We who work for justice and peace are called to espouse the ideal of becoming “contemplatives in action.”

—P. Francis Murphy

Reflection and celebration are indispensible parts of life. Anything that causes one to take time to reflect and celebrate is truly a gift. The tenth anniversary of the death of Bishop P. Francis Murphy was just such

an opportunity. It seems appropriate now offer our supporters the fruit of our reflecting upon the accom-plishments of the Murphy Initiative since its birth eight years ago.

We are enormously grateful for the resources that have given us the opportunity to do that. As Mem-bers, Benefactors and Friends of the Initiative you are present on every page of our story.

Bishop Frank Murphy’s death in 1999 left a void, not only in people’s hearts, but in the leadership work of justice and peace in the Church at Baltimore. Moved by the Spirit, as were the disciples after the death of Jesus, a new “twelve” gathered, and soon figured out how to move forward; hence the birth of the Murphy Initiative for Justice and Peace in 2002. However, birth is one thing, growing and becoming a viable entity is quite another.

In these pages we share with you our history and our growth into “becoming a common voice for justice and peace,” as well as an accounting of our stewardship.

We dedicate this report to all the generous and faith-ful friends of the P. Francis Murphy Justice and Peace Initiative who have accompanied us thus far on the journey.

Pace e bene,

Sister Diane Bardol, GNSH

Mission Statement

The Murphy Initiativeis envisioned as a common voice for its members.

Fourteen communities of religious, who make up its present membership, work collaboratively for social justice

and to support and supplementthe ongoing justice and peace work

within each of the communities.

To this end, the Murphy Initiativehas four goals which proceed

from a truly contemplativestance toward all of life:

1. Peacemaking both locally and globally

2. Justice in the Church

3. Intercultural relations

4. Education for peace and justice

Page 6: Murphy Initiative progress report

The Murphy Initiative for Justice and Peace is first and foremost a movement of solidarity rooted in contemplation. It takes its form and direction from the four goals:

1.Peacemaking2.Justice within the Church3.Intercultural relations4.Peace educationOur commitment to and our action

on behalf of justice and peace proceed from the conviction that this is a Gospel call that cannot be ignored. Believing in the Communion of Saints, we celebrate the beginning of each year with the

A Prayerful FoundationMemorial Mass for Bishop Frank Murphy lest we forget that his life’s stance and vision are what gave birth to the Initiative that carries his name.

Every meet-ing, conference, or other gather-ing begins with prayer, ritually contextualizing

the issue in order to facilitate theological reflection.

Circles of Contem-plation, co-sponsored with the Benedictine Sisters, and retreats at Jonah House are an-nual events that offer the gift of prayer, time and space to anyone who may yearn for this experience.

No one is excluded from Murphy Initiative gatherings. Indeed,

participants from all faith traditions are invited and welcomed. This inclusiv-

From a foundation of prayer, the members of the Murphy Initiative have moved to education and action, offering conferences and talks every year.

Two recent conferences on racism helped participants understand not only how discrimination hurts its victims but how those with “privilege” do not see the hurt. Presenters spoke eloquently and honestly, giving the pain of racism a human face. People who participated said they left with their eyes newly opened.

One outcome of the Murphy Initiative’s educational outreach is the production of a DVD and User Guide, “Becoming a Common Voice for Justice and Peace,” designed to help audiences from youth through adult better understand Catholic Social Teaching.

Lessons at a conference aren’t enough, however. Every year, Murphy Initiative members take part in events

Lessons learned,actions taken

to foster better intercultural relations, including the Memorial Mass for Dr. Martin Luther King, St. Francis Academy’s annual Peace Walk, and collaboration with the Outreach Service Center and Hispanic Center of Loyola University Maryland.

We also have taken the message of peace to the streets and to the halls of Congress. Our members have witnessed publicly for peace and justice at the monthly Peace Stand at the Pentagon with Jonah House and the D.C. Catholic Worker; we stood in solidarity supporting immigration reform; in

Page 9: Murphy Initiative progress report

Annapolis we testified against the death penalty; we joined interfaith peace rallies and Women in Black events, including the annual Peace Path as it stretches up Charles Street from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor each September 11th.

We have witnessed for justice in the Catholic Church as well. Representatives have met with the bishops of Baltimore, including Archbishop Edwin O’Brien, to establish positive relations and promote the values of inclusivity, acceptance and full and mutual participation of all members in the life of the Church.

In 2010, a concert by the Handel Choir gave the Murphy Initiative a spirit-filled finale to our year-long celebration of the tenth anniversary of the death of Bishop Frank Murphy. The concert was so well received that we are

looking forward to the second annual Handel Choir Concert. Mark your calendars now—the concert will be held January 30th, 2011, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church.

Since the Murphy Initiative’s inception, members have sought with every step to meet the goals of peacemaking, justice in the church, improved intercultural relations, and education for peace and justice.

So much more needs to be done. But with every prayer, every lesson, every action, we seek to bring the world one step closer to peace through working for justice.

With this report, we celebrate our coming together for justice and peace. We celebrate with gratitude our friends, supporters, and benefactors. We celebrate the gift from God to act as God’s peacemakers.

Through our work for justice, we seekto bring the world one step closer to peace.
