WHAT CHEAT SHEET? • The cheat sheet was the job description from the employer. It contains all

When the employer asks you to explain what you did for a living, only 2 out of 10 applicants will start with the employer’s cheat sheet and use it to create the perfect answer that will show the employer that they have the skills that the employer was looking for. In other words, they connected the dots between what they did and what the employer was looking for.

E. Spruce yourself up, combed hair, brushed teeth and a recent bath will go a long way to getting you a longer interview. Dress for success is how you would you would go to work. If you are going to work at IBM, then please wear a suit. Dress for Success for most entry and/or re-entry jobs is a polo shirt and khakis (for building trades and warehouse you are already over-dressed). Do not go to Home Depot in a suit unless you want to be a business sales rep or a senior manager if want to get hired.

F. Put on you walking shoes and go to the store you applied for between 10 AM – Noon or 2 – 4 PM (depending upon the business) to introduce yourself as someone who lives in the neighborhood, who applied online and ask if the manager could “please” pull your application. We had a manager say the other day that the sweetest sound is an applicant saying “I just live down the street…”

G. Have a direct contact number where you pick up the phone or (if a message phone) where you can return an employer’s call within 30 minutes (if not sooner). You need to have your voice mail on and accepting calls (not full of messages). You need to remove all cute or profound messages or music and replace that with your name. Important to remember, you have one hour to

return a call before the employer calls the next on their list. If you don’t return their call in a prompt manner, they believe that you are no longer interested or you are already working.

H. DO NOT CALL THEM UNLESS THEY CALLED YOU. Do not do these if you want the job as the employer will see you as too lazy, uninterested or shy to come in person.

Walmart is opening a Neighborhood Market store in the Sunnyslope area of Phoenix. Angela Gonzales Senior Reporter- Phoenix Business Journal Walmart is opening a Neighborhood Market store in the Sunnyslope area, and is looking to hire up to 95 people to staff it. Both full and part-time positions are available, said T.J. Arthur, store manager. “Good jobs are good news for Sunnyslope,” he said. “We’re thrilled because this is an opportunity both to better serve existing Walmart customers in the Sunnyslope community and provide up to 95 quality jobs to area residents.” Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart also has a program called the Veterans Welcome Home Commitment that offers a job to any qualified veteran who has been honorably discharged within the past 12 months. The new neighborhood market store is slated to open this summer at 115 E. Dunlap Ave., Phoenix, in a former Food City store that is being redeveloped. Walmart has opened a temporary hiring center in the same shopping center at 17 E. Dunlap Ave., Suite 1. The neighborhood market stores are usually about 38,000 square feet and employ no more than 100 people, while typical Walmart stores are about 106,000 square feet and employ roughly 200 people. The Walmart Supercenters are about 182,000 square feet and employ about 300 people. Michael Hayes, owner of Momentum Specialized Staffing, said this is good news for the Sunnyslope area. “Walmart gets a bad rap as an employer,” Hayes said. “These are great positions for someone starting out and there are few opportunities available for young folks.”

Hayes has seen his share of people who are clueless when it comes to job hunting. “I bet they will have to process hundreds of applications because people will show up with inappropriate clothes, no IDs or work history to copy down and present to the interviewer,” he said.

New Arizona law assures insurance navigators can't have criminal background Angela Gonzales Senior Reporter- Phoenix Business Journal For those worried that standards were too low for navigators who help the uninsured find health coverage on the exchange, Gov. Jan Brewer signed the Navigator Bill into law. The goal is to keep criminals from gaining access to personal information of those seeking health coverage under the Arizona Insurance Marketplace, created under the Affordable Care Act. {WHAT A STEP BACKWARDS!} Under House Bill 2508, it is required that navigators or certified application counselors be licensed through the Arizona Department of Insurance. They must be: At least 18 years old Have not committed certain acts, felonies, or misdemeanors Have provided proof of certification the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Has successfully completed the ADOI’s background check requirements, or has completed one required by their employer to be a navigator or CAC. The licensing requirements for navigators and CACs are effective Oct. 1. Michael Ward, president of the Greater Phoenix Association of Health Underwriters, said he is pleased to see the bill enacted to protect consumers. Henry GrosJean, a small business insurance broker, is not so impressed. “The bill represents the path of least resistance from HHS, which has deterred any states from mandating that the navigators be insurance-licensed,” he said. “So, the impression that consumers will be protected from someone who is unlicensed and also does not have errors and omission insurance will be an illusion.” ===========================================================
