The bar graph above illustrates the number of male and females who filled out the questionnaires for our music video audience research task. Altogether, there were 9 males and 2 females who completed the questionnaire.

We distributed our questionnaires out to sixth form students and teachers in our college as well as distributing it out to people from outside of our school in order for us to be provided with results from people who were of all different age groups, ranging from 17-29+. By doing this, we would be provided with an insight into different peoples taste of music and their likes and dislikes of their favourite music genre based on the age they were. From the results, it is obvious that people aged between 17-20 and 21-24 watch more music videos and those aged 25-28 and 29+ are the ones that watch the least.

From my results, the majority of people who answered my questionnaire stated that they preferred to listen to ‘Hip Hop’ music, closely followed by ‘R&B.’ This suggests that both of these music genres are exceptionally popular with audiences and is well-liked with those from all different age ranges.

As I needed to know about my audiences opinions I decided to ask them this question to get a general answer from my audience so I could find out why they preferred this music genre. This answer lets respondents right freely, and provides me with a more opinionated answer so that I gain a better understanding into what it is audiences like in music videos. It is also good for me to listen and know what my respondents opinions are as they may be my target audience for my music video.

Participant 1:Participant 1: said that the reason that they liked to listen to ‘Hip Hop’ was due to the fact that they liked the variety of the genre, the beat of the music and the creative lyrics.

Participant 2:Participant 2: said that they enjoyed listening to ‘R&B’ and ‘Rock’ for the reason that they liked the variety of music in the genre, the tempo of the music and the beat of the song.

Participant 3:Participant 3: answered that they prefer the ‘R&B’ and ‘Hip Hop’ genre because they like to beat of the music.

Participant 4:Participant 4: claimed that they preferred ‘Rock’ music because of the beat of the music.

Participant 5: Participant 5: said that they enjoyed to listen to ‘Hip Hop’ and ‘Indie’ music because of the beat of the music, they love the artist and their videos

Participant 6:Participant 6: said that they prefer the ‘Hip Hop’ genre for the reason that they like the beat of the song and they love the style of the artist and the way there are portrayed in their videos.

Participant 8: Participant 8: said that they love the ‘R&B’ genre because they are especially into the big beats and love the style of the R&B videos.

Participant 9: Participant 9: said that they love the ‘Hip Hop’ genre for the reason that it allows and expresses opinions about the artists life and style of music that is portrayed in their videos.

Participant 10:Participant 10: said that it makes me happy to listen to the ‘R&B’ genre as I love the style of music.

Participant 11:Participant 11: said that they love ‘R&B’ and ‘Hip Hop’ because it has the best artists in these videos and the lyrics are always good.

From these results it is clear that the majority of respondents who completed the questionnaire explained that the convention that appeals to them most in their favourite genre of music is the beat of music which ranked first and the lyrics of the song coming in second. Both of these conventions are exceptionally popular in music videos and from these results are what draws in audiences.

From these results, it is noticeable that the respondents favourite artist to listen to is Kanye West, with Rihanna coming second. Both of these singers are artists who represent the ‘R&B’ genre. This depicts, that the ‘R&B’ genre and the artists linked to it, is undoubtedly popular with audiences from all different age ranges. This is a great result for us, as our artist will be representing the ‘R&B’ genre and should therefore reach a wide target audience.

Participant 2:Participant 2: explained that they love videos that include a narrative, that is, telling a story through the song.

Participant 3:Participant 3: said that they like the setting, special effects and a narrative which unfolds throughout the song.

From the results it is obvious that most people tend to watch 4Music, whilst each of the MTV channels came second. In fact, almost every single MTV channel came as the audiences second choice, perhaps suggesting that MTV is a popular channel which reaches people from all different age ranges. Additionally, the results also illustrate how most people tend to watch music videos nowadays as another way of being able to listen to their favourite song. Out of everyone the results showed that only two people do not watch music videos at all.

From these results, it is clear that most of the respondents explained that they consume their music by using downloads from iTunes and online purchasing and the one that came in second was free downloads. Clearly, this suggests that most audiences nowadays tend to consume their music over the internet by downloading their music from websites or iTunes rather than going out to shops and buying physical copies of a CD.

These results exemplify that most respondents who completed this questionnaire tend to spend under £20.00 per year on music, which from the results we gathered on question nine we discovered that most people nowadays download their music online for free so they rarely need to pay for the music they listen to, hence why the amount of money they do spend on music per year is so low.
