THE STUDENT

I am Antonio Delgado, a 3rd Year student taking up Bachelor in Secondary Education (Major in English) at General de Jesus College.

THE STUDENT

Educational Technology or Ed Tech is part of our curriculum.

THE STUDENT

This portfolio summarizes my track of development through the subject.

ED TECH IN A NUT SHELL

Educational technology as a subject made me aware of the use of technology tools in instruction ranging from the traditional to the modern.

In essence, Ed Tech infused technology in our training as student-teachers to allow us to cope with today’s technology.

Page 7: My portfolio in ed tech

One of the first things that I learned in Educational Technology is that lecture copying is not the only learning experience available.

Dale’s Cone of Experiences

Page 8: My portfolio in ed tech

The cone of experience is a visual model meant to summarize dale’s classification system for varied types of learning experience.

Dale’s Cone of Experiences

Dale’s Cone of Experiences

The first level of experience are direct experiences which facilitates learning by doing.

Beginners usually need this type of learning experience.

Page 10: My portfolio in ed tech

Dale’s Cone of Experiences

Contrived experiences, meanwhile, are edited copies of reality such as the globe in the picture.

Okay, maybe we can’t use that one inside the room.

Dale’s Cone of Experiences

Dramatized experiences are simulated experiences such as tableau, role playing, and using puppets.

Earthquake drills may be said to fall under dramatized experiences. Through these, students are able to do simulations of actual experiences which are otherwise hard to bring inside the classroom.

Demonstration is the next level of experience. It is usually utilized in science classes.

Field trips allow the students to see first hand the places and objects that are discussed in the classroom.

Exhibits such as those we saw at the National Museum allow us a glimpse of actual artifacts.

The television and motion pictures has aided educational technology by allowing long-distance education.

And of course, we shouldn’t forget about still pictures, visual symbols and verbal symbols.

Page 18: My portfolio in ed tech

What’s wrong with using the chalkboard?

Why do we need varied learning experiences in the first place, when there is always the good old blackboard that is readily available in the classroom?

Nothing, it’s just that…

Page 19: My portfolio in ed tech

While still readily available, the chalkboard involves mainly verbal symbols, of which according to research, only 10% is retained by students.

The Learning Pyramid

Page 20: My portfolio in ed tech

And that is why we have to involve as many of the five senses (as possible) to facilitate more retention of concepts learned.

LEARNING THROUGH ED TECH 1 AND 2

I definitely learned a lot in our Educational Technology subjects.

But Ed Tech is not all about the technological gadgets and their use as instructional aids.

In the duration of the course, we also had to go through both traditional and modern avenues of learning.

Page 22: My portfolio in ed tech

As students aiming to become future teachers, we of course had to go through reporting in our Ed Tech subjects.

Reporting

Page 23: My portfolio in ed tech

We were able to use not only traditional visual aids in our reports, but also modern ways of presentation such as the PowerPoint and the DLP.

Reporting

Page 24: My portfolio in ed tech

Of course, one cannot simply do away with written assignments and reflection papers.

Page 25: My portfolio in ed tech

In Ed Tech, we also had to submit research papers as requirements.

It was stressed that we not only use web sources but published books as well.

Research Papers

Page 26: My portfolio in ed tech

Some of the research papers were submitted individually, while some were done by group to facilitate collaborative learning.

Research Papers

Page 27: My portfolio in ed tech

And of course, demonstrations.

Demonstrations

Page 28: My portfolio in ed tech

In our reports and demonstrations, we were able to have activities that utilized both traditional and modern methods and materials.

Activities

Page 31: My portfolio in ed tech

Sometimes we have to learn by feedback, such as the instance when our group used a music video in our demo.

Learning by Feedback

Page 32: My portfolio in ed tech

Our teacher reminded us that instructional materials are utilized for a purpose. The teacher suggested that we first prepare our students for our materials beforehand.

Learning by Feedback

Page 33: My portfolio in ed tech

Or that time when our slideshow presentation lacked an outline or flow of presentation. Sometimes, we do have to learn by our mistakes.

THE STUDENTAFTER ED TECH

Already, we are applying what we have learned in Ed Tech to our activities in the other subjects.

Page 35: My portfolio in ed tech

The use of computer software makes presentations such as storytelling more interesting.

Page 36: My portfolio in ed tech

THE STUDENTAFTER ED TECH

Learning about the varied learning experiences at the disposal of the teacher and being aware of the technological innovations available for instruction definitely left its mark on me.

Most of all, I learned that we use instructional aids to help in attaining our teaching objectives and not just for the sake of having them.
