In addition to the events mentioned above last Wednesday evening saw our first ‘class meetings’ where parents & carers had the opportunity to meet teachers as a whole group, take away important organisational information pertaining to your child’s class and network with other parents in an informal setting. Being the first time we have operated within this format, we were extremely happy with parent & carer attendance rates and the feedback teachers and myself have since received has been overwhelmingly positive. Once again many thanks to our P&C who organised dinner for parents and students on the night. We really do have such an enthusiastic band of parents, who

despite leading very busy personal lives can find the time to tirelessly contribute for the good of our school and ultimately our students. Captains and Ministers inductionAs mentioned above, it was a very special day at our school last Thursday with the induction ceremony for our 2017 school captains, vice captains and ministers. Pia B, Tom C, Ava J, Cooper N, Sam F, Cael M, Jasmine D, Joel L and Ryan D were all officially inducted into their very important positions of responsibility and leadership. It was an honour for them and their parents to award them with their badges. Congratulations again to all of our student leaders and we look forward to them carrying out their roles with excellence right through until the bell rings on the last day of the 2017 school year. Many thanks to Miss Patterson for her meticulous organisation of the day.

Personalised Learning Plans (PLP’s) / Goal setting 2017As discussed at class meetings last week, this year all students in our school will be involved in the development of personalised learning plans. This involves the establishment of individual goals, with a high level of support, encouragement and input from parents / carers and class teachers. All students will have a minimum of two and maximum of three goals. One goal will have an academic focus whilst the second goal will have a social focus. Examples of academic goals may focus around development / improvement in any particular curriculum areas whilst examples of social goals could be based on friendships, behaviour or involvement in extra-curricular activities. These are just examples and of course there are many other topics which you may discuss with your child based on ‘academic’ and ‘social’. Your child/ren may have a third goal. This is optional and is of personal choice but should be linked to improvement and be able to be supported both at home and school. The meetings will be a three way process involving the student, parent / carer and teacher. They will be of maximum 15 minute duration and the complete focus will be on the development of these goals. The meetings will be held in the week commencing 20 March of this term and a follow up review meeting involving the student, parent / carer and teacher will be held at the end of Term 3 to evaluate student progress towards these goals.Extensive long term educational research clearly indicates that student growth is maximised by collective input and encouragement from school and home. Other important factors that enhance student learning outcomes are the establishment and monitoring of goals and providing effective, regular feedback. The process we are undertaking this year will address all of these crucial factors.Further information about booking a time will soon be available but the days for teacher / student / parent PLP meetings are:20 March – 1/2B, 5/6P. 21 March – 2/3M, 5/6B. 22 March – 1/2A. 23 March – 4/5L, 3/4C, KH.

PSSA cricketCongratulations to our girls team and Mr Lindsay for a fine victory over Kingscliff PS in the first round of the state wide knockout last week. As well as a fine on-field performance, the girls certainly looked the part in our new Mullumbimby Public School cricket shirts and ‘baggy blue’ caps. Today Ryan Diehm is in Sawtell trialling for selection in the PSSA North Coast boys team. We wish him well.

MHS ‘Step Up’Mullumbimby High School Year 7 2018 year advisor Adam Culbert visited our school last Thursday and spoke to our Year 6 students as they are about to undertake the process of transitioning to High School. This Thursday 9 March commencing at 5:30pm is a great opportunity for our Year 6 students and their parents / carers to visit MHS for a school tour, information session and informal chat with staff. We encourage all Year 6 students and their parents / carers to attend. A school tour is available on Saturday 11 March from 9:00am is also available if you cannot attend this Thursday.School Voluntary contributionsA note went home today (and is also on our website) about this. These funds are vital for the school to be able to provide the best possible resources for students. The cost is $45 per student. All families who have paid this by Friday 7 April will go into a draw for a $100 food voucher.P&C AGMAll existing and new members are welcome to our P&C AGM this Wednesday 8 March commencing at 6:00pm. Our current P&C are a very active, positive and hard working group of parents who strive to improve our school in a variety of ways.

Just in the past few months their fund raising efforts have enabled the purchase of several new items at our school. The Winter Fair held last year, Mothers and Fathers Day stalls and catering for various events such as the Variety Bash, Art Expo and discos have seen the school with three new table tennis tables, five shade marquees and the installation of football goal posts on our back oval. None of these would have been possible without the efforts and commitment of our P&C. Our monthly raffle at the Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club and further fund raising activities in 2017 will enable further improvements to our school. In addition to fundraising efforts such as those mentioned above, the P&C are also engaged in numerous other activities. One long term example has been the P&C working with me over a number of years in our combined efforts to see the drainage issue at the front of the school rectified. After four years of trying, Byron Shire Council completed the works during the last school holidays. I thank the current and past P&C executives for working alongside me to have this important task completed. If you have any questions, issues, enquiries or you want feedback on any aspect of your child’s schooling please ring to make a mutually convenient appointment time with your child’s teacher, one of our Assistant Principals (Mrs Haywood - KH, 1/2A, 1/2B, 2/3M, Miss Patterson – 3/4C, 4/5L, 5/6B, 5/6P) or myself.Have a great week! Ours girls lost the toss and were sent into bat against a strong side from the north. Excellent knocks from Macey D, Zara M, Alisa T and Ava J set a total of 4/99 for Kingscliff to chase. Kingscliff got off to a good start, however fantastic bowling by Alisa,May M, Macey, Zara, Ochre B, Lilly D and Ella B restricted Kingscliff to a total of 4/74, leaving our girls with a 25 run win and into the 2nd round. Thanks to all the girls for their consistent effort in training and trying to develop their cricket skills. I would also like to thank the parents for their awesome support and help in transporting the girls to the game, Rod M for scoring, Steve F for helping with the shade tents and the Kingscliff PS girls for their great sportsmanship.CheersMr Lindsay

There is a music program running at the school where Joanne Sloane, who runs Music For Kids, comes each Tuesday to teach children piano/keyboard and African Drumming. The drumming groups are all rhythm based and a great way for the children to learn to play as a team and learn timing and polyrhythms. The piano/keyboard lessons have a more thorough learning of music where the children learn to read music and are encouraged to create their own songs and to play by ear.The program has been running for the past 12 years and the students are supported to perform at the arts extravaganza and talent
