One can physically live in a community, but still not feel like one is a part of the community. The commonality amongst a group of people and a sense of belonging is what really makes a community. Known for it's massive spring floods. NH Feed mill, one of the oldest businesses, Police station and where Christmas tree light-up celebration is held. The Waterlot, known restaurant by outsiders. Nith River dam, higher then usual.

    My Town......My CommunityMy Identity

    Nestled within the Region of Waterloo is thegrowing town of New Hamburg.

    One can physically live in a community, but stillnot feel like one is a part of the community. Thecommonality amongst a group of people and asense of belonging is what really makes acommunity.

    This book documents the journey I took walkingand driving around my hometown of NewHamburg and is a reflection of my communitythese past few days. The photos are paths intown I walked on as a child and places that hadgreat meaning to me, as well as others. They arethe common places that create bonds betweenpeople. Institutions where recreational and leisureactivities take place such as sports, restaurantsand hangout spots, education and learning suchas schools, businesses and places of work, andfaith and religious practices such as churches.

    The journey starts on my front porch....

    This is the New Hamburg sign covered in snow,seen by people who pass by our community onthe highway.

    Nith River that runs through every part of thistown, which made it a great starting point for acommunity.

    New Hamburg historical Grand Stand burnt downin 2007. Many activities have been watched fromthese stands including horse raising, baseball,Mennonite relief sale and fall fairs. Every child inthis town has a memory here.

    The old New Hamburg Arena recently replaced.

    Old Brittany Restaurant and former family home

    Downtown core. Local businesses. This is apopular restaurant to the locals. Peel street.

    Old Factory still in existence.

    It has a rich heritage and is full of interestinghistory. This is what makes it so unique and tiespeople to this town. It is growing into acontemporary rural town with new developmentsand constant changes. New Hamburg is creatingits newly formed identity which history will record.

    Local Newspaper, other businesses andapartments keep the town prospering. FormerlyQueens Hotel in 1800s.

    Local bar or commercial Hotel, Eddly's.

    Huron street down town NH. Hotels were themain businesses for the first century of thecommunity's life,starting in the 1850's. Localtransportation consisted of horses.
