
November remedial teaching and study hours are arranged for such
students.

2. Criteria wise Inputs
Criterion II: Teaching Learning and Evaluation
2.1 Admission Process
1.How are the students selected for admission to the various courses?
The admissions to degree classes are governed by the guidelines
issued by the Acharya Nagarjuna University. The salient features of the
process of admission are
The Principal appoints a committee consisting of five members of teaching staff, one of whom acts as the convener. The
committee is entrusted with scrutiny of applications,
preparation of selection list and waiting list strictly in
accordance with the rules and regulations for admission. The
selection lists and waiting lists are prepared strictly in the order
of merit, course wise, group wise and medium wise giving
preference to students who passed the qualifying examinations
in the first attempt.
The committee submits the lists to the Principal. The Principal ensures that the lists have been prepared according to rules.
Admissions are made on the basis of aggregate marks obtained by
each candidate in all the subjects of the qualifying examinations.
The rules of reservation are strictly followed in making the
admissions. A uniform and foolproof procedure suggested by the University
is followed. Any other instructions communicated either by the University
or the government from time to time are complied with.
2.What strategies are adopted to create access to
a) Disadvantaged community
Students belonging to the disadvantaged community are
provided admission following the rules of reservation. They can also
seek admission in the open competition. The following is the
reservation pattern. For SCs 15%, for STs 6%, for BCs 25%
b) Women
30% of seats available are kept reserved for women.
c) Physically challenged
-

3% of Seats are available to physically disabled candidates.
d) Economically weaker sections of the society
The Management of the College Committee and the staff
members are generous in paying the college fees to the deserving
meritorious students. Economically backward students are provided
scholarships by the Government.
3. What is the ratio of applications received to admissions granted? (Demand ratio)
The overall ratio of applications received during the academic year
2012-13 is 1:1.5 (Average figures for all the courses put together).
2.2 Catering to Diverse Needs
1. Is there a provision for assessing students knowledge/ needs and skills before the commencement of the teaching programme?
Yes. There is a need for assessing the knowledge of the student
before the commencement of the teaching programme. Teachers ascertain
the level of understanding of the student so that they can distinguish
between the slow learners and the advanced students. This is done through
interaction with the students in an informal way so as to ascertain their
aptitudes and skills.
2. Does the institution provide bridge courses to the educationally disadvantaged students?
Yes. Bridge Courses are provided in some faculties to students
coming to degree classes from a different stream at the +2 level. The
department of Zoology conducted bridge course for students who joined
B.Sc. (B.Z.C.) coming from a group with Fisheries at the Intermediate level.
The department of Botany conducted these classes for B.Z.C. students that
come from Fisheries group at +2 level.
The faculty of Commerce held Bridge Course classes for students
who joined B.Com. coming from Science and Arts groups in the
Intermediate. These courses were conducted in the month of July.
3. What remedial measures are taken for the students from the disadvantaged communities?
Students from the disadvantaged communities are encouraged to
pursue Higher Education. In order to help them cope with the academic
requirements remedial teaching is offered to them, generally out of the

regular class hours. Certain confidence building measures are adopted to
boost their morale.
2.3 Teaching Learning Process
1. How does the institution plan and organize the teaching learning evaluation schedule into the total scheme? Do you have an academic
calendar? How is it prepared?
The Teaching Learning evaluation schedule is prepared well in advance during the summer vacation for the ensuing academic year.
Normally the academic calendar prepared by the University reaches us in
February/March. Feasible number of hours to be allotted to each paper are
suggested. The academic calendar is prepared with the help of the Calendar
Committee.
The Calendar committee for the present year consists of
Dr. V. Bali Reddy, Lecturer in Telugu, department of Telugu,
Dr. A.Kanchiyya, Lecturer in History, department of History with Principal
as the Chairman.
The Staff Council plays an important role in the preparation of
annual calendar. They decide the number of optional holidays to be given.
The almanac for the year is prepared taking into consideration the
number of working days, month wise. The breakup of syllabus unit wise is
prepared. For this members of every department meet and prepare the
annual academic plan for the whole year in all the papers taught by the
faculty. Allowance is made for any unforeseen loss of working days or
dislocation of work. While preparing unit wise syllabus the academic plan
suggested by the University is followed as far as possible.
The target syllabus month wise is covered by the individuals.
Statements regarding the coverage of syllabus are obtained from
individuals every two months as a measure of feedback. The information is
recorded in the Performance Indicators.
1. Annual academic plan.
2. Coverage of syllabus month wise.
The in-charges of the departments supervise the coverage of
syllabus.
At the end of the month each teacher reviews the coverage of
syllabus and holds extra classes for the students for whom the targeted
syllabus is not covered.
-

Every lecturer has to maintain a teaching diary in which the
coverage of syllabus and a synopsis of the subject taught is recorded. The
in-charge of the department verifies the diaries at the end of every month
and offers necessary suggestions to the individual lecturers. The teaching
diaries are submitted to the Principal once in a month.
In the class rooms a student centric approach is adopted. Smart
strategies are used to make the process of teaching a pleasant job. We have a
team of well trained and experienced teachers who work with dedication. In
the first few days of the academic year the academically backward students
are identified and special attention is provided to them.
Students of the first year degree courses who come from a different
stream in the +2 stage are provided Bridge courses in some faculties.
Every teacher uses some time to get a feedback from students on the
subject he has taught in the previous classes. Special attention is provided to
students lagging behind in the class.
Evaluation is mainly through the examinations we conduct. Every
year three major home tests i.e. Quarterly, Half-yearly and Hope
examinations are conducted. Beside these two or three Bi-monthly tests are
conducted. Lecturers allot a few periods for Assignments.
The number of working days is normally 220 inclusive of
examination days. We adhere to the working schedule suggested by the
University.
2. What courses use predominantly the lecture method? Apart from classroom interactions, what other methods of teaching-learning are
provided to students?
In almost all courses we use the conventional lecture method with
the Black Board as the major teaching-aid. But often in various faculties,
teachers use additional resources in teaching - learning process. Charts,
models, and Over Head Projectors are used depending on the need. In the
language lab computers and hearing devices (Micro Phones) are used.
Science department use the facility of Epidiascope which is available in the
Botany department. Recently we have added an L.C.D. to our infrastructure
which will be of great use in teaching.
The lecturers guide the students in preparing their seminar topics.
Seminars are conducted inviting resource persons belon
