WHOOO NEWS The Scoop: What we are learning this week… Important Notes: November 5, 2012 Weekly Homework Reading Log: Please read at least 15 minutes every night. (Part of this time should be used on your child’s sight word ring). Make sure your child records their reading on their reading log. This will be checked at the end of the month. Please make sure that all homework is completed in pencil The first grade American Education Week (AEW) event will be on Wednesday, November 14th. Please plan to join your child in making a time capsule on that day. More information will be sent home in your child’s Monday folder (to be sent home on Wednesday). Our class book fair time is the same day, right after our time capsule activity. My email is [email protected] . Please turn in your box tops! Please email [email protected] in order to let the front office know if your child is going to be absent. Please dress your child in YELLOW on Friday, November 30 th for the Pawsome Character Pillar of Respect. As the weather gets colder, please send your child with a jacket. We go outside everyday for recess when it is not raining. Thursday, November 15 th is Lowes Island’s picture make-up day. We will read the poem Five Fat Turkeys and practice looking for familiar chunks to help us decode words. We will also start reading some Thanksgiving books, such as Thanksgiving Is… by Gail Gibbons and Arthur’s Thanksgiving by Marc Brown. In writing we will continue to practice using finger spaces and lowercase letters in words. Recommended Reading: Leaf Man In November… Arthur’s Thanksgivng Thanksgiving Is… Word Study: Please have your child complete their word study homework and turn it in on Friday. This week’s homework will be 2 nd quarter sight word work. Math Workbook: Please complete the Halloween math packet sent home in you child’s blue folder last week. Make sure your child’s name is on the packet. Turn this in on Friday. read Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney. In Math: This week we will continue our estimation and relative magnitude unit. We are working on making reasonable estimations. Every day we practice this skill with our Estimation Jar. We will also play Grab, Estimate, and Count and Estimation Jeopardy in order to get a better understanding of relative magnitude. In Content: This week we begin our unit on maps. Some key concepts of this unit are cardinal directions and the compass rose, map keys and titles, and map symbols (land, water, cities, and roads). We are working on a project, Me on the Map, that will help us understand these concepts. We will also
