'Raees': An immersive SRK entertainer"Raees" is a typical Bollywood blockbuster designed like filmsof the early 1980s, with over-the-top yet thrilling action, dramaand a tinge of romance. It is a biography of a disciplinedbusinessman, albeit with ragged edges. Set in the late 80s andearly 90s and inspired from true events, Raees is afictionalised story of the rise and fall of a bootlegger-turned-gangster,in the alcohol prohibited state of Gujarat.Told entirely from within the closed underbelly of Fatehpur inGujarat, the script attributed to four writers does a brilliantconjuring act of inviting us into the life of Raees (Shah RukhKhan) who at a very early stage in life is inspired by hismother, a ragpicker who quotes, "Koi dhanda chota ya badanahin hota hai, aur koi dharam dhanda se badkar nahin hai."which literally means, no occupation is small and no religion isbigger than one's business. So with this as his mantra andphilosophy he sets out in the world on his own terms. He star ts off small by working for Jairaj Seth (Atul Kulkarni)who indulges in branded liquor. Jairaj appoints "Raees" be-cause he has, "baniya ka dimaag aur miyabhai ka daring,"which means he is shrewd like a shopkeeper and daring like aMuslim. How Raees gradually grows into a formidable figure insociety, forms the crux of the tale. With complex scenes, the plot offers nothing that you have notseen before. Narrated in a linear manner, the script is taut andthe narrative moves at a rapid pace. The first half is promisingand the second half which begins with Inspector Majumdar'spoint of view holds your attention with equal gusto, but unfor tu-nately, the climax tilts into a predictable zone of bad thingshappen to bad people, making the film a cliched fare. The film

is largely elevated by Shah Rukh Khan's per formance and a fewdramatic dialogues that are used to churn the emotions.Shah Rukh essays the eponymous character with sincerity andaplomb. He emerges as a sympathetic and even admirablecharacter and he does a very good job of por traying a brutalcharacter albeit with soft tones in equal measure. NawazuddinSiddique as the incorruptible IPS officer, Jaideep Majumdar isequally competent. His cat-and-mouse chase with Raees, punctuated with vibrant dialogues often elicit a chuckle.Together they keep you hooked.Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub as Sadiq - Raees' friend and par tnerin crime - is effor tless and affable. Unfor tunately, though he hashis moments of onscreen glory, he does not rise from beingRaees' lackey. Mahira Khan as Raees's wife Mohsina is wastedin the film. Her character is per functorily included to add theromance angle and her onscreen chemistry with Shah Rukhlacks zing. The rest of the supporting cast are sincere. The actionsequences are well choreographed, brutally raw and a bit far-fetched,making the act unrealistic especially the long chase and fisticuffs withMuharram celebrations in the backdrop. The songs, "Dil ka patang, udi udi jaiyae," "Oh Zaleema," and"Laila Main Laila" are well choreographed and seamlesslymesh into the narrative. But the quick edits mar the viewingexperience. With excellent production values, the era is realisti-cally created. But there are cer tain scenes which are marred bythe director's inability to control his actors from taking "starliber ties". Evident among them are the few scenes where ShahRukh Khan is seen without his spectacles. Overall, "Raees" is awell made film that would appeal to the masses.

KAABIL: A MEDIOCRE REVENGE DRAMAAS SCRIPT LACKS CHUTZPAH

Loosely inspired from the 2013 Korean film "Broken", which was based on a novel written by the Japanesewriter Keigo Higashino, "Kaabil" is a morality tale wrapped in a fascinating revenge drama.Rohit Bhatnagar (Hrithik Roshan) is a blind dubbing ar tist, whose newly-wed wife, Supriya (Yami Gautam)a pianist, who is also blind, is raped by Amit Shellar (Rohit Roy), the younger brother of local MLA MadhavRao Shellar (Ronit Roy) and his friend Wasim, the son of a butcher. When the couple approach police tofile a complaint, they are rebuked and turned away. Disappointed they return home only to realise that theperpetrators of the crime, are emboldened to repeat the crime. Soon, Supriya takes the drastic step ofending her life. With no hope left for justice, Rohit considers vengeance, as his only recourse and so he throws an openchallenge to Inspector Amol Chaube (Narendra Jha) and his assistant that he would take revenge for hiswife's death by executing the perpetrators. He tells them that his ingeniously planned execution wouldneither be detected nor solved. In other words, he would commit a perfect crime. How he goes aboutkeeping his word, forms the crux of the narrative.A three-way game of cat and mouse chase ensues between Rohit, as he hunts the culprits, and the policehunting him. The drama and action that blurs the line between the victim and the perpetrators of crime, isexciting. But the script lacks the chutzpah of an engrossing, nail-biting thriller. With a blend of romanceand thrill designed to suit the Indian audience, the story adapted by Vijay Kumar Mishra, is engrossing. But unfortunately, the pace of the story telling is its undoing. Also, the tell-and-show technique used for theplot progression, robs the audience of its thrill factor. On the directorial front, the first hour focuses on the romance in a perfunctory manner and thus makes theinciting moment seem forced. From the very word go you are compelled to anticipate trouble from Amitand his friend Wasim. Also most of the hero's journey is dealt superficially. The complex issues aresmoothened with cinematic liber ties. The second hour can't sustain the initial energy, as the story focusbecomes diffused and an excessive flashbacks and time jumps cause some narrative confusion.

FUCALE AND MARTIN PROVIDEGOALTENDING FIREWORKS IN

2-1 K-WINGS WINBRAMPTON - Brampton Beast goaltender Zachary Fucale de-livered a stellar 30-save outing, but ultimately his KalamazooWings counterpar t Joel Mar tin was one goal better in an enter-taining, hard fought 2-1 road victory for the Wings on Fridaynight at the Powerade Centre.A significant amount of the tests that Mar tin, who stopped 33shots, and Fucale faced over the course of this 60-minute con-test were of the acrobatic and ten-bell variety. Both teams dis-played, at times, tremendous desperation in the attacking zone, firing shots from all angles to try and break down these twonetminders but to little avail.David Ling scored the lone goal for the Beast (20-14-2-2), whowill attempt to snap their three-game winless skid on Sundayat home against the Fort Wayne Komets. As for the Wings (17-18-1-3),this triumph improves their record in January to 5-1-1. FITNESS, FIELDING MAIN FOCUS FOR WESTINDIES TOUR: PAKISTAN COACHADELAID (IANS) Pakistan coach Micky Ar thur on Friday said fitness and fielding will be the mainpriority for the team's upcoming tour of the West Indies next month. He said the team worked reallyhard on their fielding but they are still lacking in some areas. "Believe it or not, we've workedextremely hard at our fielding. Me and my suppor t staff have been around for about seven months, and that's been a focus and priority -- fitness levels have improved dramatically in terms of our day-to-day repor ts," Ar thur was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. "But we're way behind the rest of the pack. Sofitness and fielding again is going to be total priority before we go to the West Indies (later in the year)," Arthur said. "We'llhave time to put in a camp after the PSL, and we'll put in a helluva lot of work in that regard because we're just not up tothe mark in those two areas," he added. After losing Thursday's fifth One-Day International (ODI) match by 57 runs, which consigned the tourists to a 1-4 Series defeat, Arthur found some encouragement and lauded batsmen for themaximum contribution for the cause. "With the ball, with the bat, we compete perfectly well. Results-wise, it has beendisappointing (Australia tour). We came here thinking we had a real chance, certainly in the Test matches," Arthur said."We're still a fledgling one-day side, there are some gaps in our one-day side that we need to work hard to fill. We'reranked eighth (on the ICC rankings) at the moment, and I think you could see the gap between eight and one (Australia),"he added. The coach also said. "At 370-odd, we've got to play out of our skin to get anywhere close. So Davey Warnerand our fielding has probably been the key difference between the teams."
