HEADTEACHER’S WELCOME Welcome

On behalf of the staff and governors of Morriston it is my pleasure to extend you a very warm welcome to our 2017 Annual Presentation Evening. This evening is one of the most important events in our school calendar as it is an opportunity to celebrate the successes of our young people and appreciate the wide range of talents in our school.

I am very proud to be Headteacher of Morriston Comprehensive School, a school that strives to ensure that every child, of every ability and background is able to fulfil their potential and achieve the best they can.

Tonight’s event celebrates the success across all aspects of school life. It allows us to celebrate and recognise achievement and endeavour in outstanding academic success, sporting achievement, drama and culture through to charity and community work in our community, and ultimately show that Morriston students can achieve great things and are the equal of students anywhere in Wales.

We are delighted that our guest speaker this year is Mr Simon Pirotte, Principal and Chief Executive of Bridgend College. Bridgend College is the highest ranked FE College in the UK in the Times 100 Best Companies to work for 2017. Simon is an ex pupil of our school, and someone who is passionate about education and raising aspiration and ambition of all children in our community.

Morriston is a rapidly improving school that is providing high quality education for our students and as a result improving their life chances in an ever changing world that demands ever more qualified young people. I want to thank all our staff who truly go the extra mile to ensure your children achieve.

As parents and family I am sure you are very proud of your child’s achievements and I want to thank you for your continued support and attendance this evening. I am sure you will enjoy a memorable evening.

M.R. Franklin

The Awards

The Presentation Evening is the culmination of a series of achievements, starting with the awards of merit in the classroom, through to the presentation of certificates and trophies in House assemblies, special assemblies, sports assemblies, etc. This is in line with the school’s aim to create a positive learning environment where all children are rewarded for the effort they make.

Academic Excellence, Effort and Improvement

For Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 each Department nominates students for recognition. A pupil will receive a nomination because he/she has excelled in some way.

The most obvious is academic success, but this has to be related to the ability of the pupil. Each child chosen has also made a supreme effort and demonstrated considerable progress in the subject during the year. Pupils may be nominated by more than one Department. The pupil who receives the House Award has demonstrated a high level of success and made a significant contribution to the school throughout the year, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Page 14: Morriston Comprehensive School Presentation Evening€¦ · Geography helped her finish with an excellent A-Level grade. She demonstrates a true passion for the subject, through her

Caitlin Barrow & Bradley Bankhead; both pupils have shown outstanding skill and determination throughout their artistic studies. They’ve shown excellent development and continue to flourish as artists during their AS Studies. The Ian Thompson Award for Outstanding Sporting Achievement Hannah Thomas Hannah will be the first female recipient of the Ian Thompson Award for sporting excellence and knowing Ian’s love of football, I know that he will be overjoyed with our decision to give it to a footballer with such a bright future in the game.

If you’ve met Hannah you will know that she is simply one of the most modest and unassuming of people, but this belies a tremendous athlete who is competing at the highest standard. In an era of bravado and ego driven sportsmen and women Hannah is the antidote. She made her debut for Swansea Ladies at 16 and promptly won an achievement award. She contributed in no small way to Swansea winning the Welsh Premier League. This in turn led to Champions League matches in Romania. Hannah is currently training with Wales U18 and knowing her she will be involved without doubt.

Hannah contributes to the development of school football. The growing interest of our girls to play football is exceptionally pleasing and Hannah is a tremendous role model for our younger players. Not only this, but she gives of her own time to coach the girls and share her experience and knowledge.

Hannah is also a diligent and modest student who positively contributes to the 6th form and school life in general. Despite her sporting excellence, it would be hard to find a more down to earth and worthy young lady. We are very proud of Hannah and wish her every success in the future!

The Sian Newington Award for Outstanding Sporting Achievement Holly Jones Holly has achieved a level of sporting excellence that is awe inspiring. Her commitment to gymnastics has led to incredible success in a sport that is simply one of the most difficult to access on the planet.

Page 15: Morriston Comprehensive School Presentation Evening€¦ · Geography helped her finish with an excellent A-Level grade. She demonstrates a true passion for the subject, through her

In 2016 she competed for the UK Schools team competition and contributed to a team 1st place, by coming 3rd in the vault. This was followed up by success in Namibia at the junior Commonwealth Games. Holly came first in the individual vault and floor competitions securing a team 1st for Wales. Towards the end of the year Holly was invited to train with the senior Commonwealth Games team and spent two weeks in Brisbane on a training camp in preparation to break into the senior echelons of the sport.

This she duly achieved at the British Senior Championships, she recorded an individual second place in the vault. She is in the process of trial and selection to represent Wales at the senior Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland, April 2018.

It may not surprise you that Holly did ok in her GCSE Physical Education. However, the real measure of Holly is that despite her level of stratospheric sporting success, she remains an incredibly grounded, diligent and hard-working pupil of whom we are exceptionally proud. She hasn’t had it easy on her journey, but her stoicism and determination have helped overcome numerous serious injuries. Knowing Holly, I think we can count on the fact that we will be able to say that when she competes at the next Olympics that we were privileged to know her. The future is bright and we wish her every success.

The Department Award for ICT Jay Friswell Jay followed his A Grade in GCSE Computer Science with an A Grade in AS Computer Science. Jay has been a First LEGO League team member and now acts as a coach to a team of younger pupils. Kala Patthar Award Ekow Abankwa Ekow has been a committed member of the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme. He successfully completed his Bronze award in July 2017. Ekow has demonstrated all of the attributes the award seeks to recognize, commitment, team work and selflessness. He has been a pleasure to take through the award.

The Department Award for Media Studies Emily Rees-Jones - Emily is an excellent student who has applied her efforts, to a highly academic standard, throughout the course. At AS she was an exemplary student, consistently impressing both Mr Horton and myself, with her highly motivated attitude to all aspects of the course, from extensive research to the writing of eloquent A grade, discursive essays. This thorough and mature approach, combined with her determined, pro-active independent studies while 'reading around the topic', resulted in the only A grade for the demanding MS1 exam, in the class. Well done, Emily! Alex O'Leary - Alex has tackled the whole course with energy, enthusiasm and commitment. Her attendance and contribution to class work and discussions have been impeccable. Alex is very mature and she has impressed us with her thorough approach to her studies. Most deserving of praise, is her exemplary dedication to the completion of coursework. This is a largely practical unit and in this she has displayed originality, flair and high levels of technical skill acquisition. Her storyboard was original and so precisely accurate, that she received full marks. The resulting music video was generically 'spot-on', technically proficient and aesthetically very pleasing. The Clive Holly Memorial Award Joel Osborn Joel Osborn faces challenges every day, his difficulties have for much of his life prevented him from being included and taught alongside his peers. This year he has joined his peers for much of their lessons and this we celebrate. Joel will always face challenges but without a doubt his personality and determination to enjoy the same opportunities as his peers will be his inspiration. Joel Osborn you are an inspiration, well done!
