香港國際學校, 香港大潭水塘道700號 Overview of the workshop: Are you looking for a course that is practical, inspiring, musical, and fun all while helping you become a better teacher? Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance began over 35 years ago in Wisconsin (that's at least 500 years in education trend years!) based on the best practices of successful music teachers. The success and durability of the CMP project is due to the fact that the model is based on strong, intuitive pedagogy and not on a specific teaching styles, products to purchase or technologies to install. CMP is a planning process that provides band, orchestra, choir and general music teachers with a system for improving their own teaching and collaborating with their music colleagues. From choosing quality repertoire to crafting rich outcomes, and to assessing the unique needs of real students, CMP helps to connect and integrate best practice pedagogical elements into student-centered teaching plans. The interactive training process helps music teachers clarify their priorities without losing the essence of their own approach. One paradox of master teaching is that it comes across as organic and easy, even though it is thoughtfully and carefully crafted. Similarly, this model for planning instruction seems quite simple and intuitive, but contains the possibility for infinitely complex and rich thinking. Margaret Jenks, Randy Swiggum, and Chris Gleason will lead participants through the CMP model and share how CMP is used in their ensembles and classes. Participants will take part in rehearsal demonstrations and see many examples of projects, portfolios, concert ideas, teaching plans, technology uses and student artifacts. Outcomes for the workshop: CMP will provide a model for a planning process that gives teachers a framework to connect their repertoire to high level skill, conceptual and affective teaching outcomes, all in a dynamic, student-centered teaching plan. What does the model look like? Repertoire Selection: Great repertoire is key to deeper thinking and musical understanding, but finding it and knowing how to identify a musical gem is more complicated than it seems. Participants will learn to analyze their repertoire selections for greater teaching depth potential and rediscover the magic of well selected repertoire. Analysis: It is such a dry sounding word, but in CMP we see imagination, curiosity and possibility at the heart of analysis. Participants will learn methods of score study that will not only help shape curricular outcomes, but also inspire creative teaching strategies. Outcomes: Based on repertoire analysis, participants will create meaningful outcomes that address skills, knowledge and affective needs of their own students. Strategies: The teacher's playground! After determining what their students should know and what the repertoire naturally teaches, participants will design creative and effective strategies for a variety of learning styles. Assessment: Integrated into the teaching model, a great assessment is simply a strategy that is used for evaluative purposes, which means that the fun doesn't have to stop at "Strategies". With a great mix of philosophy and practicality, the CMP workshop offers both exciting intellectual rigor and something that you can immediately use in your classroom. It will change how you think about preparing for class next week, as well as offer you long term pedagogy challenges. Did we mention it is also fun? It really is! And we aren't the only crazy three people who think this way. Come and see why hundreds of teachers make the CMP workshop their number one priority every summer!

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS

MARGARET JENKS Choir and General Music presenter Margaret Jenks is the current chair-elect of the Wisconsin CMP committee and is committed to higher level music education both in her teaching of elementary and middle school students as well in her work with teacher mentoring and training. Her teaching and performing career has taken her from Freiburg, Germany to Eagan, Minnesota and Waukesha, Wisconsin, where she taught at Butler Middle School and North High School. While at Butler, Margaret created the Bridge Ensemble, an innovative choir which gained attention for its unique approach of pairing cognitively disabled and gifted and talented students. The Bridge Ensemble appeared by invitation at

the Wisconsin Choral Directors State Convention in a moving and memorable performance. Margaret has performed extensively as soprano soloist in such works as the Bach Magnificat, Haydn's Creation, and Handel's Messiah. Presently, Margaret designs and teaches the Introductory Choir programs of the Madison Youth Choirs, Tallis (for boys) and Colla Voce (for girls). She also conducts Purcell and Holst, two of MYC’s performing boychoirs. Holst, which she founded and co-directs with colleague Randal Swiggum, is an advanced choir for middle school age boys who are moving through their voice change. The choir performs treble as well as SATB repertoire. As a member of the Wisconsin CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance) Team, she helps teach a summer institute for teachers, focusing on a deeper rehearsal experience for young musicians. Margaret serves as the WCDA Boychoir Repertoire & Standards Chairperson and especially enjoys the challenge of finding unexplored choral works for elementary and middle school boys. A frequent guest conductor, she recently directed the APAC Choral Festival in Seoul, Korea and worked with music teachers from across southeast Asia in a CMP workshop. She co-conducted the first-ever Middle School Boys SATB Honor Choir at the Central Division ACDA Conference in Cincinnati and conducted a similar ensemble for the North Central Division Honor Choir in 2012. Margaret lives in Madison with her husband Andy, and their own lively boys, Nathaniel, 11, and Simon, 8, both of whom think singing in a boy choir is the coolest thing ever. Margaret loves to read, bike, hike and climb, cook without recipes, and create puzzles and scavenger hunts for boys. Contact Margaret at mjenks@madisonyouthchoirs.org

CHRIS GLEASON Band workshop presenter Chris Gleason earned his BME at UW-Eau Claire in 1997 and his Masters Degree from UW-LaCrosse in 2002. He has taught band in the East Troy School District and the LaCrosse School District. He currently teaches concert band and jazz ensemble at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Under Mr. Gleason's direction the Patrick Marsh Band Program has increased by over 100 members from 2004 to 2010. Mr. Gleason's 8th Grade Band has performed at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda, the "New Wisconsin Promise Conference", and the 2006 and 2009 Wisconsin State Music Conferences. The Patrick Marsh 8th Grade Band commissioned composer, Samuel R. Hazo and performed the world premiere of Blue and Green Music at the 2009 Wisconsin State Music Conference. Currently, his 7th Grade Band is working with composer Brian Balmages and next year's 7th Grade

Band will commission composer Michael Sweeney. In 1992 Mr. Gleason was selected as the Wisconsin Governor’s Scholar to Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Mr. Gleason has performed professionally at Disneyland, Valleyfair, and the Mall of America. He has been guest conductor of numerous camps and festivals including the National Band Association –Wisconsin Chapter Junior High All-State Band, Tri-State Honors Band, UW-Milwaukee Honors Band and UW-Whitewater Band Camp. He has also served as the Tuba/Euphonium Instructor for the Indianhead Arts Camp in Shell Lake, Wisconsin for many years. He is the chair of the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Committee and the chair of the Wisconsin State Middle Level Honors Band. He has taught CMP Workshops at VanderCook College of Music, the Los Angeles Unified School District in California, The Total Music Educators Workshop and numerous districts in Wisconsin. Mr. Gleason was the recent recipient of the Vi Miller Award for Excellence by the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission. Mr. Gleason is the founder and organizer of the Kalahari Band Festival in Wisconsin Dells. Mr. Gleason is a member of NBA, WMEA, and NAfME. RANDAL SWIGGUM Strings workshop presenter Randal Swiggum is in his fifteenth season as Artistic Director of the award-winning Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (Chicago), and serves as Associate Conductor for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, designing and conducting their extensive education and family series concerts attended by over ten thousand young people each season. He is also the conductor of Britten and Holst, the advanced choirs of the Madison Boychoir. He was Artistic Director of the Madison Children’s Choir from 1996-2000, and has also taught at Whitefish Bay High School, UW-Milwaukee, and Lawrence University, all in Wisconsin. A frequent guest conductor of orchestral and choral festivals, Randal recently conducted the Scottish National Youth Symphony in Glasgow, and All-State Orchestras in Georgia and Illinois, the Pennsylvania All-State Junior High Choir, the Singapore American School Choral Festival, MENC All-Northwest Honor Choir in

Portland, American Mennonite Schools Orchestra Festival, Northern Arizona Honors Orchestra, the APAC Orchestra Festival in Seoul, and both the Wisconsin Middle Level Honors Choir and Orchestra, as well as the Mansfield (PA) Choral Festival, New York City Interschool Choral Festival, St. John’s Boys’ Choir, and various festivals in Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania. Randal has served as education conductor of The Florida Orchestra, conducting twenty performances of his Beethoven Superhero education concerts last season. He and colleague Margaret Jenks co-conducted the 2010 ACDA Central Division Young Men's Honor Choir in Cincinnati. A passionate advocate for a richer learning experience in the rehearsal, Randy serves on the Wisconsin CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance) Project, now in its 36th year. He recently addressed the Pennsylvania MENC on "The Art of Rehearsing," as well as the Minnesota ACDA, Iowa ACDA, Illinois ACDA, Maryland MENC, the ACDA North Central Division and Eastern Division, the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, and MENC National Conventions in Phoenix and Kansas City. He often works with music teachers in workshops and in-services across the U.S. Randal has led concert tours throughout Europe, Canada, and the Americas including the first international tour for the Madison Children’s Choir to Brazil in 1998. The Elgin Youth Symphony recently returned from a ten-day Civil War tour of Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. combining concerts and in-depth study. He has music directed over thirty stage works including the 1991 premiere of the Theatre X opera, Liberace. He created the music for celebrated director Eric Simonsen’s new production of Moby Dick for the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, named by TIME magazine as one of the 10 Best Theatrical Productions of 2002. He is author of Strategies for Teaching High School Chorus (MENC 1998), and co-author of Shaping Sound Musicians (GIA 2003). Hong Kong weather Hong Kong weather is very changeable during the months of June through September. Between HKIS and hotels: HKIS will provide a bus each day to transport participants between the school and key locations. A bus schedule will accompany the information sheet sent to participants one week prior to the workshop.

Visa for entry into Hong Kong Most nationalities can get a tourist visa on arrival at the airport in Hong Kong. The Airport Express Train, to Central Airport Express Station, takes about 25 minutes. (Cost is HK$100 for a

“single” journey train fare, or HK$180 for “round trip” which is valid for 30 days from date of issue). If you are traveling with colleagues, you can purchase the tickets together for a discounted price.

There are a number of airport bus shuttles – please see the bus station for more details. The cost will be approx. HK$50 per person.

If you plan to take a taxi from the airport to your destination on Hong Kong island, please join the queue for the red taxis. Taxi fare to Hong Kong Island will cost between HK$250 – HK$350, depending on destination.

Departure from Hong Kong Hong Kong airport is very efficient but please allow 2 hours ahead of flight for check-in. Passengers for most flights can check-in at Central Airport Express Station or at the airport itself. Please check with your airline directly if you would like clarification for your specific carrier. Journey time to the airport depends on mode of transport. The Airport Express Train, from Central Airport Express Station, takes 25 minutes to reach the airport. (Cost is

HK$100 for a “single” journey train fare). You can check-in your luggage at the Central Airport Express Station up to 12 hours ahead. Additional information Money: Exchange rates – approximate: 1 US$ = HK$7.78 ATMs are located at the airport and all over the city. Bank of China ATMs accept Union Pay cards.

Getting around town: The Hong Kong subway is an excellent and efficient method of transport (or what the locals call “MTR station”).
