Originally the Brunswick Regional Youth Orchestra, this organization was founded in 1972 with the help of the late Professor Robert Beckwith of Bowdoin College and an initial grant from the Maine State Commission for the Arts and Humanities. e Orchestra was Incorporated in 1974. MYO students are encouraged to participate in their school music programs. is is a wonderful way in which students can contribute to their school community, and to repay the start in music they may have received there. Acceptance into the group is by audition. MYO gives equal opportunity to all auditioners. Senior Concertos e Maine Youth Orchestra is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the state and is the only organi- zation which offers each senior a chance at playing a concerto. is educational challenge in a nurturing environment is unique to this orchestra. MYO is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization which raises nearly 50% of its yearly budget through mem- ber dues. MYO is run by a volunteer board of directors. All contributions go directly to pay for music, scholar- ships to the members, concert hall rentals and the conductor’s fees. We welcome any contributions and appreciate your support. MYO practices weekly on Tuesdays at Greely Middle School, 357 Tuttle Road, Cum- berland from 6:15 to 8:15 PM. Our season runs from September through May, with two formal concerts a year. MYO endeavors to collaborate with groups like the Greely High School Madrigals, Curva via Orchestra of Paris, the Island Beats and the Augusta Symphony Orchestra. Interested students may also perform at outreach concerts at schools, museums and government offices throughout the area, as well as in small ensembles. All Orchestral instruments are welcome and encour- aged to attend a rehearsal at the start of the school year.   • Ben David RichmondThe Maine Youth Orches-tra welcomes our new con-ductor. This diverse and talented composer, audio engineer and conductor will begin conducting this year with MYO.

    Ben David Richmond is a conductor, composer, and audio engineer currently serving as Associate Conduc-tor of the Southern Maine Symphony, Conductor with the USM Composers Ensemble, and Rehearsal Con-ductor of the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. For the 2018-19 season, he will also be serving as Interim Conductor with the North Shore Philharmonic and the Maine Youth Orchestra.

    As a composer, Richmond has written three sympho-nies, three ballets, two string quartets, and a list of other works ranging from unaccompanied solo to full ensemble.

    As an audio engineer, Richmond has worked with Eighth Blackbird, InVoice Chicago Recording Studio, the University of Chicago, North Park University, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, Navy Pier's Crystal Garden Ballroom, Victory Gardens Theater, and many others.

    Ray Libby Winds and Brass CoachMYO's winds and brass coach,Ray Libby, graduated from theUniversity of Maine at Orono With degrees in Music Educa-tion and English. A retired instrumental music director at Brunswick High School, he has played multiple wind instruments with a variety of bands. He also per-forms in pit orchestras throughout Maine including: The Best of Broadway at Merrill Auditorium, The Portland Players, The Freeport Players, The Ogun-quit Playhouse and the Maine State Music Theater.

    Jeanie Wester Strings CoachMs Wester is a graduate ofWittenberg University and has a MS from University of Maine. She switched profes-sions from Envorinmental Science and now teaches violin and viola privately. Ms Wester has been a member

    of the Bangor Symphony, Maine Chamber Ensem-ble, Maine Promusica and the Maine State Ballet Or-chestra. She has been with MYO for many years, as a board member, orchestra manager, strings coach, and librarian.

    2015

    Jennifer Turmel, Assistant Strings CoachMs Turmel has an M.S. in Chemistry from the Uni-versity of Oregon. She cur-rently teaches chemistry at SMCC and is active in the homeschooling com-munity, teaching violin and viola and tutoring chemistry.

    She has played violin with the Augusta Symphony Orchestra and the Cathedral musicians and volun-teered with the Maine Youth Orchestra for two years before becoming an assistant strings coach. When she isn't teaching math, science, or music Jennifer enjoys knitting and spending time with her family.

    MYO has been proud to support many students who have gone on to attend music schools such as Julliard, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman School of Music and Oberlin Conservatory. Many of our alumni are professional musicians and teachers or amateur musicians with community orchestras. We are equally proud of our students who pursue careers in technology, environmental science, education and medicine etc.
