Morris Area Genealogy Society Newsletter
Vol 18 No 3 September 2005
Welcome to a new season!
We have a seat saved for you! ☺
It looks like there are plenty of exciting things in store for us! The year begins with a talk about German Research by our old friend, Tom Peters. Tom will deliver a slide lecture showing examples of home sources, government sources, and church records that will help researchers access the church and civil records of Europe. A few case studies will show how challenging research situations were brought to a successful conclusion. In October, the highly regarded Larry Fermi will be back to do a presentation on genealogy software programs. He will demonstrate some of the more popular programs and show how to use them. Larry previously spoke to us
about military records and Italian genealogy. In November, another of our favorites, Chad Leinaweaver will be telling us all there is to know about evaluating conflicting genealogical information – or at least as much of it as he can during the hour he is with us. Chad is the Director for the Library and Museum Collections for The New Jersey Historical Society in Newark. He has authored many articles including articles for The Computer Genealogist, New England Ancestors and Archival Anecdotes. See back page for dates and location of these events.

Indiana Civil War Veterans, Transcription

Indiana, Grand Army of the Republic, 1882-
1948, by Dennis Northcott, Northcott
Genealogical Publishing Co., Saint Louis,
Missouri, H977.2 NOR, 2005. This second
publication in the series is a welcomed
addition to the first publication titled, Grand
Army of the Republic, Department of
Illinois: Transcription of the Death Rolls,
1879-1947, which contained death records
of more than 32,000 members of the
Department of Illinois, who served in Civil
War units from thirty-six states. This new
publication is an alphabetical transcription
of the Department of Indiana death rolls and
was compiled from journals in the holdings
of the University of Illinois and the Library
of Congress. It contains records of more
than 22,000 soldiers, who served in Civil
War units from thirty-one states. The
records contained the soldier’s name, rank,
company, regiment or ship, age, date of
death, and the number of the post to which
he belonged. In transcribing these death
rolls, every effort was made record the
information accurately and completely. This
book also contains six appendices: a roster
of post names and locations, a roster of
annual encampment dates and locations,
roster of annual membership and the
national organization, members with
additional biographical information,
statistical summary of states from which
soldiers in this transcription served, and an
annotated bibliography of the Grand Army
of the Republic Department level rosters and
indices. Transcription of the death rolls of
the Grand Army of the Republic
Departments of Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas
will be forthcoming.

photographed by Douglas Keister, Gibbs-
Smith Publishing Company, Salt Lake City,
Utah, H929.5 KEI, 2004. This publication

was their favorite flower? This publication
Morris Area Genealogy Society - 5 - Vol 18 No 3, September 2005

architecture (mausoleums, chapels, offices,
tombs, sculptures and memorials), stone

by Linnea B. Foster
The following is a continuation of the abstract of Book G of Morris County Marriage Records. An explanation of these records may be found in Vol. 6 No. 3 (Sep.1993) and Vol. 17 No. 3 (Dec. 2004). The marriages have been abstracted in the order in which they were recorded. The name of the minister or official and the date recorded is shown for each group of marriages. The first column shows the page number in Book G; the second column shows the date of the marriages; the third column shows the names of the bride and groom and other information that appears in the original record.

Castle Garden Website
The Castle Garden Database is now online. If you have immigrants to New York before Ellis Island opened, this may help you. Although the search range is 1830-1912, Castle Garden records are 1855 to 1890. The total records include not only the Castle Garden period, but the period between the closing of Castle Garden and the opening of Ellis Island in 1892 when the Barge Office was processing records. Also included are some records from other ports. The new Castle Garden site is reportedly not yet complete: http://www.castlegarden.org/.
You can also access these records by using Steve Morse's site. There you have more search features and can also browse through the database of Castle Garden Passenger Records: http://www.stevemorse.org/ellis/cg.html.
Early Churches of Morris County This issue begins a new series on the early churches in the Morris County area. We hope it will help you learn about where your ancestors worshiped and have a better understanding of their community. We begin this series with the church that has been home for our meetings for the past 6 years, Grace Church in Madison. Grace Episcopal Church, Madison
Mailing address: 4 Madison Ave, Madison, NJ 07940
Website: http://www.gracemadison.org/
Early Episcopalians in Madison attended St. Peter's Church
in Morristown; it was as an offshoot of that congregation
that Grace Church was eventually formed. The earliest
services were held in the late 1840s, sometimes at the
Madison Methodist Church. In 1854, a meeting was held to organize an Episcopal parish in
Madison. For the first two months of its life, it was known as Zion Church. Then the name of the
parish was changed to Grace Church and it was incorporated under that name. Services were held
at the Odd Fellows Hall until the church building was completed in 1856 at its present location.
There was land set aside for the use of Grace Church at Evergreen Cemetery in Morristown, but this
was disputed by the cemetery. The church and the cemetery eventually came to an agreement. It is
unknown whether any parishioners took advantage of their right to be buried there.

THE IRON ERA
The Iron Era, published in Dover, NJ, contains a wealth of information about residents of Dover and the surrounding areas in Morris County. The Morristown-Morris Township Library has microfilmed copies of the issues published from January 20, 1872 through December 10, 1905. Unfortunately, there is no index. However, toward the end of each year from 1881 through 1892, a synopsis of the year’s events was published in the newspaper. The Library’s collection includes a transcript of the synopses, Morris County History 1881-1892 [HM1/Dove/Mor].
