Morris County Marriages

by Linnea B. Foster

The following is a continuation of the abstract of Book G of Morris County Marriage Records. An explanation of these records may be found in Vol. 6 No. 3 (Sep. 1993) and Vol. 17 No. 3 (Dec. 2004). The marriages have been abstracted in the order in which they were recorded. The name of the minister or official and the date recorded is shown for each group of marriages. The first column shows the page number in Book G; the second column shows the date of the marriages; the third column shows the names of the bride and groom and other information that appears in the original record.

IN HONOR OF OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY by Linnea B. Foster

MAGS will celebrate its 20th Anniversary at the April 1st meeting. During the five years since we celebrated our 15th Anniversary much remains the same, but there have been some changes, both to keep up with new developments in genealogy and to pay attention to members’ interests. Our regular monthly meetings, open to all who are interested, continue to feature a speaker on some aspect of genealogy. A Winter Workshop at a regular meeting gives members and guests an opportunity to discuss their specific interests in small groups. In January 2006, the Morris County Library became our meeting place, and the day was changed to the first Tuesday of the month, September through May. The tradition, begun in 1999, of a Genealogy Day sponsored in conjunction with the Morristown-Morris Township Library and with support from the Salmon Family Fund, continued with Genealogy Days in 2004 and 2006. While some features in the Newsletter are unchanged, photos have been added by the editor, Ruth Daniels, who is in her ninth year of producing the quarterly publication. Members interested in German research formed a Special Interest Group to help each other, and soon welcomed those with questions about Eastern European ancestry to their meetings. The idea of Special Interest Groups grew. Computer Genealogy and Family History Writing and also Beginners groups were formed. Recently the Beginners group became Beginners and Beyond, to include members with more experience who want to find help with research problems. Several years ago, a MAGS website, Rootsweb.com/~njmags/, was created, with Anna Nagy serving as webmaster. It includes general information about the Society and meetings and also features some Morris County records and links to other Morris County and New Jersey sites. Indices produced by the MAGS Indexing Group, which continues to meet each month, are added to the website as they are completed. When celebrating anniversaries, reviewing recent happenings is important, but a look further back also is in order. The organizational meeting of the Morris Area Genealogical Society, attended by over 60 enthusiastic genealogists, took place on Tuesday, February 23, 1988. By June of 1988 the Charter Membership totaled over 150. MAGS had its beginnings when Diane Solomon, then head of the Local History and Genealogy Department of the Morristown-Morris Twp. Library, became aware that patrons were interested in the formation of a genealogical society. In the fall of 1984, Melda Shippey and Linnea Foster were asked to meet with members of the Genealogical Society of the West-Fields. The Westfield members were generous in sharing their experiences in starting their organization. Although interest in a Morris Area society was high at the time, the decision was made to wait until a meeting room

Morris Area Genealogy Society - 10 - Vol 21 No 1, March 2008

in the proposed addition to the Library was completed. Three years later in the fall of 1987, the Library sponsored a series of four programs about various aspects of genealogy. The response left no doubt that there was a desire for a genealogical society in the area. A Steering Committee, which guided the Society through its first months, met for the first time on January 18, 1988. Of the group, Diane Dellicker, Linnea Foster, and Judy Weinstein, are still members of MAGS. Over the years many members have contributed their time by serving on the Board, teaching segments of genealogy courses, providing refreshments, indexing material for the Library, contributing to the Newsletter and coordinating Special Interest Groups. The names would make too long a list to record here. However, the past Presidents, Linnea Foster, Diane Dellicker, Joan Armour, Barbara Davidson, Bogert Holly, Regina Springer, Roger Conover, Alan Zimmerman and Robert Stein should be mentioned. There have been changes during the twenty years of our Society, but what remains the same is the commitment of both talent and time by a significant number of members. If this continues, we can look forward to a bright future.

A Slice Through the Genealogical Forest

submitted by Jim Malcolm

Genealogists, like arborists, are concerned with trees. A person, often the genealogist interested in their heritage, is the root of the tree and the ancestors are the branches. Following the breadcrumbs of history to the farthest branch of the tree is the passion of the genealogist. I have a different genealogical problem -- I have a Civil War journal and, to better understand what is in the journal, I want to take a slice, one person thick out of a number of (family) trees. I would like to find out what I can about the author of the journal, Heyward G. Emmell, and the men who were part of his Civil War regiment -- 7th Regiment, NJ Volunteers. The 7th Regiment, NJ Volunteers was organized as a Morris County regiment. Since MAGS is based in Morris County, possibly our members are researching men who served with Private Emmell in the 7th NJ or in other regiments (there are many references in the Journal to visits among friends in other regiments). I am asking you to look over the list of names that follow which are from the Journal. All are soldiers. I would appreciate any information or material that you may have for any of these

men, especially that which relates to their Civil War experience. There are a couple of civilians of interest as well. They are:

• Silas Corey who visited the regiment several times at the front.

• George Emmell, Heyward Emmell's brother who visited often, but died in 1863.

• Caroline Emmell, Heyward Emmell's sister.

There is also a reference to a place called "Owl Town" which I have been unable to locate but is likely in Morris County. Remember that consistent and correct spelling was not the norm during this period. To help in identifying soldiers, I've included their regiment (e.g., 7NJ is the 7th Regiment). Those beginning with US (e.g., USCavalry) are regular US military units. There are not many of the US designations since most of the soldiers that fought in the Civil War were recruited as state militia, not into the US Army. If you have information that you think might be useful to me, contact me by email at [email protected] or phone at 973-377-3203.
