Fall 2011 Sharing the impact of philanthropy at Mercersburg MERCERSBURG ACADEMY IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE A $5 million leadership gift from Mercersburg alumna and Board of Regents member Deborah Simon ’74, which will pave the way for creating a true hub for student life on campus. Plans for the Simon Student Center at Ford Hall will convert the existing lower level of Ford into a bright and open student center that will be fully equipped for a variety of activities. Simon’s generous gift is in honor of her parents, the late Mel and Bess Simon, and the courageous leap they took allowing her to leave home for Mercersburg. “Parents are incredibly brave to let their children move away for school at such a young age, as my parents did,” Simon shares. “They are giving up a great deal. I think one of the best ways I can thank my parents and all parents is by giving the kids a vibrant, safe place to call their own.” As part of Simon’s $5 million pledge, $1 million will be dedicated to a matching gift challenge for Mercersburg parents. Simon is confident that parents will make the most of her matching gift because, as she notes, “helping build this student center is a great way for them to show their appreciation for their children.” Simon is proud that her gift will benefit Mercersburg students so directly. “For me, it’s always about the kids,” Simon explains. $5 Million Student Center Gift Will Be Transformational for Mercersburg Students (continued on page 2)

Simon’s generous gift is in honor of her parents, the late Mel and

What’s NEW at MERCERsBURG

“It’s a wonderful thing for me to be able to do this

for the students, to give them a gift they will use

and enjoy every day.”

A true student center at Mercersburg is long

overdue. Students need an inviting, stimulating

place where everyone can meet and connect. The

new center will give students a space outside

their respective dorms and classrooms that

is truly theirs, where they develop the social,

interpersonal, and relational skills that will

prepare them for college and for life.

A new student center is a key initiative of the

Mercersburg Plan. The Simon Student Center has

been conceived and designed with the student,

the student experience, and the positive outcomes

for residential and academic life in mind. There,

students will have opportunities to connect with

other students and faculty, collaborate on projects,

and take part in formal and informal experiences

that are just as important as classroom time.

The Simon Student Center will be deliberately

constructed to include many different areas so

every student can find his or her own level of

comfort. New additions will include an open

lounge, spotlight performance areas, multimedia

theater, café, and outdoor patio with a fire pit. The

new plans will also move and expand the game

room, meeting rooms, school store, and other

spaces. “It has everything I would have wanted

when I was 16,” says Simon.

These exciting renovations, which are expected

to begin in 2012, will cost $13 million. Stacie Rice

Lissette ’85 and her husband Dylan, parents of

Max ’14 and Payton ’14, were the first parents to

step forward with a naming gift to the student

center—the Lissette Game Room. Many more

gifts are needed before the student center is a

reality, and there are numerous opportunities

to participate.

Class of 2011 Parents and students Reach Goal for PorchParents of the Class of 2011 contributed $400,000 to True Blue: The Mercersburg Annual

Fund in 2010-2011. In recognition of their generosity and an additional gift from a Class of 2011

parent, the porch of the soon-to-be-renovated Simon Student Center will be named the Class

of 2011 Porch in honor of their sons and daughters.

Students in the Class of 2011 made their own gifts toward the porch and toward the purchase

of Adirondack chairs and outdoor heaters for the space. Names of all class members will be

inscribed on a plaque on the porch, a lasting legacy for their class.

What’s NEW at MERCERsBURG

FiFty-nine years aFter Charles

Moore Jr. ’47 achieved glory at the

1952 summer Olympic Games,

he has chosen Mercersburg

academy as the new home for his gold and

silver medals. every gift made by alumni

demonstrates just how deep the bonds

between our students and our school run,

and that is especially true of Charlie’s

treasured Olympic medals.

“like it was for many people,

Mercersburg was a life-changing experience

for me,” says Moore. “i grew up there—

academically, socially, and athletically. that’s why

i’m so pleased to have this opportunity to recognize

the school.”

at the helsinki games, Moore won a gold medal

in the 400-meter hurdles with a world record time of

50.8 seconds and a silver medal as part of the 4x400

meter relay team. Moore is the first of Mercersburg’s

54 Olympians to make such an extraordinary gift of

his medals.

“the medals represent an enormous amount of work,”

says Moore, “but also achieving something you set your

mind to.”

Moore wasn’t sure how to divide two medals among his

nine children, and it was during a visit to the newly renovated nolde

Gymnasium during alumni Weekend in October 2010 that he decided

Mercersburg would be a fitting place for his medals to be displayed. “if

i can entrust my children as my father entrusted me to Mercersburg,”

he explains, “then certainly i can entrust my Olympic medals to

Mercersburg.”

indeed, Moore’s family has strong Mercersburg roots. Charlie

is the son of Charles “Crip” Moore ’22, who competed

for the U.s. track and field team at the 1924 summer

Olympic Games in Paris. Charlie’s brother, tom ’57,

is a Mercersburg alum as well. Keeping the family

tradition alive, four of Moore’s children—Charles

’67, David ’74, susan ’77, and Brian ’94—are part

of the Mercersburg community.

Moore calls his gift of medals “a tangible,

meaningful expression of gratitude” to the school

for putting him on a path toward the sterling

academic, athletic, and business accomplishments

that followed in his life.

after Mercersburg, Moore attended

Cornell University, where he earned

nCaa titles in the 220-yard hurdles and

the 440-yard dash. he graduated from

Cornell with a degree in engineering and

went to work for his family’s steel-forging

business. Over the course of his career, Moore

turned around a series of struggling companies

before returning to Cornell as athletic director from

1994 to 1999. he currently serves as executive director of the Committee

encouraging Corporate Philanthropy.

Mercersburg academy will be forever honored by Charlie Moore’s

generosity, and we know his medals will surely inspire current and future

generations of students to pursue Olympic greatness.

WHAT’S NEW AT MERCERSBURG

There is no doubT ThaT Mercersburg aluMni and

supporters carry memories of our school’s spirit and tradition with them

always. now, friends can enjoy two beautiful hardcover photo books

commissioned to capture the Mercersburg experience in vivid color.

Mercersburg: An Extraordinary Campus Tradition and Mercersburg:

An Extraordinary Athletic Tradition feature photographs of many of the

most significant experiences in the lives of our students and faculty.

They also include images of the campus, as well as archival photos

and school historical accounts.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer robin hood and acclaimed

author James crutchfield were selected in 2009 to produce the

books. Their team made nearly a dozen trips to Mercersburg over

a 12-month period.

hood believes the character and traditions of Mercersburg really

shine through in the books’ photographs, culled from tens of thousands

of images taken by him and his team. Though the photos of the gnarled

cherry tree outside the chapel changing through the seasons are his

personal favorites, he said that the obvious bond between coaches, faculty,

and students is what stood out most during many hours of shooting.

“i would watch these interactions on the sidelines of the football field

or in the drama department or in a classroom, and you could see that the

teachers and coaches didn’t just want their kids to do what was required;

they wanted them to be inspired,” hood shares.

it is a pleasure to be able to offer this stunning book set to all who care

about this special place. To purchase your own boxed set of these books

capturing unique Mercersburg experiences, please call 717-328-6146,

the Loyalty club’s efforts to raise funds

needed to restore Irvine Memorial chapel’s

holy grail window have been a resounding

success. a total of 120 donors—most of whom

are Loyalty club members, having celebrated their 50th class reunion—contributed

more than $81,000 to the campaign. (In fact, enough funds have been contributed so

that another window restoration project will be planned.)

a cherished part of Mercersburg history, the holy grail window depicts King

arthur and the Knights of the roundtable and includes a small image of headmaster

William Mann Irvine’s pet dog. restoration of the final three panels of the 32-square-

foot window will entail removing each panel from the stone, re-leading the window,

cleaning each piece of glass, and reinstalling the glass in a frame within the stone.

Donors who stepped forward to help preserve this window were honored at

reunion Weekend in June. a book of gratitude listing their names is also on

display in the chapel.

Alumni Rise to the (True Blue) ChallengeA Mercersburg educAtion teAches every

student to rise to the occasion, and that determination

came through loud and clear in our alumni community’s

enthusiastic response to the recent true blue challenge.

to encourage more alumni to help keep Mercersburg

extraordinary, an anonymous donor extended a creative

challenge to young alumni (classes that haven’t yet

celebrated their 20th reunion) and reunion class members

(this past year, “1s” and “6s”). every gift of any amount

pledged by someone from these groups between February

1 and May 31 was matched with an additional $150 gift

from our donor.

this generous challenge paved the way for 302 new

gifts from young alumni and 192 new gifts from alumni

celebrating class reunions. thank you to all of our true

blue Mercersburg alums and to our anonymous donor

for making the true blue challenge possible!
