My Daily Inference Book This Daily Inference Book is a resource for providing students with scenarios that allow them to practice and understand inferences. Using these books is a quick and easy way to insure that students are getting to practice on a regular basis. The set includes a cover page, a brief explanation of inferences, and 40 reading comprehension scenarios. Prep the Books Copy the cover page and other pages that you want to use each week. You might want/need to cut the pages apart in order to manipulate and place them the way that you want them. You might also want to copy the pages double sided, but I personally prefer not to do this. I like having a blank side on the back to have students write a brief explanation of why they chose their answer before the correct answer is given. Using the Books I’m sure you have already been teaching students to make inferences as they read, but before you begin using these books I recommend a quick review. Some students may be more familiar with predictions than inferences. Be sure to clarify the difference between the two. Inferences and Predictions: In both inferences and predictions you use the text to support your ideas. You also use your background knowledge (life experiences) to help support these ideas. Prediction : A prediction is a guess about what we think will happen in the future. It is almost always confirmed. Inference: An inference is made about things that have happened in the past or at the current time. Inferences are rarely confirmed, but they are logical based on what we have learned (text) and what we know (background knowledge).

Once students have their books and you have discussed inferences you are ready to go. The inference page in the student book is a resource that can also be used as part of your discussion on inferences. As you work through a scenario you will want to read it together. The key is to really have students focus on understanding what they are reading. Have them think about both the text and what they already know. Read the question and answer choices together. Then have students choose their answer and write it in the box. Here is where I like to have students turn their page over and explain why they made this choice. This step might not be an option for you if you are limited on time, so you might prefer to do it verbally instead. You can do this by having students do a partner share explaining their answer choice. I actually like doing both when I have the time. This is a good way for students to see what others are thinking. Teaching inferencing to young readers can be difficult. The major obstacle is that they just don’t have the life experience (background knowledge). Using these scenarios and working through them together, even talking with a partner, helps students to develop a type of thinking that is helpful in inferring.

Reading Inferences
As a reader you may read something and find that the words don’t tell the whole story.
You might have to think about it a little bit more. You might need to think about the clues
from the text along with your background knowledge (what you know from life) to make
a logical guess or an inference about something.
Clues from the text + Background knowledge
= An inference
Example: Mark’s mom gave him some money. He went to the candy store.
You can infer, or make an inference that Mark bought candy, even though you didn’t
read that he did. You can infer this because you know he had money (from the text) and
because that is normally what happens when you go to a candy store (background
knowledge). We may not ever know if Mark bought candy or not, but our logic tells us
that he did.
