This is a 4WD road which was built to service the power lines. There are some staunch hill climbs (and wicked downhills!), so it helps to be reasonably fit for this trip. This route is predominantly ridden from Denniston (650m elevation) to Lyell (80m elevation). But it can also be ridden in the reverse direction (if you like hill climbing!). Another option is to ride the complete circuit from Westport, over Denniston to the Iron Bridge and back down State Highway 6 through the Buller Gorge. This can be done as a long day trip (110km) or an overnite trip. There is a camping area at Lyell, backpacker accomodation at Inangahua (13 km from the Iron Bridge) and both these options at Berlins Hotel (13 km from Inangahua). The Mackley road is reasonably easy to follow if you carry the 1:50,000 scale topo map sheet L29 with you. To get started from the Denniston Museum, follow the way point marker sequence 1-0 >> 1-5 >> 1-4 >> 2-3 >> 4-3. (NB There are no MTB track markers beyond marker 4-3). The road is well defined but there are some intersections where you need to ensure that you make the correct turn (to avoid heading off down dead end power line roads). These intersections are shown on the L29 Map Sheet. In low flow conditions, Stevensons and Mt William Stream crossings are rideable, while the Mackley river is less than waist deep. However, if it has been raining the previous day(s), or is threatening to rain, then postpone this trip for another time. (The Mackley River has a big catchment - do not attempt to cross this river if it is in flood). The Mackley road passes through private farm land at the Inangahua end. MTB riders must contact the Department of Conservation (Westport office) or the Buller Cycling Club website (www.cyclebuller.co.nz) to check the current access requirements before riding through this area. Currently the land owner allows cyclists to ride through the private farm land at the Inangahua end of the Mackley Road. MTB riders are reminded to treat this access with respect - ride only on the gravel road; leave all gates as you find them; do not disturb stock; do not litter. Remember, if you abuse it we may lose it. MTB - Denniston - Mackley Road Guide © www.cyclebuller.co.nz
