April 2018 St. Francis Episcopal Church Palos Verdes Estates, California From Mo. Paula The Very Rev. Paula Vukmanic, paula.vukmanic@ stfrancispalosverdes.org 310 375 4617 ext 223 I have a small Fuji apple tree in my back yard that got mixed up from the weather these past few months. The tree didn’t know whether to finish off ripening the apples that were stragglers from last season or start fresh with new growth and new buds. Update: The new growth is on its way and the three apples that hung on are redder than ever! The poor apple tree was thrown off by the weather. I can get thrown off too from unexpected events, from unexpected reactions to things I say or do, from unexpected illness, from unexpected interrup- tions… interrupting carefully planned parts of my day or week or life. I can still get thrown off by what happened to Jesus. That he died for us and rose again is more than I can humanly understand. I know I have to let go of the stragglers in my faith that inhibit new growth for graced know- ing. I want to embrace new buds of faith, hope and love, the reality and experience of the life, light and love of Jesus in me… in you!... I can get thrown off realizing that I am part of the resurrection event of Jesus. The risen Jesus, the Spirit of Jesus lives through me and desires to bear much fruit, more than the stragglers on a Fuji tree from last season. This is a new sea- son. Easter! Are you ready to embrace it? Are you ready to grow from the bud that you are to a new ripeness in your faith and beyond? Are you ready? We are in the Easter sea- son, the time after the resurrection event, nature’s Spring and you have much growth ahead of you. Because of the resurrection event of Jesus, you have a new life too. Death was not the end for Jesus. His greatest triumph was rising beyond death and ascending into a new eternal relationship with all of us, yesterday, today and forever. And it is personal. Your life maers and has always been carefully loved by God so you can slowly ripen and become all that you were created to be. There is not a perfect Fuji apple and apples are not meant to “live” forever but you are. It appears that the stray Fuji apples on my tree from last spring will soon say, “Enough! Let me go on.” But even when death comes to you and me, we do in fact go on into an eternal embrace of the eternal love that shall be an eternal experience. In God’s infinite design we do not die. Life is changed, not ended. It is fullness, more than the fullness of a perfectly ripe apple. While we are still planted on this earth may you bloom and blossom and radiate the new life of the risen Jesus in you. It is hard to explain the power and presence of God that we have received but God indeed in Jesus wants to ripen within us so we can indeed bear fruit that will last. May the blessings, grace and power of the risen Jesus fill you, transform you and lead you with new growth and new buds of faith, hope and love, Paula+ This is Easter Season... ...you have much growth ahead...

I have a small Fuji apple tree in my back yard that got mixed up from the weather these past

few months. The tree didn’t know whether to finish off ripening the apples that were stragglers from last season or start fresh with new growth and new buds. Update: The new growth is on its way and the three apples that hung on are redder than ever!The poor apple tree was thrown off by the weather. Are you ready to embrace it? Are you ready to grow from the bud that you are to a new ripeness in your faith and beyond?

Are you ready? We are in the Easter sea-son, the time after the resurrection event, nature’s Spring and you have much growth ahead of you.Because of the resurrection event of Jesus, you have a new life too. Death was not the end for Jesus. His greatest triumph was rising beyond death and ascending into a new eternal relationship with all of us, yesterday, today and forever. And it is personal. Your life matters and has always been carefully loved by God so you can slowly ripen and become all that you were created to be.

There is not a perfect Fuji apple and apples are not meant to “live” forever but you are. It appears that the stray Fuji apples on my tree from last spring will soon say, “Enough! 40 Days of Lent Madness,Three Sacred Days of Holy Week,One Holiest Day of All,Now what?

Guess what? We’ve only just begun. Easter Day marks the first of the 50 days of Easter. The Easter Season, which Paula+ writes so beautifully in her message for April.The great 50 days runs from Easter Day until Pentecost (from the ancient Greek πεντηκοστή (pentēkostē, “fiftieth”). The Lectionary readings dur-ing the Sundays of Easter explore the post-resurrec-tion appearances of Christ, and also the promise of a future resurrection.To help you get the most out of these days, why not bookmark ‘50 Days of Fabulous’ (50days.org) on your computer?As part of the Good Book Club they will be sharing a reflection about the upcoming weekly readings of the Acts of the Apostles, then later during the week, a video link for prayer, reflection, or discussion.PS - what to know which Saint wafted aloft with the Golden Halo of Lent Madness this year? these wonderful young people! As a fellowship we are responsible for them and I thank you, and believe, that God is guiding us in a good way. Stay with it...it is SO well worth it and is our responsibility. Take time to get to know a child in our parish and make intentions to speak with them, engage them, and pray for them. This is a spiritual time of renewal and growth of our hearts, faith, and Christianity... so pour yourself into the full circle of our faith and into our wonderful children.

Bishop John H, Taylor will celebrate Eucharist and administer the sacrament of Confirmation here at St Francis.

AdultsIf you are an adult who would like to be confirmed, please contact Paula+.If you are a baptized adult but have not been confirmed you are invited to consider this sacramental rite in the Epis-copal Church. Confirmation is a public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism in the presence of a bishop in which you receive the laying on of hands.Paula+ would like to meet with any adults who would like to receive this sacrament for two sessions of preparation. Dates TBA dependent on what is convenient for the adults.Adults who have been confirmed in another denomination

If you received the sacrament of confirmation in the Roman Catholic Church or another mainline Church, such as Lutheran, you can be “received” into the Episcopal Church by the bishop. Paula+ would like to include those who want to be “received” into our church in a two session preparation program. Dates TBA dependent on what is con-venient for the adults. Also, you may participate in the “reaffirmation of baptismal vows”

TeensConfirmation is a choice! Confirmation is a “public affirmation and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism” and it is a renewal in a commitment to Jesus Christ. The teen Confirmation program at St Francis is simple; it is an exploration of the Baptismal Covenant as it relates to the challenges we face being a Christian in the world today. The teen program is rooted in understanding the impact of a Christian set of values. The tools of the program are group discussions, reflection material, prayer, scripture, the Book of Common Prayer, and presentations …all in an engaging, enjoyable process! Please contact Paula+ or Jeannie Cobb, our youth director,

Please contact Paula+, [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to register for any of the above.

Date for Confirmation Here at St Francis Sunday, March 3, 2019, 10am

It's official. Congratulations to 2018 Golden Halo winner Anna Alexander! And thanks to every-one who participated in Lent Madness this year. It's been another wild ride, full of saintly learn-ing and inspiration. Anna Ellison Butler Alexander (circa 1865 – Sep-tember 24, 1947) was the first and only African-American consecrated a Deaconess in the Episcopal Church.[1] She served in the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia during her entire career, and may be remembered in the Calendar of saints on September 24

Donations - see the blue donation bin in the lower Parking lot

Please...• St Luke’s (see below) - always needs mens and womens underwear. Any type - cheap

is fine. Just the more we can give the better. Online packs can be bought cheaply eg. http://www.theadairgroup.com/underwear/assorted-colors-adult-boxer-briefs-p-304.html offers packs of a dozen for $9.16 each.

• No dirty or stained items; clean, unstained, and whole (not needing mending) items are best;

• Check expiration dates on canned and boxed foods; we don't want to run the risk of making anyone ill;

• Think about the weight of your donations; one large, heavy bag should be converted to two smaller (or less full) bags so that we can transport it not only to our cars, but to the donee's location; in gentlest terms, we are a small (but mighty), mostly older group doing the lugging!

• Please contact Outreach Shepherd Gayle Taylor - [email protected] - if you have large or bulky items. Last, but certainly not least, accept the heartfelt gratitude of the folks at St. Luke's, at Harbor Interfaith, and all others, who receive your generosity. Thank you!

Outreach at St. FrancisDesigns for Dining 2018 Annual Fundraiser for the St Francis Scholarship Outreach FundResults are in - $13,500!!!

“Love God, Love Others, Serve the World”

And for those who have never heard the story...A Short History of the St. Francis Outreach Scholarship Fund (SFOSF)

Our fund was started by one parishioner, Mrs. Joni Mc-Intyre, in 1998 with the dream of helping one student of limited means attain a college education. Our fund has been active and continuing to find new applicants and help students for all the past twenty years.With the dream of helping one student, we have proceed-ed to help over twenty students and we currently have three new applicants to interview this spring.

How Do We Find Our Students?We have found our students via recommendations from local school counselors, most recently, Mrs. Edna Martinez, who is currently at Narbonne High School in Lomita. Prior to Mrs. Martinez, a counselor at the Hawthorne Math and Science Magnet assisted us with the recommendation of several students.One year we sent out letters to a number of local high schools. At that time, we only got one response from a counselor from the California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS), and a counselor at Banning High School in Wilmington, posted our letter on their bul-letin board. As a result of this, one student - Richard Tucker, contacted us, and since Richard, we forged a relationship with the aforementioned Mrs. Edna Martinez, who was then at Banning. Mrs. Martinez

only recommends the students who in her mind fit our program.One of our new applicants found our information on the website of West High School in Torrance. She is a foster child. Plus, we have two new recommendations from Mrs. Martinez that we plan to interview in Spring 2018.

How Do We Choose? Hint - It’s Not Just About the Money.

Our focus on students in recent years has moved to-wards those who have additional problems, over and above being in need financially. We have had several students who are orphans, along with other family situations or health problems which make them even more in need of our services.

Targeted Assistance Makes Us UniqueOur scholarship fund is unique in that we assist stu-dents according to their specific needs. For example, a student may need a laptop (as essential for college classes today). Another student may need internet ac-cess in their home (again very necessary these days for completing homework assignments). Another student, who commutes from Torrance to Long Beach State on the city bus, was in need of a cell phone for her safety.

And How Do We Follow Up and Assess?About 5 years ago, we selected a number of students and gave them each $1,000. We didn’t make any prom-ises to them as far as supporting them through their college careers. Instead, we waited to see what type of relationship we developed with them. We expected them to forward their grades to us and let us know what other needs they had. About 9 of these students didn’t follow up with us. Two of them, Richard Tucker and Elishebah Tate-Pulliam did continually keep in touch with us and we followed both of them through four years until their graduation, Richard from UCLA, and Elishebah from Cal State Long Beach.We do not assist with graduate school expenses. Our goal is to give them their start with having a college degree. Many of them have gone on to pursue gradu-ate degrees, or have already obtained higher degrees.

The Personal Stories...One of our early recipients, Chris Califano, is obtain-ing his master’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting. A recent message from Richard Tucker, who is now in Brooklyn, New York with the Teach for America pro-gram just wrote, “My work is great and I absolutely love my awesome group of students. I received a promotion in October to Program Director for Upper Academy Scholar Leadership and coordi-nate all of the school cultural initiatives and also teach and supervise the student leadership group. Also, I’m respon-sible for Yearbook and supervising the teacher that works with me. I’m teaching 7th and 8th grade English.”We are very proud of Richard, he just started teach-ing there in July and already has a promotion. We keep in touch with our students post graduation and as available they come back to speak at our annual fundraiser, “Designs for Dining”.

Updates and ThanksWe just completed our 17th annual fundraiser and we also have an annual Breast Cancer Awareness Soap Sale that benefits SFOSF and the local Cancer Support Community in Redondo Beach.Our parishioners at St. Francis, support our charity by being volunteers at our annual event, and attending the event, bringing friends, purchasing silent auction items etc. We are all volunteers.Also, we had a Dinner at Hof’s Hut a couple of years ago. One of our students, Jackeline Hernandez, has been working there for six years. The restaurant donated a portion of each person’s dinner bill to our fund. We had over 80 parishioners attend!Cheryl GutierrezCo-Chair, St. Francis Outreach Scholarship Fund`

Two years ago my husband, Richard, and I visited St. Francis Episcopal Church at the invitation of Susie

and Albert Zimmerman. Out the gate we could sense this is a warm and welcoming fellowship!The Hollywood Riviera has been our home for the past 32 years of our married lives and where we raised our three (now grown) children. Richard’s two wonderful sons came to live with us at the ages of 13 and 14 and we enjoyed watching them learn to surf and play music with Richard. Our oldest, Warren, works in sound engineering at NBC Universal and Matthew, grew up (like 6’7” tall!) to become an executive chef. We love when Matt cooks for us! Our daughter, Savannah, whom we adopted as a new-born, has become a lovely young woman. She is back home now but she spent two years on the east coast while she attended both Wheaton College and Berklee College of Music. We can’t take credit for her singing voice or her dimples….they came with the package!My widowed mother, Lois, who is nearly 93 years old lives with us. She has been valiantly fighting cancer for the past three years, so it is a joy to hear her open her bed-room door each morning as she heads to the kitchen for her first cup of coffee. She keeps us all on our toes!

Meet The Women of the Parish - Donna PaineI feel so blessed to have been raised in a Christian home. I was baptized at the age of 16, taught Sunday School for many years, and spent twelve years working in full time ministry both in San Diego and Hous-ton, Texas. While worshipping for 20 years at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church in Redondo Beach, Richard and I led groups in the Christian Family Ministry (for two years) and for multiple years I taught Bible study in my home to grade school girls from St. Lawrence and their friends.Professionally I worked in the healthcare community. Spending an entire career specifically in management and sales, I served as a vice president for three nation-ally based companies. In 1999 I became the owner and president of Trackstar Release of Information Services and was fortunate to work with colleagues I have known and respected for many years. In 2015 we sold Trackstar to our largest competitor….which felt weird!....and for whom I consulted. Now I am retired. Educated at the University of Phoenix, I hold a BSBA.As I go forward in life I look forward to travelling more with Richard, loving and hugging on my kids and four granddaughters and volunteering at St. Francis!
