Principal’s Message Diary DatesDear families, carers and community,

Hello to everyone and a huge welcome to our new families. Welcome to our first newsletter of the year. My name is Belinda Kopania and I am in the very privileged position of Principal of Munno Para Primary School. I have taught at the school from Reception to Year 7 and have worked in various roles across the school, before I won the position. Many ex-students will know me as ‘Ms K’.

My Leadership Team consists of Amanda Smith as Assistant Principal. She works 0.5 in M1 with the Reception/Year 1 students and 0.5 in the front office. Amanda’s foci are Early Years, enrolments and Literacy. Pauline Huckstepp is Assistant Principal and works full time in the office. Administration in the front office includes Clare Macdonald our Business Manager. German

Schools are often asked why teach a second language. At Munno Para PS we are lucky enough to have German taught across the school.

Learning a language = Advantages PLUS

Employers may prefer YOU because YOU will:• have a global understanding and knowledge of the role of digital, media and information literacy today• have the capacity to problem solve with different world views• have the ability to work in culturally diverse teams• be able to communicate with a range of culturally diverse people• be flexible• know when and how to take the initiative• make valuable contributions as a global citizen.Learning a language = Potential PLUS

Why should YOU learn a language? Did you know that 94% of the world’s population speak a language other than English? This equates to 6.15 billion people. Learning another language offers you many benefits. These include:

• SCHOOL Learning another language improves your overall literacy and cognitive abilities. The skills you gain and use for studying another language are transferable across all learning areas.

• WORK Knowing another language gives you the competitive edge in today’s global job market.

• SOCIAL Learning another language helps you to communicate more effectively and relate to others, self manage and have the confidence to have a go without the fear of making mistakes.

• WORLD VIEW Learning another language enables you to view the world from a broader perspective as you understand and value your own culture and the cultures of other people here and overseas.

How can learning a second language help English literacy? There is a lot of evidence to suggest that learning a second language can enhance English literacy.

Some of the ways are listed below:

By comparing features of their first language with those of another language learners are better able to understand the structure and workings of English.

Language learners develop and enhance their skills and strategies for decoding and making meaning from words and this transfers to English.

Learners develop flexibility and competence in dealing with language concepts.

A second language can provide a new beginning and success for learners who have struggled with English. This has been shown to be beneficial, both in terms of English language development and for the self-esteem of learners.

Although we have had no additional funding to support the STEM work which other sites have received, we acknowledge the importance of both Science and Technologies for our students to be successful global citizens of the world. The library is still open at lunch and recess and is open for borrowing.

School Fees

Materials and services fees for 2019 are $241. If you believe you are entitled to School Card, a form needs to be completed and sent in to Centrelink. These are available from the front office and Clare Macdonald can help you with this. Clare can also help you with a payment plan to assist with regular payments for the school fees. Please make a time to talk with her if required.

Years 5 -7 Swimming Program

Year 5-7 Swimming Program will be held this term in Week 10 (1/4/19-5/4/19) at Starplex Swimming Centre. More information will be sent home to families in the near future.

Governing Council

Governing Councils have an important role to play in schools. Governing Councils set the broad direction of the school (in conjunction with the site leader). They provide community voice and input to help support improved student learning. Governing Councils also develop broad directional policy that facilitate the achievement of the school’s vision and broad direction. They also initiate and approve recommendations and strategies, which must conform to government policy, industrial agreements, DfE policy and direction and the site’s decision making structures.

Governance in schools and preschools is the responsibility of the Governing Council whose role is directed by the constitution and code of practice.

In this model of governance:

• The cooperative role of governing council and school staff is emphasised.

• Management and governance are clearly separated.

• The focus is on improving student learning outcomes.

• The broad directions are set and monitored by the governing council.

• The site leader and staff are responsible for reporting.

• Joint areas of accountability are minimised.

Governing Council meetings are held twice a term. If you are interested in being a member of our Governing Council, please see Mr Hunter and Ms Kopania.

Attendance

It is compulsory for all enrolled students to attend school. Parents and caregivers are to notify the school in the event of any absences. Please ring the school or message the attendance number which is 0416 906 257.

‘Non-attendance and irregular attendance can be viewed as early indicators of the potential for disengagement from the education program.

There is a strong correlation between under-achievement in primary school and non-attendance. Absence from school can limit a student’s

achievement of essential knowledge and skills required for effective participation.’ DECD Attendance Policy.

‘Absenteeism due to illness must be monitored. It is reasonable for a principal to ask for medical evidence of cause for absence for a student

who has been absent due to reported illness for three or more consecutive days.’ DECD Attendance Requirements.

If attendance is an issue due to distance, please discuss this with Leadership and the school can look at your local school and assist with any transfers.

Facebook and Class Dojo

The school has a Facebook page and Class Dojo, which provides regular updates for all. There is a school webpage with a lot more current information. Your child’s class teacher can provide log on details for Class Dojo. This is a quick and easy way of passing on messages and also receiving messages form the school and class.

Choir

Choir will begin in Week 3. Students will have weekly rehearsals as well as some lunch time rehearsals. Attendance is compulsory along with trying their best and presenting themselves at their best. Ms Kopania will be assisting with choir this year. She will have a Triple A checklist-Attendance,

Academic and Attitude. Students that do not attend rehearsals and/or do not listen and follow the school rules and/or do not try their best in class and at choir, will have to leave. There is a cost for choir, which covers the book, CD and shirt. Students need to obtain the book so they can learn all of the songs. The cost is $30 and is subsidised by the school.

There will be a cluster meeting on Thursday 7th March at Settlers Farm Primary School.

Invacuations and Evacuations

All schools have invacuation and evacuation procedures, in case of an emergency. An invacuation is when all external doors are locked, and no-one is allowed to be moving around the school. This could be because of an intruder on site, or if there is an angry student that is not following instructions.

An evacuation is when everyone is to move away from the buildings. Our evacuation area is the COLA. Due to a number of issues across schools, all schools have had to determine and off site evacuation area. Our area is the car park at the church.

School Zone 25kmh

Please remember to drive safely around the school. There is a 25km speed limit around the

school when students are present. The council and police will do spot checks around all schools at different times. People should not be parking across the road and having children crossing the road. Fines can be and have been issued by the council. The disabled parking is for permit holders only. Please ensure that you have your permit on display when using these car parks. There is parking at the church. Please remember that children do not always look where they are going and as adults, we need to be their eyes and ears at these times.

School Banking

All students at Munno Para PS can participate in the Commonwealth Banking program. Banking forms can be obtained from the front office. School banking is a good way to develop skills in financial management and saving. Banking day will be Monday and will begin in Week 3. All bank books need to be presented to the class teacher, who will send them to the front office in their banking bags. This ensures that bank books are returned to the correct classes. Prizes are given to students when they reach different token levels.

School Banking Day is Monday

Page 5: Munno Para NEWSLETTER ISSUE 1...NEWSLETTER ISSUE 1 Term 1, Week 3 2019 “We all can dance when we find music we love.” - Giles Andreae Principal’s Message Diary Dates Dear families,

Canteen

The canteen is open at lunchtimes from Tuesdays through to Fridays. Summer menus have been sent home, and a copy is on the Facebook page. If you require an extra copy, please let your child’s teacher know and we can send one home. Remember to put your child’s name and class on the front of all bags. Sandra Watherston is the Canteen Manager. The canteen is operated by Governing Council.

Before School

The school yard is not supervised until 8:45am and no-one should be onsite

until that time. Students, particularly those with no adult supervision, should be waiting near the front office until the music/siren has indicated the school is open. In the mornings, staff are preparing for the day with planning and organisation. It is not their responsibility to be supervising students who are unaccompanied and should not be on school grounds. Playgrounds are out of bounds for anyone before school.

After school

Munno Para PS finishes at 3pm. Students should be picked up promptly at that

time. Staff have meetings, phone calls, planning and preparation, marking and training after school. They should not be supervising students after 3:15pm. There are times when unexpected events occur. The school will put in mandatory reports to Families SA for repeated and constant late pick up as this is a lack of duty of care and neglect.

Late arrivals/early pick up

Most students do this very well, but just a reminder that late arrivals and early pickups, requires students to sign in at the front office. It can be distressing when a text message goes home to say your child is away and you know that you have dropped them off. Please remind students when they come in late to go directly to the front office to obtain a late slip.

Waiting for students at end of day

It is important that when waiting for students, that parents and carers need to wait outside of the buildings. Staff are often still working with students when families arrive. When parents/carers come in to classes to give messages, get school bags and generally chat with students, this disrupts the learning for all. When teachers are dismissing students, corridors get very busy. This is why classes are generally dismissed via their outside doors.

This is a WH&S issue for all and thank you for your support and consideration.

Grievance Procedures

When dealing with people, there will always be times when people do not agree. At Munno Para PS we will always follow up with issues, but we can only do this if we know there is a problem. All students are encouraged to report issues to a teacher.

PROCESS FOR RAISING CONCERNS

Step 1.

In the first instance make an appointment to talk to the person who knows about the situation. It is not always possible to drop everything and to meet there and then. Staff are very busy with meetings, training and planning. They will organise a time as quickly as they can, but this may not be straight away.

The person who knows may be: • The classroom teacher • The yard duty teacher • Leadership

It will always help the situation if you are calm and honest.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES:

Should a parent approach or address a child other than their own within the school yard or immediate vicinity regarding a concern or complaint. The matter must be raised with a staff member or the people mentioned previously.

All staff have the right to a safe work environment. There is a zero tolerance to abuse of staff. Department for Education has a number of options to address inappropriate behaviour of parents on our sites. These include the possibility of restricting attendance, seeking to banned or barred under the Education Regulations 1997 or seeking a restraining order under section 99 of the Summary Procedure Act 1921. None of the above steps would be taken lightly, as we are committed to developing productive partnerships with parents to develop a safe and caring environment for children.

However, if the behaviour continues to cause anxiety, or if staff or students continue to feel threatened or intimidated, then we will be forced to consider action as stated above.

Step 2.

If together you are not able to sort out the problems, let the person know that you intend to speak to someone else. Arrange a time to speak to Leadership, providing information which will enable the meeting to be as useful as possible.

This meeting may include the following action:

• The situation is monitored

• Further discussions with the people involved is undertaken

• Support for the child within the school is offered

• Outside support for the child, school or family may be sought.

Most concerns are now usually resolved, so if the school does not receive further communication it is reasonable to consider the issue has been resolved. If after following steps 1 & 2, the problem is not resolved, you may want to contact the Education Complaint Unit on 1800 677 435.

My Holidays Me and my whole family went to Hindmarsh Island and I made lots if new friends. Also we had a neighbor who had a pet bird.

My cousin and I went to Intensity and we won lots of tickets in the games.

My nanna and I went to Moorook to look at some caravan parks near the lake but I and Dakota went in the Lake at Moorook. On the same day we went to Intensity, we went to San Chirros and I got chirros, chocolate sauce and sprinkles. It was so good.

Me, Felicity, Ava, Amelia and Paige went to the beach and I caught some big waves with Felicity and Ava.

I went to Mia’s Birthday party and we went on the slip and slide and I went face first.

One thing I didn’t like was going fishing because I didn’t catch anything.

My holiday overall was amazing and I really enjoyed it.

My holiday was great because I got to spend time with my family.
