    A Horary Question to

    Answer - Kris Svendsen

    From the President

The Saturn-Pluto conjunction in January has heralded a year like no other. Pluto –

coronavirus. How has that changed the world! But listening to a podcast recently I was

reminded how many Saturn words and images abound.

Saturn words: Lockdown. Quarantine. Curfew. Rules. Restrictions. Barriers. Responsibility.

    Consequences. Fear. Borders.

Saturn news: Old people dying from Covid 19. Two men vying for the US Presidency are the

    oldest candidates ever.

Saturn images: The knee. Taking the knee (Black Lives Matter) and the knee that killed

George Floyd. Old man bring pushed over by police.

  • Saturn in Aquarius (air): I can’t breathe. Ventilators.

A few short months of Saturn in Aquarius has meant a shared vision across the globe for the

equality of all – Black Lives Matter. At the end of June Saturn returns to Capricorn until a

week before Christmas, when it joins Jupiter in Aquarius for yet another major cycle. At our

next online meeting, Mari Garcia will examine this cycle, the start of 200 years of Jupiter-

Saturn in Air, after 200 years in earth signs. Will we at last begin to understand that our

    materialistic outlook is unsustainable?

Many thanks to Vivien Lowe for her excellent research and her pioneering Zoom meeting in

June. Our July meeting will also be online, but with the lifting of restrictions we are hoping

to get back to face to face meetings before long. I will let you know as soon as we have

    definite information.

    Stay safe and stay well

    Cate

FAASA is pleased to announce that in

August the TS Rooms reopen and we

are hoping to hold a live meeting on

    Saturday 8th August.

  • (Un)Lucky in Love: Kylie

    Minogue - Mari Garcia (SA)

Kylie Minogue, Australia’s ‘girl next door’ dominated Australian television in the 1980’s in her

role as Charlene Mitchell, a schoolgirl turned garage mechanic in the soap opera,

Neighbours. While her character Charlene’s on-screen romance culminated in marital bliss in

the wedding episode which aired in 1987, the same cannot be said of Kylie.

Her off-screen romance with co-actor, Jason Donovan lasted until she left him for INXS front-

man, Michael Hutchence. The relationship lasted until 1991 when Huchence left her for

supermodel Helena Christensen. Her next long-term relationship was with Olivier

Martinez. They were together for five years between 2002 to 2007 and he supported her

through her ordeal with breast cancer. They parted ways just after Kylie was given the all

clear. In 2008, she met Andres Velencoso and was with him until last year.

In a recent interview, she revealed that she was still recovering from her recent break-up,

  • crying herself to sleep. In between the long-term relationships she has dated numerous

‘names’ including rocker Lenny Kravitz and Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay, singer Robbie

Williams as well as Tim Jefferies, the owner of Hamilton's art gallery in London. So why is it

that the princess of pop who is universally adored by the public as well as by her exes -

many of whom still call her a dear friend - is so unlucky in love? An interesting question and

perhaps one to which astrology can provide some answers.

    Primary Motivation

We start by looking at just what is the driving force in Kylie Minogue’s chart signified by her

Ascendant at 26 Cancer. Her Primary Motivation is emotional need and she will look to

realise it through nurturing of herself and others. The placement of the ruler of the

Ascendant will indicate where in her life she realises this and we see the Moon, ruler of

Cancer, in the sign of Gemini in the Twelfth house. This suggests that the emotional

nurturing she seeks may lead to difficulties, including sorrow or isolation. Alternatively, the

realisation of emotional security is achieved secretly or away from prying eyes. The Moon is

also square Pluto ramping up the emotional intensity.

The Moon’s condition is compromised as in the sign of Gemini, the Moon is peregrine. A

peregrine planet is one that has no dignity in any one of the five levels in that sign: therefore

this Moon has no rulership, exaltation, triplicity, term or face dignity in any degree of

Gemini. This is a worry as a peregrine planet is unreliable and ostracised. It has no place to

call its own. Ibn-Ezra tells us that a peregrine planet,

“...is like a person who is not in his own country.”2

So what does this say for Kylie? Basically, the realisation of her Primary Motivation is difficult

if she relies solely on the Moon. If she allows her emotional needs to be the sole indicator or

driver, she will not feel fulfilled or realise happiness. She may instead find herself alienated

    and isolated.

However, all is not lost as the next we can look at are the triplicity lords of the

Ascendant. As Cancer is a Water sign and this is a daytime chart, the rulers are Venus, Mars

and the Moon. Can any of these help her? To begin with, we have to discount the Moon as

we have already seen it is in precarious condition. Venus is just as bad as it is also in the

Twelfth and combust as it is too close to the Sun. Ibn-Ezra describes a combust planet as

being “like a dying person.”3 Mars is also in the Twelfth, it has no essential dignity in

Gemini, also combust and square Pluto. All three planets are out of sect as they are all

nocturnal planets and prefer to be in the opposite hemisphere to the Sun. Their placement

with the Sun tells us that they are not going to function effectively in delivering satisfaction

and their aspects to an outer adds further difficulty.

We turn then to the next level of rulership -- the term ruler -- to see if it can help: this is the

planet that rules particular degrees of a sign. At 26 degrees of Cancer, the term ruler is

  • Saturn4. Looking to Saturn we see it is in Aries, in the Tenth and conjunct the North

Node. Saturn is in the sign of its fall, again not easy as a planet in fall is at rock bottom

however it can work its way up and this Saturn is elevated by position as it is in an angular

    house. Ibn-Ezra tells us:

“When a planet is its fall, it indicates worry, distress and hardship.”5

From this we can deduce that relationships will present hardships for Kylie. Deborah

Houlding describes a planet that is essentially debilitated but accidentally dignified6 as being

able to make a lot of what it has7. This Saturn can help deliver happiness and satisfaction in

Kylie’s life providing she is willing to work hard -- very hard. Saturn is an exacting task

master and it is square to the Ascendant, plugging into the Cross of Matter and Kylie can

realise her primary drive for emotional security through hard work and maintaining her

integrity, credibility and status. What we know of Kylie Minogue is that she has worked

diligently since she left Neighbours to develop her musical career and judging from the

accolades she has received, she has been very successful. But this has come at a price. In a

recent interview, she was quoted as saying:

“You do get wrapped up in the whole thing and it leaves no time for anything else.”8

Here we have an interesting insight from Kylie suggesting that her work and her commitment

to it demand so much and leave her very little space for any other activities. Does this help

or hinder her relationships? Let us consider the other indicators and see if they support this.

    Venus

The significator of love and relationships is at 0 degrees of Gemini in the Twelfth conjunct

the Sun. Not a very good start as we have discussed; Venus is cadent in the Twelfth,

combust or ‘burnt’ due to its proximity to the Sun and out of sect. The ability of Venus to do

her job with regard to love, beauty and attraction is severely limited. It is interesting to note

that in the Placidus chart, the Venus is in the Tenth house and it rules the Taurus MC. Kylie

has been a figure in the entertainment industry for 25 years and her classic looks have made

her a celebrated icon. We can say that Venus gives her the beauty however, it ‘falls’ to the

Twelfth by Whole Sign and even though it still rules the MC, this move to the Twelfth

suggests that the pursuit of fame, status and popularity has the potential of causing sorrow

    and isolation.

This is another testimony that echoes Kylie’s own words in the above quote saying that the

pursuit of her career goals leaves her with little time to do anything else let alone dedicate

time and energy to the cultivation of a relationship.

    The Seventh House

Looking at the Seventh house, we see Capricorn on the cusp and with no planets in the

Seventh, we look to the ruler for indications as to whom she is attracted to and where does

  • she find them. We see Saturn, lord of Capricorn in Aries, in the sign of its fall, conjunct the

North Node and situated in the Tenth. We have seen that Saturn can deliver some good

however it is a difficult task master, making demands which exclude everything else. With

regard to Saturn and its conjunction to the North Node, Abu Ma’shar tells us:

“...if the malefics are with it [Head], it increases their harming ..”9

Here we have additional testimony to Saturn’s condition and how its proximity to the North

Node exacerbates its influence. The reference to harm underlines the fact that the impact of

malefics will always take its toll no matter how good they are. Yes, Saturn gives

perseverance, steadfastness and focus and relationships are realised through career and

status. With the ruler of the Seventh in the Tenth we can say that she looks for, and finds

potential partners as a consequence of her position but this is not always good for her

personally. In another recent interview she revealed that she gets her staff to meet any new

men before she agrees to go out with them. She said:

“I work a lot and I have a team, my people, and there are a few whispers down the corridor

    and it's stuff like that.”10

Saturn forms a square to the Ascendant and a trine to Jupiter. Being plugged in to the Cross

of Matter does increase its effectiveness and its applying trine to the great benefic may have

some benefit however it remains to be seen if this actually helps or hinders Saturn’s

responsibility to the Seventh house matter of relationships. Saturn has ‘sight’ of Capricorn so

in that it is effective in maintaining the issue of relationships as a matter of priority but it may

not always provide the best options.

In an interview a decade ago with Michael Parkinson, Kylie said she regretted not getting

married in her early 20’s and believes she has lost the chance of marital bliss.

“For quite a number of years I've looked at my parents. They are still together, still in love,

they miss each other madly, they hold hands and canoodle. They're the best example for me.

It slightly pains me to think I will never have that. My chance has already gone. They did

    that when they were 22.”11

If this is so, can she find that someone special at this time of her life?

    Triplicity Lords of Venus

We look to the triplicity lords of Venus to help us see the quality of relationships at different

times of her life. To find the Triplicity Lords of Venus we look to the sign she is in which is

Gemini. Gemini is an Air sign and in a daytime chart so the order of the Air triplicities is

Saturn, Mercury and Jupiter with Saturn ruling the 1st third of life, Mercury the 2nd third and

    Jupiter the 3rd.12

Her first third of life, covering birth to approximately 25 years has Saturn as the lord and, as

  • we have seen it is a demanding task master and Kylie spent the 1st third of her life working

hard to establish and develop her career leaving little time to pursue relationships. In this

period she was involved firstly with Jason Donovan, then Michael Hutchence – one was

rather fraternal and the other tempestuous and also heartbreaking as Hutchence left her for

    model Helena Christensen.

Mercury as the lord of the 2nd third of life, between the ages of 25 – 50 years, is also in the

cadent Twelfth and is Void of Course and square Uranus and Pluto suggesting that in this

period relationships are intense but also fairly unstable, unreliable or precarious. Mercury is

also sextiling Jupiter which does bring some benefit but suggests that the impact is more one

of exaggeration, excess or even of unrealistic optimism. In this period she was involved with

Olivier Martinez and Andres Velencoso, both of whom she declared to be ‘the one’ on several

occasions but sadly neither lived up to her expectations. This certainly echoes the testimony

of the Mercury as the significator of relationships at this time of her life.

The last third, after the age of 50 years, is ruled by Jupiter in Leo in the Second

house. Jupiter is in neutral dignity, in a succedent house and it trines Saturn and makes a

wide square14 to the MC. A succedent planet is reactive as opposed to proactive (planet in

an angular house) but is not passive like a cadent planet. This is the first of the rulers that is

out of the Twelfth and not in a corrupted state, suggesting that perhaps she finds the

nurturing and succour she craves in relationships later in life as the last third of life promises

    some better relationship prospects.

    Update

Kylie turned fifty in May 2018 and in July she confirmed a new romance with Paul

Solomons. She met him through mutual friends and they quickly developed a close

friendship but were keen to keep their relationship secret. In March 2020, Kylie spoke about

her romance, “Who says you can’t be soppy and romantic later in life? Particularly when you

find a good and true love. I feel even more thankful and lucky that I have this in my life

    now…”15

  • Sun Talk

All the planets, including the Earth, revolve around the Sun, the centre of Solar System in

which we live, and the source of most of its light and heat. The Earth’s relationship with the

Sun defines the shape and timing of our alternating days and nights as the ‘revolution’ on

our own axis means the Earth shows an ever-different face of the Earth in reference to the

luminous, effulgent Centre which the Sun represents.

We all ‘know’ these simple facts, but I’d invite you to take a moment to actually visualise this

within your minds eye. And perhaps to remind yourself that the entire Solar System is

moving through space at the mind-boggling speed of 45,000 miles per hour (72,000

    kilometres)!

The Sun and Moon are not actually planets, and were traditionally called ‘The Luminaries’.

Current use of this word is usually limited to its meaning as a ‘notable person’, but the older

meanings refer to lamp, light, glory, source or bringer of spiritual light or holiness. Likewise,

the Sun in the horoscope represents many different levels of what the notion of ‘Centre’

might mean, as portrayed by the evolution of the etymology! And its meaning evolves as we

    mature.

So the Sun refers to ‘Me’ as the sense of ‘self-reference’ built up from birth onwards, largely

consisting of ego-structures as we identify with our parent’s influence and perceptions of us,

as well as how we feel received (or not) by the world. This may or may not be congruent

with who we truly feel ourselves to be. So at this level, the Sun is about “I, me, mine … ‘my’

personality, desires, character, options, gifts” and so on.

However, the Sun also concerns our deeper sense of unique individuality which is beyond

social conditioning, and which seeks acknowledgement and expression in our life. The

awareness of this often goes in tandem with our recognition both of being part of something

far greater than ‘just me’, and also of being uniquely, recognisably, ‘just me’! What a

delicious paradox does this Mystery bring into our lives! As if to know and embrace the Light

We Are in our central core requires us to heartfully meet the duality symbolised by Day and

Night … Me + Not Me, Stillness + Speed, Light + Shadow, Individual + Collective, Spirit +

    Matter … and so on.

In the words of Dane Rudhyar

(“New Mansion for New Men” (1971) Servir Publications, pp.103-104)

“The melody of light! … mystics of all ages have taken pains to show that the outer brilliance

we behold is not the reality of the Sun, but only it’s outer glory. … The “Heart of the Sun” is

the unknown Deity; the photosphere, His “Robe of Glory”. It is the song of the Multitudes

that are the cells of the divine Body. It is the song of the celestial Hosts conveying to the

outer world the inner reality of the One who is the beginning, the middle and the end of all

there is in the solar system, the One who is drawing all things to Himself that they may

  • partake of His divinity, the One who is the supreme Integrator, the All-encompassing and

    Compassionate: Whom men call God.”

    Apollo, Coronis and ‘plagues’

Apollo was the foster-father of Chiron, to whom he was given by a shepherd who found him

left abandonned by his mother, Philyra. Chiron learned numerous skills from Apollo, including

music and medicine, of whom Apollo was an original patron. We find an interesting story,

resonant for ‘these times’ which recounts that Coronis, a Thessalian princess, was beloved of

Apollo. She, however, betrayed him and such was Apollo’s rage that he enlisted the help of

his sister Artemis to do away with in an act of revenge.

But Artemis went into ‘over-kill’ and many thousands of people were struck down with her

‘plague arrows’. Apollo eventually relented, called her off, and saved the unborn child of

Coronis. This was none other than Asklepius, who was given into the care of Chiron and

under his tutelage became one of the best-known healers of all time. There are still many

Asklepions, or temples of healing, in present-day Greece, most notably at Epidaurus. These

ancient sites still carry to this day a high-energy healing ‘charge’.

So the cycle completes. Chiron was fostered by Apollo, whose consort’s child was given into

the care of Chiron, and became the great healer Asklepius.

    Corona-virus

The word ‘corona’ means ‘crown’ and is also the name given to the “Ring of Fire”

surrounding the Sun as seen during Annular Solar Eclipses, like the one coming up on June

21st. This occurs when the Moon is too far away from the Earth (therefore seen as smaller)

to cover the Sun. See the links below for full astronomical descriptions. Appropriately

enough, June 21st is also “Father’s Day” in the UK, so this period of time is auspicious for

work with ‘the father’s line’: your own father, grandfather, great-grandfather. See, feel,

know, the legacy you have inherited. How do you relate to this? Honour your own male

lineage and allow yourself to become aware of ‘what needs to happen’ in terms of healing.

Offer this up to the Greater Light … ‘Being and Seeing’ rather than ‘Doing’ …

This Eclipse will be visible in an arc which begins in central West Africa and proceeds through

the Middle East, culminating in China, near Wuhan and Beijing, and fading into the Western

Pacific Ocean. (Media reports from yesterday – fresh outbreaks of COVID-19 in the latter,

with selective repeat ‘lockdowns’.) It also sits prominently in the horoscopes of Donald

Trump and Boris Johnson. Who will be eclipsing who or what? Or ‘being eclipsed’ by what?

(BJ ‘eclipsed’ this week, making a ‘policy U-turn’ following a plea from the soft-spoken and

charming football star Marcus Rashford. Perhaps a smart PR move, considering that the Solar

Eclipse will fall on BJ’s 9th house North Node in the sign of Cancer, widely conjunct his MC.

Issue was one of school lunches. Cancer = nourishment. Astrology ‘does it again’!)

    A Contemplation:

A Solar Eclipse occurs always at New Moon, with the Sun and Moon conjunct in zodiac terms,

    https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/491http://link.marketinggalaxy.com/xK6v?recipient_id=143rsXV0O0Yc9ER9Y2uWQso0_PHFNp-xTc

  • placed on the same side of the Earth. The Luminaries (Yin-Yang) unite and the Moon

obscures the Light of the Sun from view. This may reveal some of the habits, attitudes

or typical emotional reactions that may obscure our Inner Light. Our ‘conditioning’, in a word.

While the Moon occludes our view of the Sun, note that it is also shining of the Dark Side of

the Moon, the face we never see! A beautiful piece of symbolism, indeed.

In the darkness of an eclipse we may be subtly shown ‘that which is hidden’. Perhaps some

internal darkness or destructiveness is revealed and dissolved through the light of

understanding and compassion. Perhaps we are introduced to some aspect of our soul,

hitherto quite unknown, or which has long been in the dark, perhap being protected, waiting

for the right time to be revealed.

There are still cultures where by custom people do not go out during eclipses, but stay at

home and pray. (‘Lockdown’, anyone?!) An aura of fear has been generated around eclipses

in the collective psyche. Psychologically, they are periods when the boundary between

consciousness and the unconscious is very porous. While this can initiate a time of

transformative inner work, if we ignore or remain oblivious to the shifting tides of these

cosmic energies we may experience a ‘bleed-through’ from our own unconscious, finding

ourselves subject to strong emotions which we may act out, sometimes to the detriment of

    ourselves and others.

So, in brief, it makes sense to regard eclipses as sacred times which need to be honoured

and contained, and perhaps prepared for in a practical way. Being willing to meet whatever

arises, there is nothing to fear. Eclipses help the process of transition, cutting ties and

shining their dark light on what is ending, so we can give it a ‘decent burial’ and feel the loss

as we welcome ‘the beginning new’ (known or unknown).

Solar Eclipse POI (Points Of Interest)

We are now in an eclipse season which features a Lunar Eclipse on June 5th followed by

a Solar Eclipse near the Solstice on June 21st. followed by another Lunar Eclipse on July 5th.

These few days contain some interesting astrological details! Look out for the

    following:

Mercury turning Rx June 18th, so bringing a tone of reflectivity throughout the eclipse

period, turning Direct on July 12th, so approximately the exit from the eclipse season.

We are invited to review, reflect, welcome that which may be returning to our life

after perhaps having been ‘buried’ or ‘eclipsed’ for a while …

The huge concentration of activity around the North Node – the ‘Dragon’s Head’. This

point is deeply motivational, drawing us away from the past and towards the future.

So what do we need to salvage and take with us? And what will the “Ring of Fire” burn up

completely so that we can walk away, freed from ‘something’? Saying our goodbyes and

giving gratitude for what is leaving our life. This applies just as much to our internal process

as it does to ‘making our way in the world’ …
