I would venture to say, a season we are meant to live daily. Gratitude changes our perspective on things. I have experienced the power of thanksgiving in my own life and witnessed it in others. I met with someone in my office this week for pastoral counseling. She has had a very challenging life. Her husband died when their son was ten months old and she raised him alone as a single parent ending each day with focusing on what she was grateful for. She is now a grand-mother for her son’s two kids. But she believes and knows with all her heart that focusing her prayers with thanksgiving “lifted her up”, were supportive strength, and became the way of transformation in her life through many hills and deep valleys. Focusing on what she could be grateful for and not on what she didn’t have was a positive energy that gave her a vision with hope.I am trying to practice something that has already begun to make a difference for me. A friend passed it on to me. It is a question I now ask myself: What energy do I initiate, amplify or dampen? In other words I can initiate and amplify the positive or dampen the negative energy that erupts in me. What is most effective is to look for the positive. I know we all have heard things like this before but as Thanksgiving Day approaches, I need to be reminded of the power of an attitude of gratitude.Giving thanks honors God because it implies a deep trust in God’s presence doing more then we could ask for or even imagine. The bible invites consistent gratitude among God’s people.

I pray that the spirit of thanksgiving be a daily grace that leads you forward through the power of God’s amazing presence, With love and care for each of you,

Mo. Paula+

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

I believe that Thanksgiving Day is not just a day, but a season.

with an old fashioned pot luck and showing of the film. Love Free or Die is about a man whose two defining passions are in direct conflict: his love for God and for his partner Mark. Gene Robinson is the first openly gay person to become a bishop in the historic traditions of Christendom. His consecration in 2003, to which he wore a bullet-proof vest, caused an international stir. The film follows Robinson from small-town churches in the New Hampshire North Country to Washington’s Lin-coln Memorial to London’s Lambeth Palace, as he calls for all to stand for equality – inspiring bishops, priests and ordinary folk to come out from the shadows and change history.

Who are these people who either just hand the ushers the offering plates and close gates at 8am, or forgot to wear

their cotta at the 10am? They are the Vergers of St. Francis Episcopal Church. We have several Vergers at St. Francis, but before I introduce you to them, and the history of St. Francis Vergers, a his-tory lesson of Vergers. A verger (or virger, so called after the staff of the office, Latin virga = twig, rod) is a person, usually a layperson, who assists in the ordering of religious services, particu-larly in Anglican or Episcopalian churches.

The Office of the Verger has its roots in the early days of the Church of England's history. The Order shares certain similarities with the former Minor Orders of Porter and Acolyte. Historically Vergers were responsible for the order and upkeep of the house of worship, including the care of the church buildings, its furnishings, and sacred relics, preparations for liturgy, conduct of the laity, and grave-digging responsibilities.

Although there is no definitive historical examination of the Office of Verger, evidence from Rochester, Lincoln, Exeter and Salisbury Cathedrals points to the existence of Vergers even in the twelfth century. Koster is the Dutch word for sexton or verger, derived from the Latin custos (the equivalent German word is "Küster").The symbol of a Guild of Cathedral vergers is the Crossed keys. Perhaps the best-known portrait of an An-glican verger in fiction is in Somerset Maugham's short story, "The Verger."During the service itself, a verger's main duty is ceremo-nially to precede the religious participants as they move about the church; he or she does not typically take any speaking part in the service itself. It could be argued that a verger's main pride during a service lies in his or her inconspicuousness; vergers often play a very prominent role "behind the scenes" — helping to plan the logisti-cal details of service and discreetly shepherding the clergy through it. (In some churches these latter duties are handled by a Master of Ceremonies, while the verger functions as a sort of marshal in the procession.)The office's title comes from the ceremonial rod which a verger carries, a virge (see above). The Maces of State used in the House of Lords and the House of Commons of the British Parliament are examples of another mod-ern use of the medieval virge. In former times, a verger

might have needed to use his virge to keep back animals or an overenthusiastic crowd from the personage he was escorting or even to discipline unruly choristers. The typical vestments of a verger are a black cassock with Fascia (sash worn above the waist), purple or violet chimere (long, sleeveless gown - actually descend-ed from a riding cloak), and a jabot (lace neckband). Today many modern vergers wear a scapular instead of a chimere. In small churches today, the office of verger is often combined with that of sexton: the verger assisting at services, and the sexton maintaining the church building the rest of the time are one and the same person.

The office of Verger has, for the most part, disappeared in the Roman Catholic tradition, the closest function being that of the sexton or the head or senior usher, particularly in those churches (usually large establishments, like St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City or the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Wash-ington, DC) that have an organized and formal corps of ushers. Some parishes do not have a Verger; others have several that serve one at a time, and oth-ers, notably National Cathedral in Washing-ton, DC has upwards of 10 in the service. Most Vergers in the US are volunteers, with very few American Cathedrals having paid Vergers such as Washington National Cathedral. In the UK, it is possible to have a paying job as a Verger not only in parishes but also cathe-drals; some a stipend, others enough to live on.

November 2013

Sunday SChool newSIt's hard to believe October is past. It seems like school just started and already Target is selling Christmas lights! We have now had 2 months with Godly Play in the upper level classroom, and everyone, children and teachers alike, seem to truly enjoy the stories, work time and of course, feasts. During September, the children heard the story of The Holy Family, Creation and The Circle of the Church Year. After the stories are told, the children have the option to work with the materials used to tell the story or work with the various art materials available in the classroom. We look forward to stocking our classroom with more Godly Play materials, giving the children a wide variety of ways to deepen their learning and express their spirituality. During October we covered The Great Family and The Exodus. The other two Sundays were work days; no new stories will be told, thus giving the children extra time to work with the classroom materials. In the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium, the children have been busy working with the practical life materials and learning how to care for their atrium. They also heard the story of the Good Shepherd, a favorite of both the lead Catechist, Colette Furbush, and the children. We look very forward to sharing a wonderful year with your children.Sincerely,Lauren Sherry

the good Shepherd atriuMThe Good Shepherd Atrium has welcomed several new children this year, and is glad to greet our returning friends. We have been working on our practical life skills and learning about the elements of our prayer table. We have the privilege of having such a beautiful place to gather with our friends to learn about love, prayer, and a way to connect with God. It is always amazing to watch young ones begin a re-lationship with God and faith. It is our hope they will carry this gift for a lifetime. We will be talking about the Communion and the Altar and learning some new songs this month. We will also be talking about Thanksgiving and our many blessings.

Thank you for sharing your children with us! They en-rich our lives with each smile.--Liz Graamp, Adelaide Deley and Colette Furbush,

SoMeone So wonderFulIn the Godly Play classroom, we invite the children to wonder together about the lesson. But before we present the lesson, we light our Christ Candle on our focal table while we say, “There once was someone so wonderful…the people around him had to ask, ‘Who are you?’ He responded, ‘I am the Light.’”

Wonderful…

full of wonder…

I wonder…The children’s wondering emerges out of their own lives, their relationships with God, and their participation in the lesson. Letting God be there. We allow for this power-ful language to do its work. We trust the searching of the children to find what they need with God and the scrip-tures. Sometimes we hear many responses; sometimes we hear none. According to Jerome Berryman, founder of Godly Play, silence is also a profound part of the Christian language system so it is appropriate to experience it in our Godly Play classroom and be comfortable with it.Our November will be full of wondering about the elusive presence of God to his People through four sacred stories found in the books of Exodus, Kings, Chronicles, and a few of the prophets. With the lesson on ‘The Ten Best Ways’, we will tell how God was present with Moses three times in order for Moses to receive the Ten Commandments—which are not easy to follow, perhaps even impossible, but we will try anyway. We will then tell how the People of God kept God close with the tradition of ‘The Ark and the Tent’. With the lesson of ‘The Exile and Return’, we will tell how the People discovered that God was not just in one place, in Jerusalem, but here, there, and everywhere to be found by us. And, finally, before we begin Advent, we will tell about some of the prophets whose job it was to speak “with God’s voice’ to those who have turned away from God.Your children are a joy to wonder with each and every Sunday.

Students in Middle School (CRASH!) and High School (eMERGE!)—connecting with the teen Body of Christ can be a very important anchor in lives that sometimes seem crazy. We invite you to come have fun, learn, hang out, and serve with other teens here at St Francis. Fellowship, Bible study, fun, and service projects need to be at the center of our time together. We are also going to explore ways to be more involved in worship, whether by being readers, offering scripture through drama, singing, ushering, serving as Oblation bearers and Chalice bearers—wherever the Spirit is call-ing us! We also dream of inviting teens from the community to come join us in putting together a musical. All kinds of teens can contribute to a musical even if you don’t sing! MaMa hill’S help, inC.New MinistryAn exciting new ministry is beginning at Mama Hill’s Help! Our own Darryl Tillman is sharing his speed-reading skills with a select number of Mama Hill’s Cookies, those who can benefit from improved comprehension and retention of in-formation. Darryl, a former Evelyn Wood Dynamics graduate and instructor, plans to take these Cookies on a journey of exploration of their untapped and full potential. Stay tuned for impressive progress reports on these Cookies in the coming months. Thank you, Darryl! If you have other ideas or talents you would like to share, please get in touch with our Shepherd for Outreach, Jayne Bray (424-477-4349 or [email protected]). Urgent - School Supplies & Cash for Bus PassesSpeaking of needs, while the Mama Hill’s Help, Inc. program continu-ally needs canned and boxed foods, a critical current need is for school supplies. Especially needed are the composition books (black and white covers that we all remember from our own school days), disposable me-chanical pencils, lined three-ring binder paper, and pens. Also needed is cash for bus passes - $27 per month buys a single student a bus pass which enables them to get to and from school and to and from Mama Hill’s without having to walk through gang-con-trolled neighborhoods. Make your checks payable to St. Francis with Mama Hill’s Help - Angel Fund in the memo line if you would like to help ensure the safety of these precious children. As always, thank you so much for all you do for the children of Mama Hill’s Help, Inc.

Listed below are items which are always appreciated: Please place your donations in the bins in the Parish Hall.• non-perishables – peanut butter, jelly, tuna fish, spaghetti and sauce, Cup o’Noodles, rice, Capri Sun, canned vegetables & fruits, chips, granola bars, cereal, plastic spoons.• personal hygiene items - toothbrushes, toothpastes, deodorants, soaps, body washes, combs, hair brushes, sanitary napkins, nail polish & remover, Qtips, toilet paper, paper towels – no diapers are currently needed.• school supplies – lined paper, composition books, disposable pens & pencils.• clothes & shoes: children’s gently used clothes and shoes are always welcomed.• cash for bus passes (to help the children get around safely in their gang-infested neighborhoods) - $27 per child per month; make checks payable to Mama Hill’s Help Angel Fund and drop off at the church office.• have a party and lots of leftovers? dJiBouti orphanage"the end oF the Story".....In May/ June of 2013, St. Francis announced the collection of used Soccer equipment for an Orphanage in Djibouti, Africa. Jonathan Zimmerman was stationed there, and heard, from the Navy Chaplain, the need for used Soc-cer uniforms and equipment for the children in a nearby Orphanage. “They have nothing”, he said.Don't send boxes to me, please collect these items for the children. Your response was overwhelming. Thank you to all who donated soccer gear, packing time, and money to send the boxes to the Djibouti Orphanage. Jonathan saw a great need for these children, and because of your efforts, we were able to send 51 boxes!!! of used soccer jerseys, shoes and socks, shin guards, soccer balls, pumps to re inflate the balls, & soccer ball sacks. Clothing was sent, as well along with stickers and fun items for the boys and girls. The pick up that was organized by many people in the community was heart warming, especially from Mary Poprac at St. Lawrence Martyr school, Carole Dowling at Chadwick school and Alex and Jennifer Sams from Vista Grande.

Individual drop-offs were amazing, and deserve special thanks. These were friends of friends who wanted to help. Thank you all! We are so grateful, as well, to the adults who paid for the postage; and especially, for the adults and children that packed the boxes during breaks from their busy Summer activities. Jonathan, Susie, Julie and the kids from Djibouti, thank you from the bottom of their hearts! Susie & Jonathan Zimmerman, and Julie McGovern.

Greetings from UCLA!!!Happy October!

It is such a great pleasure to be writ-ing you all once again. I hope ev-eryone had a great summer and for all of our students I hope you had a great start to your school year. This summer was truly an unforget-table one. Working with thousands

of students, parents and even children has been amazing! Now that I am beginning my sophomore year, so many different dreams have become a reality! I began my posi-tion as the “Courtside President” where I lead a group of seven Hill Government Representatives as leaders of my entire dorm building. Part of my position required me to run the entire move-in process for my court of residen-tial buildings. Over 1,000 residents were moved in. We screamed, cheered and even helped move carts and assist with unloading. My biggest task was leading a group of 90 Move-In Assistants throughout the entire week. Al-though, it was a long and stressful process I loved every second of it. Besides being president of my building I am also an undergraduate teaching assistant. I will lead a discussion group of 12 students throughout the quarter-long course “Education 92F: Undergraduate Academic Success”, in

Richard and co-workers posing with his group of kid’s during “Children’s Orien-tation”. The children are those siblings of Newly Admitted Bruins – the kids attend their own Orientation during Family Orientation.

which students from all over campus come together to learn about being successful as an undergrad. Even though it seems like I am getting really involved, I am more excited about being a student! Returning to UCLA and getting in the swing of things once again is great. I am learning a new language this quarter and am taking a course taught by a real Disney Imagineer. UCLA has brought so much joy to both my family and me. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else on the planet and I value the fact that I get to call myself a Bruin. I love UCLA and I love you all too! Thank you so much for being the angels that you have all been. Without any of you I do not know if I would be where I am today. God Bless you and your family. Go Bruins! With Love and Bless-ings,

All women in the Episcopal Church throughout the United States are automatically member, and as in any Episcopal church, all women of the parish are automati-cally a member. In addition, many of us are members of one or more of the Guilds, which are smaller groups who meet for social fellowship and also to support various outreach or chari-table causes. Visit our website for more about the ECW.We will be discussing our annual disbursement of funds during our October meeting. A portion of our fundrais-ing (approx. $5000) goes to church projects and another portion (another approx. $5000) to outreach external to our church. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Tina van der Velden or Susie Zimmerman via the church office on 310 375-4617.

Thank you again to all for your help!

antiQue Show SuCCeSS!Thanks to the very generous contributions of the St Francis congregation of your time and energy as well as contributions of food and goodies, the Antique Show was a wonderful success! Under the able leader-ship of Albertine Bel-lows and Anna Eakins, we enjoyed a beauti-ful show, great food, good fellowship and a chance to broaden our relationship with the community in which we live.

Your ECW received a total of $25,000.00 from the proceeds of the Antique Show.

We then wrote checks to the Church totaling $14,000, fulfilling our 2013 pledge.

In October the ECW held meetings to discuss how to distribute the balance of the money from the Antique Fair as well as Guild Dues and Bridge income. After holding $2,000 in reserve for next year's ECW expenses, the total available to spend was $10,600. The break-down of how we voted to spend that money will appear in the next Bellringer. In addition,we have sent $500 to ECW Fair Share, $100 to The Bishop's Guild, given monies for new coffee pots, put on two Quiet days, and funded the child care dur-ing services for the year. Our Monday Duplicate Bridge will net us just short of $1,000 for the year, and that has helped with our expenses. Again, we in the ECW would like to express our thanks for your help in making our Antique Show a success!!!!
