CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

May I extend a warm welcome to you all.

Thank you for coming to see our latest production ‘Move On’ featuring the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim and the dance of Bob Fosse.

Stephen Sondheim has been at the forefront of musical theatre for more than 50 years, winning numerous awards, and has left a legacy to aspiring writers and performers by founding various charities

and academies. We are very proud to present our own tribute to the great man under the direction of David Baxter who has written the narrative and put together a range of musical pieces designed to explain Sondheim’s outlook on writing, and showcase a full range of his work in an ordered and informative way.

I am very grateful to our in-house production team, I thank our new Director, David Baxter, for his patience and enthusiasm, and who has also choreographed most of the dance; Musical Director Lee Tesdale; Stage manager, Maureen Quilter and team; and Tap Dance Choreographer Tracey Dean.

There are many others who deserve individual praise for their efforts in bringing this show together, but I would particularly like to extend my thanks to the cast, who have had to work harder than ever this show, the backstage and front of house teams, orchestra, committee members and patrons, and of course to you, our audience for your much valued support.

Enjoy the show!

STEPHEN SONDHEIM COMPOSER AND LYRICIST

Born in New York City, Sondheim was given piano lessons from an early age, showing a distinct aptitude for music, puzzles and mathematics. His parents divorced when he was only ten, and Stephen, an only child, was taken by his mother to live on a farm in Pennsylvania. The area had attracted a number of well-known personalities from the New York theatre world; a close neighbour was the playwright, lyricist and producer Oscar Hammerstein II, who had a son Stephen’s age. At the time, Hammerstein was inaugurating his historic collaboration with composer Richard Rodgers. When Sondheim was in his teens, Rodgers and Hammerstein were enjoying unprecedented success with the shows ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘South Pacific’. Stephen studied piano seriously through his school years, while Hammerstein tutored him in writing for the theatre. At age 25, Sondheim was hired to write lyrics for Leonard Bernstein’s music in the landmark musical ‘West Side Story’. He then won a second lyric-writing assignment for the Broadway musical ‘Gypsy’. The credit, ‘Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim’ finally appeared on Broadway for the first time in 1962. The show, ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’, was an unqualified success, and introduced the first of Sondheim’s tunes to become a show business standard, ‘Comedy Tonight.’

Sondheim made a historic breakthrough collaborating with Harold Prince on ‘Company’ in 1971, the show marked a sharp break with Broadway’s past, and established him as the most inventive and daring composer working in musical theatre. Sondheim’s

second collaboration with Prince as director, ‘Follies’, paid tribute to the song styles of Broadway’s past, while deploying them to ironic effect in a poignant commentary on the disappointment of middle age and the corrosive effects of nostalgia and self-delusion. While Sondheim’s admirers stood in awe of his accomplishments, his detractors claimed that his work was too bitter to win wide popularity, and his music too sophisticated for popular success. ‘A Little Night Music’, put these doubts to rest. Its elegant, waltz-based score and warm humour charmed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. He received Tony Awards for both of these shows. The following year, the winning composer thanked Sondheim, “for not writing a show this year.” ‘Sweeney Todd’ (1979), was Sondheim’s most complex score yet. It marked the climax of a long collaboration with Harold Prince. ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ (1981), was the last of their shows together.

One of Sondheim’s most disturbing productions was ‘Assassins’ (1990), an examination of the motives and delusions of the men who murdered American presidents. As the Broadway theatre has turned to more predictable fare, Sondheim and his collaborators have sought out new venues for his increasingly daring work.

Stephen Sondheim’s 75th birthday was celebrated with all-star tribute concerts in New York, London and Los Angeles. In 2008, he was presented with a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. Over the last 50 years, Sondheim has set an unsurpassed standard of brilliance and artistic integrity in the musical theatre. His music, steeped in the history of the American stage, is also deeply informed by the classical tradition and the advances of modern concert music. His words, unequalled in their wit and virtuosity, have recorded a lifetime of profound, unblinking insight into the joys and sorrows of life and love.

Bob Fosse was born on June 23rd, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He was born into theatre and was touring his own dance show by age 13 called ‘The Riff Brothers’. Fosse grew up amidst the Cabaret nightclubs and was exposed to this type of performance in his early years. At age 15 he choreographed his first Cabaret number where the dancers wore Ostrich feathers as a costume. This kind of sexually suggestive nature later became a huge part of his signature style.

After taking years of acting classes, Fosse went on to perform on Broadway. His first part was in ‘Call me Mister’ (1948). After spending time in the Broadway chorus, he later got a bigger part in ‘Dance me a Song’. Fosse also had dreams of making it big in Hollywood; he travelled and landed a few film rolls including a dancing role in ‘Kiss me Kate’.

His first big break was the choreography of ‘The Pajama Game’ in 1954. He also received acclaim for his staging of ‘Steam Heat’, which became quite a hit. After dipping his feet in the Hollywood scene Bob headed back for Broadway and ended up making it big. Fosse began getting more and more work and slowly but surely started building himself a name on the Broadway circuit.

Fosse’s style really highlighted isolated movement. He’d take a group of dancers and sometimes would have only a finger or an eyebrow moving at a time. He was very simplistic yet powerful in his staging and movement. He’d have the dancers move very slowly at times, and would linger on movement. In any Fosse number, you’re sure to find cigarettes,

net stockings and a tipped hat. He used a cool, jazz sensibility in his choreography, yet it was Burlesque in nature and sleek by choice with pelvic movement and heavy leans. Fosse ended up pairing with a dancer by the name of Gwen Verdon who had the main dancing role in ‘Damn Yankees’. This role was infamous for the number ‘Whatever Lola Wants, Lola gets’. He began casting her in many leading roles such as ‘Redhead’ and ‘New Girl in Town’. This duo ended up getting married in 1960.

Fosse was directing and choreography many shows by this time from ‘Sweet Charity’ and ‘Dancin’ to ‘Chicago’ and ‘Cabaret’. He was also soaring in film as well with many of his Broadway hits that were set for TV. He had his share of disasters as well but succeeded them. One of which was his divorce to Gwen Verdon. This happened right after his heart attack while working on his production of ‘Chicago’. Gwen had the leading role, they continued to work professionally after their marriage dissolved.

Fosse died on September 23rd, 1987 at the age of 60. This was just moments before the curtain rose for his rendition of ‘Sweet Charity’. He died doing what he loved; smoking and dancing! His life was later portrayed in the biographical movie ‘All That Jazz’. It showed his reckless way of living as well as the creative endeavours, which made his name so big today. His legend continues to live on and we see his style in many works of today. In 2002, his choreography for ‘Chicago’ graced the silver screen in an adaptation by Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones. His hits were also recreated for the long running show ‘Fosse’ on Broadway.

Fosse’s legend is one that will never die. His influence on the dance community is without question, one of the most withstanding.

THE BAND

DAVID BAXTER DIRECTOR

David first got excited about theatre when he saw his sister Emily at the Bristol Hippodrome. He then was inspired

to take up all dance disciplines, but found that he excelled mainly in classical ballet.

David was offered a place at the Royal Ballet School at which he attended for five years before later moving to Arts Educational School in Tring to study the dance style of, amongst others, Bob Fosse. In this time David gained experience within all areas of theatre, including directing.

David has found it a great honour to be able to direct a show focussing on the works of Stephen Sondheim and Bob Fosse. He says “It has been a great experience collating and creating this show for Keynsham Light Opera Group, and I would like to wish all the cast the best of luck for this, and future shows”.

David would like to dedicate ‘Move On’ to Brian Buttle, who not only did so much for amateur dramatics in the South West, but also shared David’s passion for all things Sondheim. We miss you.

LEE TESDALE MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Lee discovered his passion for music at an early age, but it wasn’t until he was seven years old that he actually started

taking piano lessons. From this moment on, he has never missed an opportunity to perform.

When Lee went to secondary school, he started playing for all kinds of different groups but it wasn’t until he played for his first school production of ‘My Fair Lady’ that he discovered his love of musical theatre.

At the age of fifteen, Lee played in the band for Keynsham Youth Theatre’s production of ‘Kiss Me Kate’, before going on to join Keynsham Light Opera Group as our rehearsal pianist for ‘The Bare Necessities of Disney’ in 2003. During his musical path, Lee has played for county orchestras and HTV’s production of ‘A Christmas Carol’. However Lee still wasn’t satisfied and it wasn’t until he was 21 that he was really able to grab the bull by the horns and take on the role of Musical Director in 2009 for ‘Half A Sixpence’.

Lee would like to wish the entire Cast and Production Team of ‘Move On’ the best of luck and every success with the show. Lee is very much looking forward to the new musical challenges that await him.

MAUREEN QUILTER STAGE MANAGER

Maureen first joined KLOG as a scenery painter in 1980 and learnt a great deal about scenery building and making do

with all sorts of scrap materials from Peter Dean who she says “was an amazing mentor”. After many brilliant shows with variousdifferent stage managers, Maureen felt brave enough to have a go herself and she has now thoroughly enjoyed the job for the last 9 years!

“There is never a dull moment backstage and if you’ve never tried it, then do. I have a great crew and am looking forward to the show week.”

PAT CLEVERDON WARDROBE MISTRESS

Pat joined Keynsham Light Opera Group many years ago, from Yeovil (not mentioning the year!) During the

show ‘Brigadoon’, Pat started helping with the costumes, and has been in charge of our Wardrobe and Costume department ever since.

Pat says that “every show has been a challenge” - we are all so very grateful for her massive contribution to the success of our productions over the years.

Outside of the group, Pat is also a member of a local choir and enjoys singing all types of music.
