THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 10, 2020
YEAR A
MORNING PRAYER RITE TWO
THE WELCOME FROM THE INTERIM DEAN The Very Reverend Canon Laura F. Gettys
OPENING HYMN 343 Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless St. Agnes
Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless
thy chosen pilgrim flock
with manna in the wilderness,
with water from the rock.
We would not live by bread alone,
but by thy word of grace,
in strength of which we travel on
to our abiding-place.
Be known to us in breaking bread,
and do not then depart;
Savior, abide with us, and spread
thy table in our heart.
Lord, sup with us in love divine
thy Body and thy Blood,
that living bread, that heavenly wine,
be our immortal food.
THE EASTER ACCLAMATION & OPENING VERSICLES
Officiant Alleluia. Christ is risen.
People The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.
On this day the Lord has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
Christ has entered, not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven
itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Hebrews 9:24
THE INVITATORY & PSALTER
Officiant Lord, open our lips.
People And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
All Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia.

VENITE S-35 Come, let us sing to the Lord
Come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,
and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!
PSALM 31:1-5, 15-16 In te, Domine, speravi
1 In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
deliver me in your righteousness.
2 Incline your ear to me;
make haste to deliver me.
3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,
for you are my crag and my stronghold;
for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.
4 Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me,
for you are my tower of strength. Refrain.
5 Into your hands I commend my spirit,
for you have redeemed me,
O Lord, O God of truth.
15 My times are in your hand;
rescue me from the hand of my enemies,
and from those who persecute me.
16 Make your face to shine upon your servant,
and in your loving-kindness save me." Refrain.

THE LESSONS
A READING FROM THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES, THE 7TH CHAPTER,
BEGINNING AT VERSE 55
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing
at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at
the right hand of God!” But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against
him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats
at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus,
receive my spirit.” Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin
against them.” When he had said this, he died. Acts 7:55-60
Lector The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
CANTICLE M A Song of Faith
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by divine mercy we have a new birth into a living hope;
Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
we have an inheritance that is imperishable in heaven.
The ransom that was paid to free us
was not paid in silver or gold,
But in the precious blood of Christ,
the Lamb without spot or stain.
God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory
so that we might have faith and hope in God.
A READING FROM THE FIRST BOOK OF PETER, THE 2ND CHAPTER,
BEGINNING AT VERSE 2
Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if
indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals
yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual
house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For
it stands in scripture: “See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and
whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” To you then who believe, he is precious; but for
those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the
corner”, and “A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble
6
because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him
who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you
are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:2-10
Lector The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
CANTICLE R A Song of True Motherhood Dennis Janzer
God chose to be our mother in all things
and so made the foundation of his work,
most humbly and most pure, in the Virgin’s womb.
God, the perfect wisdom of all,
arrayed himself in this humble place.
Christ came in our poor flesh
to share a mother’s care.
Our mothers bear us for pain and for death;
our true mother, Jesus, bears us for joy and endless life.
Christ carried us within him in love and travail,
until the full time of his passion.
And when all was completed and he had carried us so for joy,
still all this could not satisfy the power of his wonderful love.
All that we owe is redeemed in truly loving God,
for the love of Christ works in us;
Christ is the one whom we love. -Julian of Norwich
THE GOSPEL
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s
house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a
place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself,
so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and
have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to
him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me
has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the
7
Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father
who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if
you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who
believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I
am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in
the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.” John 14:1-14
Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
THE SERMON The Very Reverend Canon Laura F. Gettys
THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS
Officiant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Officiant Let us pray.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
V. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance;
R. Govern and uphold them, now and always.
V. Day by day we bless you;
R. We praise your name for ever.
V. Lord, keep us from all sin today;
R. Have mercy upon us, Lord, have mercy.
V. Lord, show us your love and mercy;
R. For we put our trust in you.
V. In you, Lord, is our hope;
R. And we shall never hope in vain.
Suffrages B.
Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son
Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the
way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A Collect for the Fifth Sunday of Easter
O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and
confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence,
where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Collect for Quiet Confidence
Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom
it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who
have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their
sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for the Poor and the Neglected
Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed
and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of
your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you;
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. A Collect for Mission

Deacon
Our Lord lives and death has lost its power. Created in the likeness of God, we pray to see God’s
image in one another. Tested in our faith and strengthened by love, we pray for open hearts.
Liberated by water and the Spirit, we pray for those who do not share our hope, that they may
proclaim:
Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!
Gracious God, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, guide the hearts and minds of the search
committee, and our entire faith community, as we choose a new Dean. May we find a loving
pastor, a dedicated servant, and a visionary leader who will equip and inspire us to proclaim:
Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!
Joining with those who suffer through illness, famine, war, temptation, and trial-we pray today
especially for Kenneth Ford, Carolyn Ford, and Mack Wiggins; Ruth King; the Pouncey family;
Ronnie Rodgers; Rosemarie Myrdal and the Morrell family; Shannon Thornhill; Ryan and Mona
Davis; Lanney Mack; Dave Della Rocco and family; Sally Wolcott and family; Sheila Rhudy; Nick
French; Iolis Carruthers; for all those on the Cathedral Prayer List; and for those we now name. We
pray for their courage and strength that they may proclaim:
Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!
United in our hope that we and all who die will live again; we pray for family and friends who have
died, especially Ruth Pouncey, Dr. Lorna Breen, the Right Rev. James Coleman, Ahmaud Arbery,
and for all others we now name. Let us proclaim:
Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!
Awaken our hearts and minds to all the gifts and blessings that are showered on us every day.
We pray for those celebrating a birthday this week: Anna Ratton, Barry White, Roberta Ann
Horton, and Errol Moses. We pray with great expectations for those awaiting the birth of a child;
Justin and Amber Price; and Forrest and Kayla Williams. We also give great thanks for the
Steinhauer’s new granddaughter, Lily. We pray for the Cathedral’s Daughters of the King. In the
Anglican cycle of prayer we pray for the Anglican Church of Kenya; and in our Diocese for St.
John’s, Memphis. And we pray for blessings we now name.
Ever-creating God, be with us as the pall of this COVID-19 pandemic falls upon this “fragile earth”
which is our “island home.” We hold in our hearts and prayers all who are suffering in our nation
from “sea to shining sea.” We pray for the whole world. Our common anxiety is making us one,
undivided human family. We pray for world leaders as they chart these unknown waters.
Strengthen them to walk into the Light of a new, healing day for the whole planet. Help us to cross
our broken lands and be for each other bridges back to heaven. Lift the cares to which we cling.
Descend, O God, on us all to be our Guest. Show us how to find in everything blessing and rest. May
this be our prayer while we do not know how to pray and until the last light lingers in the west.
O true God, who has glorified your Son Jesus Christ as the pledge of our freedom from sin and
death, receive our praise and prayer through Christ our Lord, the great Amen and our Alleluia, now
and forever.
Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!

HYMN He leadeth me, O blessed thought William B. Bradbury
He leadeth me: O blessed thought!
O words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate'er I do, where'er I be,
still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
Refrain:
He leadeth me, he leadeth me;
by his own hand he leadeth me:
his faithful follower I would be,
for by his hand he leadeth me.
Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom,
sometimes where Eden's flowers bloom,
by waters calm, o'er troubled sea,
still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine,
nor ever murmur nor repine;
content, whatever lot I see,
since 'tis my God that leadeth me.
And when my task on earth is done,
when, by thy grace, the victory's won,
e'en death's cold wave I will not flee,
since God through Jordan leadeth me.
THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING
Officiant and People Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have
done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole
creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life,
and for the mystery of love.
We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for
the loving care which surrounds us on every side.
We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best
efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy
and delight us.
We thank you also for those disappointments and failures
that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.
Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the
truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast
obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying,
through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life
again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.
Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and
make him known; and through him, at all times and in all
places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN 656 Blest are the pure in heart Franconia
Blest are the pure in heart,
for they shall see our God;
the secret of the Lord is theirs,
their soul is Christ’s abode.
The Lord, who left the heavens
our life and peace to bring,
to dwell in lowliness with us,
our pattern and our King;
He to the lowly soul
will still himself impart
and for his dwelling and his throne
will choose the pure in heart.
Lord, we thy presence seek;
may ours this blessing be;
give us a pure and lowly heart,
a temple fit for thee.
THE DISMISSAL
Officiant Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
People Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in
believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
