Topics of the MonthELA- Students will read the story The Snowy Day to introduce a thematic unit on winter. They will work on making predictions and answer comprehension questions. Students will also create opinion writing pieces on the topic of what they would do if they were stuck in a snow globe. They will come up with reasons that support their opinion with the help of a graphic organizer. We will also practice sequencing with topics such as how to build a snowman, where students will first create an art piece of a snowman and then explain the steps they took to create it. Another writing piece we will work on is how to make hot chocolate to coincide with our positive behavior incentive for the month. Students will also work on winter vocabulary words and sorting them into syllables. Leveled winter readers will be used throughout the month as well as Fundations and Reading Street.

Math: Eureka: Group 1: Continue with word problems within 10Group 2: Continue with measurement: meters vs. centimeters. In addition to Eureka students will also explore winter word problems with basic operations, predict and graph daily temperatures, and take a tally of the class to see how many students have played in the snow. Science- This month we will continue on our investigation of seasons and take a closer look at winter, Students will distinguish among the various forms of precipitation we see in winter such as , rain , snow, sleet, and hail. We will also do a classroom experiment and see what happens when water freezes, as well as predict how long it takes a snowball to melt.. Social Studies- This month we will take a look at how winter affects your clothing choices, your job, what you eat, your recreational activities, and the plants around us. We will also talk about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and the important role he had. Towards the end of the month we will learn about another winter holiday , Chinese New Year. Students will enjoy making Chinese lanterns to display around the classroom.

Social Workers Corner● This week in group therapy students will be working ● on identifying their feelings and using calming techniques learned

last week.

● These include identifying when they are happy, sad, angry, upset, frustrated, or excited etc.

● At home, find chances to speak to your child about how they are feeling using specific feeling words:

“How are you feeling today?” “you seem frustrated/angry.”“I am so happy to hear that you had a good day!”

● The goal being to help students get a better understanding of how they feel, and to be able to express those feelings to others..

● If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
