Overview

The unit of competency: MSAENV272B Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices

covers the outcomes required to effectively measure current resource use and carry out

improvements including those reducing negative environmental impacts of work practices. The

competency applies to operators or team members who are required to follow procedures to work

in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Elements

To achieve competency in this unit, the candidate must demonstrate their ability to:

1. Identify current resource use and environmental issues;

2. Comply with environmental regulations; and

3. Seek opportunities to improve environmental practices and resource efficiency.

Assessment tasks

The assessment tasks provided in this guide have been mapped to the unit of competency, as

shown under the heading ‘Assessment mapping’. However, it is the assessor’s responsibility to

ensure that the tasks meet the needs of the training program being delivered and the participants

being assessed. Parts that are not relevant may be deleted. Assessors may also wish to add site-

specific performance criteria to reflect local workplace conditions.

The assessment tasks must also be validated to ensure that they are both relevant to the

workplace and in compliance with the AQTF standards and training Package requirements.

Note that a formal assessment of competency will need to be carried out by a qualified assessor,

under the auspices of a registered training organisation. For more information about these

requirements, please consult the Training Package.

Activity 1: Identifying resources used at work

Choose a product that you manufacture at work, or a task you carry out that requires the use of

resources. Think about the types of resources involved and the raw materials that they come from.

Then fill in the table below. You can refer to the Learner guide for this unit to see a worked

example of this exercise. Add more rows if you need more space for your entries.

Product or task

Items or materials contained in the finished product (or task output)

Natural resources that the items or materials come from

Other consumable items used in the process

directly into the product or task. Also specify the unit of measurement you have used to quantify

each amount. Again, you can refer to the Learner guide to see a worked example of this exercise.

Add more rows if needed.

was not properly controlled. Describe the measures your company takes to manage the problem.

Activity 4: Protecting stormwater

there weren’t measures in place to stop it from happening. Describe the control measures your

company takes.

Activity 5: Managing waste

What are the ‘3 Rs’ of waste management? Write an answer beside each ‘R’ shown below. Then

name an item that you apply this principle to at work, and describe what you do with that item. If

you don’t already apply this practice, describe what you could do in the future.
