It was the summer of 1983. On the basis of a rigorous audition held at Boston’s famed Symphony Hall and presided over by Maestro Seiji Ozawa,I had been selected from over 150 applicants as a Leonard Bernstein Conducting Fellow at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. Only two other young conductors made the cut for the opportunity to spend that summer studying with several of the world’s most famed conductors. And, of course, the three of us were most excited for the opportunity to study and interact with Leonard Bernstein, who himself, decades earlier, spent a summer studying at Tanglewood, working then with the renowned Serge Koussevitzky. “Pyotr Ilyich” is what Bernstein nicknamed me for that summer (Tchaikovsky’s first and middle name), which Lenny would articulate with a pretend heavy Russian accent. Tanglewood provided many unforgettable experiences, but none more poignant than a program where each of the three Fellows conducted a work on the first half and Bernstein conducted the second half. The venue was the legendary outdoor Tanglewood (now Koussevitzky) Music Shed, packed to its 5,000-seat capacity, with thousands more sitting on the lawn. For this 24-year-old, it was quite an evening. The 2018-2019 National Philharmonic season celebrates Bernstein’s Centennial by focusing on music that he is most often associated with, as well as by presenting a sampling of his own compositions. Throughout the season, the National Philharmonic and I will retell the story of this arguably most important musician to hail from the Western Hemisphere. Please join me and all the musicians of the National Philharmonic for this very special yearlong celebration of LEONARD BERNSTEIN!

Giuseppe Verdi’s epic Requiem was the subject of a 1970 recording with Leonard Bernstein conducting. “As the session began, the maestro entered dramatically, picked up his baton, and said in a suitably solemn manner, ‘We are assembled, gentlemen, hopefully to record the “Ingemisco.” ’ That of course is the big tenor solo that taxes any singer, however great, to the limit. On this occasion there was extra uncertainty because the tenor had been brought in at the very last minute: the young and inexperienced Plácido Domingo. Domingo, as he faced Bernstein onstage, was plainly a little nervous, even more so when he heard the extremely slow tempo that the maestro was setting. He protested for a moment, but Bernstein waved his objections aside, giving him confidence that he would help him to make it.”
