Continuos reliability and readiness of anchor chain and anchor windlass/winches in vessel operation can be practically guided by:

• Chain strenght • Anchoring Performance • Windlass/Winch Brake Band

Chain Strength

The strength of anchor chain can be interpreted by measuring individual chain links as below:

Anchoring Performance

Lowering Test An anchoring test is to be carried out to demonstrate that the windlass brakes etc. functions satisfactorily by applying brake during lowering. Hoisting Test The mean speed on the chain cable when hoisting the anchor and cable is not to be less than 9 m/min. and is to be measured over two shots (55 m) of chain cable. Test should be commenced with 3 shots (82.5 m) of chain cable fully submerged. Where the depth of water is inadequate, consideration will be given to acceptance of equivalent simulated conditions.

Winch Brake Band Test Each winch brake shall be tested to prove that they render at a load that is equivalent to 60% of the line’s MBL:

dm ≥ ≥ ≥ ≥ 0.88 x do (i.e. should not be reduced by 12%)

dm = mean measured diameter.=( d1+ d2)/2

do = original diameter corresponding to vessel’s design equipment letter. 1. Chain cable length is to be renewed if one or more links measured below acceptable

minimum. 2. Certificate shall be presented and checked against stamping. 3. Link diameter of new chain is recommended equal to or above 95% of the value

corresponding to the equipment letter 4. If a higher/lower grade is used, the diameter may be reduced/ is required increased

correspondingly. However,\it must be verified that the chain links fit in the cable lifter without slipping

• If slippage occurs at pressure less than designed, the brake should be tightened and repaired and jack pressure re-applied’

• If the recorded pressure is correspond to the design pressure, the jack should be released and the test gear removed

• If slippage does not occur at the design pressure, the brake setting should be adjusted so the brake can be render at the design load
