Special recognition must be made to Jimmy Chang, who brought a vast multitude of grandchildren for our train ride.

Tom McCathy of the Hawaiian Railroad So-ciety provided this special Saturday trip and the fascinating narration during the 90-minute round-trip from Ewa to Kahe Point near Nanakuli. Along the way we went through the rapidly developing Kapolei and Ko Olina com-munities. It was quite a contrast riding on this restored sugar cane-hauling train through these modern developments, such as the just opened Disney resort.

We especially enjoyed Tom’s anecdotes about the black swans at Ko Olina Golf Course caus-

ing disputes with the golfers by emphatically de-fending errant golf balls that they believed were their eggs and the story about how some 16-inch guns salvaged from USS ARIZONA were arduously moved in early 1942 to a bluff by Kahe Point for coastal defense against a feared Japanese invasion that never occurred.

Everyone had an exciting time—especially the youngsters (that’s all of us, right?).

A Job Well Done On Monday, August 1st., ten faithful ladies came together to work on 60 Hawaiian Guard-ian Angels for the veterans at Tripler's Center for Aging. Jane Kekoa brought up the idea of making these angels to give to our veterans on Wednesday, November 16th. The beautiful Hawaiian fabric pieces were donated by Row-ena Okita and many of the supplies (wooden heads, silver and gold pipe cleaners, tacky glue, and miniature roses for the angel's hair) were donated by Gary Furukawa. Gary is the man-ager at the Ben Franklin store in Kailua. Other ladies brought lace edging, yarn, and gold and silver cardboard to put the finishing touches on these special angels. Mahalo to Shirley Ihara who took home 27 angels and finished putting lace around the angels' skirts. Special thanks to Taffy Wells and Alice Fujiwara for providing dessert for our tuna and egg salad sandwich lunch. Sandwich makings and drinks were courtesy of Jane Kekoa and Marion Von.

Our next event will be headed by Linda Fong. Linda will show us how to make beauti-ful angels to be used as ornaments on Christ-mas trees and gift labels for packages. The event will take place on Monday, November 7th. Be prepared with your own scissors and needle for some stitching. Please bring a glue gun and/or tacky glue. The Merrie Ladies have some tacky glue left over from our Hawaiian Angel craft day, so there is no need to buy more bottles. Everything else will be provided. Details for the November event will be in our next newsletter. Marion

Right On! From a retired US Navy Chief: “Military re-tirement is not an entitlement -- it was earned! Our benefits aren't some kind of char-ity or handout!

“On the other hand, Congressional benefits like their special, free health care, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days - now THAT'S welfare.” Mark

Life auxiliary member Harriet Weissman was the hostess for the chapter’s August 21st party bridge session held in the Fahrni Realty Class-room. Play started at 1 pm with 2 guest substi-tutes, but with one short for the scheduled 4 tables of bridge, play was completed with avail-able players sitting in for the missing player.

It was again a relatively high scoring session with a total of 3 Slams being bid and made, one of them being a “Grand Slam”. As expected, the partners who made the “Grand Slam” ended play with the 2 highest scores — Leney Vine with 7,180 and John Kim with 6,630. The remaining top 5 scores were made by Dayle Carlson, Lois Luehring and Marion Von. The 2 small slam-making partners were: Les Ihara & Dayle Carl-son and Lois Luehring with a “dummy.”

Other participants were, in alphabetic order: Bobbi Carlson, Trudi Ernst, Shirley Ihara, Coralie Vellis, Vernon & Marion Von and Harriet Weissman and guests Mary Andre and Midge Brooks.

we had a total of seventeen players, with five wahine golfers and five guest golfers.

We had our usual flag officer leading our group, Kelly Lau, and joining him in the first group were Ken Munechika, and Ira Tagawa; they were followed by Vernon Von, Jack Boh-man, and Cedric Chong; in the third group were Marv Baum, Eddie Lee, and Bill Jones, guest of Marv Baum; they were followed by Ken Yamada, Akiko Noda, Alice Fujiwara, and yours truly; in the fifth group were Joe Ku-roda and his guests, Kumiko Nomura, Tomiko Kurosawa, and Motoyo Kayaka.

After tabulating all the scores and deciding the blind partners, in fourth place were the partners of Kelly Lau and Jack Bohman, in third place were Akiko Noda and Ira Tagawa; in second place losing by one stroke were Ken Yamada and Kumiko Nomura; and in first place with a low net of 154 were Motoyo Kayaka and Bill Jones. Congratulations to all the winners and a big Mahalo to all the contributors.

Now for our thought of the day: “Lead me not into temptation – I can find it by myself.”

Our next golf outing will be on Friday, Sep-tember 23, 2011, at the Navy Marine Golf Course. Sign-up notice is forthcoming.

Aloha,

August Golf Report

Once again, we had a slow sign-up, similar to last month with more nays than ayes. However, once Joe Kuroda signed up three of his Japanese wahine guests, things sort of picked up. The weather also cooperated, not the

usual damp weather with gusty winds, but lightly cloudy skies just enough to keep the sun from being scorching and a mild breeze rather than the usually blistery winds of Kaneohe. We had eighteen ayes until we arrived at Klip-per Golf Course, Kaneohe Marine Corps Base, Hawaii, Monday morning, August 15th, and were informed that we had a cancellation, thus

Revised January 2007. All prior forms obsolete.

Board Appoints New

Chapter President for 2012 At its meeting on 2 August 2011, at the Honolulu Country Club Grille Room, the Aloha Chapter board of directors accepted Bob Kozuki’s res-ignation as president effective 31 De-cember 2011. The board then ap-pointed chapter member Curtis Lee as president effective 1 January 2012. As new president, Curt will appoint a vice-president, secretary and treasurer, as well as other chairs of the standing committees, all of whose terms will also begin on 1 January 2012.

The board reconfirmed Larry Eno-moto as Vice Chair to insure a proper transition in case the Chair is unable to perform his duties for any reason.

The board considered an issue raised by a member regarding certain provisions in Aloha Chapter bylaws allegedly adopted on 16 August 2009 as published in the March 2010 Aloha Chapter Membership Directory. The board determined, upon closer examination of what happened, that the version published was incor-rect with respect to directors’ terms of office [See Errata Note in August 2011 chapter newsletter]. The board directed that a CORRECTED COPY of the bylaws be published in the August 2011 Aloha Chapter Membership Directory. Consequently, the board concluded that the unspecified terms of office of all current directors would expire not later than 31 December 2011. A nominating committee chaired by Curt Lee, who was appointed earlier, will present a slate of candidates for election at the general membership meet-ing in November 2011 to fill seven directors’ pending vacancies. Nominees may include current direc-tors who want to be re-elected and all others who are willing to serve. Larry Enomoto
