    A PANTHEON OFSERPENTS

Stories involving thenagas are still very mucha part of contemporarycultural traditions inpredominantly Hinduregions of Asia (India,Nepal, and the island ofBali). In India, nagas areconsidered nature spiritsand the protectorsof springs, wells andrivers. They bring rain,

and thus fertility, but arealso thought to bringdisasters such as oodsand drought.

Traditions about nagasare also very commonin all the Buddhistcountries of Asia. Inmany countries, thenaga concept hasbeen merged withlocal traditions of greatand wise serpents ordragons. In Tibet, thenaga was equated withthe klu, wits that dwellin lakes or undergroundstreams and guardtreasure. In China, thenaga was equated withthe lng or Chinesedragon.

into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpentgrew so big that he was able to surround the Earth and grasp his own tail, and as a result he earned thealternate name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent.Jrmungandrs arch enemy is the god Thor. AFRICAN SERPENT WORSHIP

In Africa the chief centre of serpent worship wasDahomey, but the cult of the python seems to havebeen of exotic origin, dating back to the rst quarter ofthe 17th century. At Whydah, the chief centre, there isa serpent temple , tenanted by some fty snakes. The

rainbow-god of the Ashanti was also conceived to havethe form of a snake. His messenger was said to be asmall variety of boa, but only certain individuals, not thewhole species, were sacred. In many parts of Africa theserpent is looked upon as the incarnation of deceasedrelatives . NATIVE AMERICANS

In America some of the Native American tribes givereverence to the rattlesnake as grandfather and king ofsnakes who is able to give fair winds or cause tempest.Among the Hopi of Arizona the serpent gures largelyin one of the dances. The rattlesnake was worshipedin the Natchez temple of the sun and the Aztec deityQuetzalcoatl was a feathered serpent-god. In manyMeso-American cultures, the serpent was regarded asa portal between two worlds . The tribes of Peru aresaid to have adored great snakes in the pre-Inca daysand in Chile the Mapuche made a serpent gure in theirdeluge beliefs.

    UNGRATEFUL KIDS

In Babylonian mythology, Tiamat is achaos monster, a primordial goddess othe ocean, mating with Abzu (the god o

resh water) to produce younger gods. It issuggested that there are two parts to theTiamat mythos, the frst in which Tiamatis creatrix, through a Sacred marriagebetween salt and resh water, peace ullycreating the cosmos through successivegenerations. In the second, Tiamat isconsidered the monstrous embodiment

of primordial chaos identifed with imageso a sea serpent or dragon. In the EnmaElish, the Babylonian epic o creation, she gives birth to the frst generation odeities; she later makes war upon themand is killed by the storm-god Marduk. Theheavens and the earth are formed fromher divided body.

    DAM DRAGON

In the early Vedic religion, Vritra , a serpentor dragon, was the personifcation odrought and enemy o Indra. He appearsas a dragon blocking the course o theRivers and is heroically slain by Indra.According to the Rig Veda, Vritra kept thewaters of the world captive until he waskilled by Indra, who destroyed all the ninety-nine ortresses o Vritra be ore liberatingthe imprisoned rivers. The combat begansoon a ter Indra was born, and he had

    GIVE ME SHELTER

Mucalinda is the name of a snake-likebeing who protected the Buddha fromthe elements after his enlightenment. Itis said that four weeks after Buddha beganmeditating under the Bodhi tree, theheavens darkened for seven days, and aprodigious rain descended. However, themighty king of serpents, Mucalinda, camefrom beneath the earth and protected withhis hood the one who is the source ofall protection. When the great storm hadcleared, the serpent king assumed hishuman form, bowed before the Buddha, and returned in joy to his palace.

    THE RAFT OF THE GODS

Sesha is the king of all nagas, and is saidto hold all the planets of the Universeon his hoods and to constantly sing theglories of Vishnu from all his mouths. Itis said that when Adishesha uncoils, timemoves forward and creation takes place. When he coils back, the universe ceasesto exist. Shesha is generally depicted witha massive form that oats coiled in space,or on the universal ocean, to form the bedon which Vishnu lies. Sometimes he isshown as ve-headed or seven-headed,but more commonly as a many thousand-headed serpent sometimes with eachhead wearing an ornate crown .

    ANOTHER TALE OFNWA

It is said that Nwaexisted in the beginningo the world. She eltlonely as there were noanimals so she beganthe creation o animalsand humans. On thefrst day she createdchickens. On the secondday she created dogs.On the third day shecreated sheep. On the

ourth day she createdpigs. On the f th dayshe created cows.On the sixth day shecreated horses. On theseventh day she begancreating men romyellow clay, sculptingeach one individually, yet a ter she had createdhundreds o fguresin this way she stillhad more to make buthad grown tired o thelaborious process.

So instead o handcra ting each fgure, she dipped a rope inclay and icked it soblobs o clay landedeverywhere; each othese blobs became a

common person. Nwastill laboriously cra tedsome people out o clay, who became nobles.

WE ALL FALL DOWNNwa is a serpent goddess in ancient Chinesemythology best known or creating mankind andrepairing the wall o heaven. The earliest literary roleseems to be the upkeep and maintenance o the Wall oHeaven, whose collapse would obliterate everything .There was a quarrel between two o the more power ulgods, and they decided to settle it with a fght. Whenthe water god, Gong Gong, saw that he was losing,he smashed his head against Mount Buzhou, a pillarholding up the sky. The pillar collapsed and caused thesky to tilt towards the northwest and the earth to shi tto the southeast. This caused great calamities, suchas unending fres, vast oods, and the appearance oferce man-eating beasts. Nwa cut o the legs o agiant tortoise and used them to supplant the fallenpillar, alleviating the situation and sealing the brokensky using stones o seven di erent colors, but she wasunable to ully correct the tilted sky. This explains thephenomenon that sun, moon, and stars move towardsthe northwest, and that rivers in China ow southeastinto the Pacifc Ocean.

    A STONY GAZE

In Greek mythology, the Gorgon wasa terrifying female creature. The namederives from the Greek word gorgs, whichmeans dreadful. While descriptions ofGorgons vary across Greek literature, theterm commonly refers to any of threesisters who had hair of living, venomoussnakes, and a horrifying visage that turnedthose who beheld it to stone. Traditionally, while two of the Gorgons were immortal,Stheno and Euryale, their sister Medusawas not, and was slain by the mythicaldemigod and hero Perseus.

    WEASEL YOUR WAY OUT

In European bestiaries and legends, a

basilisk is a legendary reptile reputedto be king of serpents and said to havethe power to cause death with a singleglance. According to the Naturalis Historiaof Pliny the Elder, the basilisk of Cyrene is asmall snake, being not more than twelve

ngers in length,[2] that is so venomousthat it leaves a wide trail of deadly venomin its wake, and its gaze is likewise lethal;its weakness is in the odour of the weasel, which, according to Pliny, was thrown intothe basilisks hole, recognizable becauseall the surrounding shrubs and grass hadbeen scorched by its presence.

    THE END OFQUETZALCOATL

Quetzalcoatls departurewas the work o his oldenemy, Tezcatlipoca, who wanted people tomake bloodier sacri cesthan the fowers, jade, and butterfies theygave to Quetzalcoatl.Tezcatlipoca trickedQuetzalcoatl by gettinghim drunk and thenholding up a mirror thatshowed Tezcatlipocascruel ace. Believing thathe was looking at hisown imper ect image,Quetzalcoatl threwhimsel onto a uneral

pyre. As his bodyburned, his heart wentup into the heavensto become Venus, themorning and eveningstar.

Another version othe myth says thatQuetzalcoatl sailedeast into the sea on ara t o serpents. ManyAztecs believed that hewould come back oneday. In the early 1500s,the Spanish conquerorHernn Corts tookadvantage o this belieby encouraging Aztecsto view him as thereturning hero-god.

    CHASING RAINBOWS

The Rainbow Serpent is a common motif in the artand mythology of Aboriginal Australia. It is namedfor the snake-like meandering of water across alandscape and the colour spectrum caused whensunlight strikes water at an appropriate angle relativeto the observer. The Rainbow Serpent is seen as theinhabitant of permanent waterholes and is in control oflifes most precious resource, oils and waters. He isthe sometimes unpredictable Rainbow Serpent, whovies with the ever-reliable Sun, that replenishes thestores of water, forming gullies and deep channels as he slithered across the landscape, allowing for thecollection and distribution of water.

    ETERNAL BATTLE

Veles , also known as Volos, is a major Slavic supernatural

force of earth, waters and the underworld, associatedwith dragons, cattle, magic, musicians, wealth andtrickery. He is the opponent of the Supreme thunder-god Perun, and the battle between two of themconstitutes one of the most important myths of Slavicmythology. He may have been imagined as (at leastpartially) serpentine, with horns (of a bull, ram or someother domesticated herbivore), and a long beard. Afterthe advent of Christianity, Veles was split into severaldifferent characters. As a god of the Underworld anddragons he, of course, became identi ed with the Devil. His more benevolent sides were transformed to severalChristian saints.
