Progress Report: MakeMyTrip Carbon Footprint Initiative

November 2010 – September 2011

Soil-water conservation works in Pastureland Chokhala bara

The main objective of this project is to protect and rehabilitate community and individual

degraded land through plantation of trees for compensating carbon-dioxide emission

generated by air travel. Activities like fencing, soil-water conservation, direct seeding of

grass along with plantation helps in natural regeneration and protection of planted species.

Apart from environmental benefits, plantation will also be instrumental in strengthening

social cohesion amongst the local communities.

The tree plantation project was implemented in rural area of Udaipur and Rajsamand districts in southern Rajasthan which is primarily inhabited by tribal (68%) and other disadvantaged communities. The resources of communities are severely limited and contested. Most of the families are poor and depend upon agriculture and livestock for a large part of their livelihood. Nearly 73% of total area is common land which is too much degraded and contested.

Nearly 4,251 families were benefitted through the plantation supported by MakeMyTrip as

against the target of 2000 families.

Earlier Situation

Two kinds of sites were developed in the plantation project

1. Fresh sites which were encroached and heavily degraded, undulated, low in vegetation and open for grazing. The level of soil erosion was very high with no protection measure.

2. Sites where earlier soil and water conservation measures were taken up however subsequently due to lack of proper protection and management or the conflicts the vegetation cover was depleting.

The reason for earlier improper management of the sites was due to inter and/or intra

village conflicts. However, with continuous consultations and meetings, conflicts were

resolved.

The communities themselves submitted proposals for redeveloping these sites and also

contributed towards repairing the boundary walls. They ensured that this time around they

will manage and protect the sites. Villagers have appointed guards (Chokidar) for protection

at many sites. Village Committee and NRM Para-workers like Vanpal with zonal staff

regularly monitor the sites and hold meetings with villagers. Block forestry in-charge also

participates in village meetings to provide continuous feedback on protection &

management and organize trainings. In each village, villagers develop their own protection

and management system with the help of NGO Seva Mandir.

Current Situation

1. The sites are protected with a boundary wall. 2. Soil and water conservation along with protection helps in natural regeneration by

sprouting of old root stocks of trees and grasses. The moisture retention has improved on these sites.

3. The saplings were planted and seeding of grass and other indigenous plants species were completed.

4. Social cohesion amongst the villagers also got strengthen due to continuous meetings with villagers long before the start of plantation.

Harvesting of grasses from these protected sites would start in November 2011 after

discussion in their village meetings and will continue till Feb 2012.
