Mullumbimby PS school captains top of the state! It was a pleasure to be in the crowd at the University of NSW, Sydney last Friday when school captain Ashlee Gluyas was presented with her medal for achieving the highest individual score in the ICAS English competition. Considering this particular competition attracts over 1000 entries, it is indeed a mighty achievement! Today Jed Edwards, school captain, has attended the North Coast Sports Award in Yamba. Jed was recognised for his outstanding achievements in Rugby League, including the top honour of captaining NSW at the 2013 national titles. We are all very proud of both of you!Art ExpoWe look forward to seeing as many people as possible at school this Thursday from 5pm to 7pm for our second Art Expo. Every student will have a piece of work displayed and there will be several performance items for your enjoyment. There will be a full report and photos in next week’s newsletter.Planning for 2014The number and structure of classes within DEC schools is dependent on the whole school enrolment numbers. If your child/ren will no longer be attending our school in 2014, it is crucially important that I am aware of this information. If this is the case, I would appreciate you phoning me or in writing by no later than this Friday 6th December. This information is very important as we consider staffing and class structures for the new school year. Have a great week.RegardsDavid LeesPrincipal

Writing in the Learning CentresThe cloak of painBy Harriet Pervan Wind lashes across my faceSalt water stings my muddy eyes Twilight swallows the earthA cloak of darkness raps itself around meBirds screech, waves crash onto the cold, jagged rocksI turn my headBlinded by lightThe world flashed before meMy body meets with the cold groundThe wind picks up, my eyelids flutterI drift off into a world of painTerror surrounds me, flames rage and engulf me in their fumesGasping for air, tears roll down my cheeksGiving up, death carries me awayMy life is at an end.

The Statue of Liberty By Breock HealeGood morning. Today, I’m going to tell you a little bit about the Statue of Liberty, and some facts you may or may not know. The Statue of Liberty is a massive statue in New Yor.. Blah, blah, boring. No, I’m going to tell you about how it was made, and the inspirations that led up to that iconic statue that we all know about today. The inspiration for the statue of liberty came from French law professor and politician, Edward Rene de Laboulaye. The inspiration came from a comment he made in 1865, saying that “any monument raised to American independence would properly be a joint project of the French and American people.”He was basically saying, that anything to celebrate American independence would be made by both the French and the Americans. As you may already know by now,

the Statue of Liberty was given to America by the French people. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, a French architect designed the statue, and construction started in September 1875, 138 years ago this month.Construction finished and the statue was dedicated on October 28, 1885. It was a collaborative project from both the French and the American people, as proposed. The French financed the statue, and America built the pedestal. Today, the Statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic sights ever, attracting millions of tourists each year. Every time we think of New York, the Statue of Liberty just pops into our heads. So there, you now know how the Statue of Liberty came into existence, who worked on it, all the dates, and so on. I hope you learned something about the Statue of Liberty that you didn’t know before. Here are some pictures of the Statue of Liberty in construction, in between, and what it is like now. [slideshow] thank you.

The Dog Standing on Stanton Cliff By Abigail RhinehartI was a regular visitor to the beach. Every day, I would go and admire the waves. They looked so beautiful with their fluent, engulfing blue. Peasants are not allowed in the water. They say we’re dirty, and we’ll ruin the water for ‘clean’ people. My name is Henry Gibsy, and this is my story of the dog that changed my life.I was walking up the beach; the wind whipping my shoulder length blonde hair, the sand crunching beneath my tiny foot, the vibration coming to my tall, lanky figure.I admire the cliff. It is the one sight that allows me to feel free, to feel as if I wasn’t stuck under the command of those who are of wealth.Suddenly, I notice something. A dog, it certainly isn’t ordinary, but I can’t

quite put my finger on what isn’t ordinary about it.Then I realise: it has a red scarf. It is ripping in the wind, the colours and patterns making a beautiful hypnotic montage. It makes me feel free. The sight of the dog, just a dog, an animal that is controlled by a human, staring into the sky without a hint of caring. It makes me feel something strong, something that has never happened to me in my life before.I want to join it. I want to stand on those cliffs, wearing my symbol of freedom, and showing it to the world.Every day that I went to the beach, I would look to the cliffs. And there it was, every time, standing in the exact same position as the previous time. It gave me something to live for.One day, my master died. Nobody owned me anymore. I continued to go to the beach everyday. The dog was still there. Everyday. Then, the day came.I went to the bitch. There was no dog. I ran to the top to see what had happened. It was dead.It lay there lifeless, the grass giving way for the body of the dog. The scarf lay there, unmoving, still on it’s neck.I cried for an hour. This dog had given me something to live for. It was my signal of hope. It was a legacy: The beautiful, free dog standing on Stanton Cliff.I wrote books and stories about it. I wrote songs. I eventually became one of the most well known personalities of my day. I enjoyed fame, and the beautiful sparking ocean. But I never forgot the dog standing on Stanton Cliff; a superhero in my eyes. I handed this story on to hundreds of people. A whole new generation’s childhood story was the ‘Dog Standing on Stanton Cliff’.
