My Vocational Journey

• To refl ect on the vocational learning of others and their own vocational journey• To identify three occupations that might suit a student’s skills, interest and talents


You may wish to pre-teach these words before the lesson or refer to them during the lesson. The

checklist is not exhaustive and a list displaying these words and their meanings should be available to all

students during the lesson.

This lesson follows on from Alex’s Journey in Lesson 1. Students are encouraged to view career development as part of their life journey and identify their school-based learning as only one component of their life’s learning. The focus of the activities should be to encourage students to identify the many ways people acquire skills for the workplace. This would include learning from their interests and hobbies, short courses, clubs, community work and volunteering.

Vocational learning – learning that allows you to acquire skills to complete tasks. These skills are learnt at school, at TAFE and on the job, for example, communication skills.

Skills - the ability to do a particular task that comes from natural aptitude, training or practice

Knowledge - the learning you need to carry out a particular task

Talent - the capacity to develop skills in a particular area

Attitude - how we respond to different situations

Interests - what we like

Aptitude - our capacity to learn easily/readily

Vocational Education and Training - VE&T, vocational programs at a trade or paraprofessional level, designed to lead to employment

Students share their fi ndings and refl ections from the Lesson 1 Follow-up task, where they were asked to research up to three jobs they may wish to consider in the future:

Ask students to identify the way they learn at school [skill acquisition]:

Learning is important. How we learn, who helps us to learn and where we learn are useful to help us make wise choices as we grow. Through learning we develop skills and knowledge we need for the world of work. Discuss the following statements to engage students in an understanding that learning is fl exible and ongoing; students may wish to complete these statements:

Homework Task

Students complete Handout 2 – My family vocational learning tree. Their task is to:

• Identify the Vocational Learning Tree of at least two adults in their lives. Students plot the vocational learning of these adults as a diagram. They should be encouraged to make their diagrams or posters as interesting as possible to display in their classroom. For example: photos, whether the adults enjoyed their learning, how they use their learning today.

• Students plot their own vocational learning tree for the future, to include milestones for two, fi ve and 10 years from now.

• Students submit their vocational learning tree for classroom display.

• Students develop a list of guest speakers they may wish to invite to their classroom to speak about VE&T opportunities and the type of learning that takes place at their local TAFE.
