JAMES THE LESS “My children, I will be with you only a lit- tle while longer. I give you a new com- mandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13-33-35 Dear friends in the Risen Lord, This week and next, St. James and Holy Redeemer will be served by Fr. Joe Donovan, a Maryknoll Missionary. Fr. Joe may be familiar to many of you because he lives in our neighborhood and often joins us for dinner, Holy Days and special events at the parish. I am blessed to have him helping while I am away. And you are blessed to hear about the Mission effort of the Catholic Church in America! In this year of Mercy, but al- ways, we should be aware of our responsibility to share the good news through loving, active service of others. (It is a part of our Parish Mission Statement: Celebrating Faith, Sharing Traditions and Serving Others to the Praise and Glory of God) So, please welcome him, learn from him and support the efforts of our Maryknoll Missionaries. As we hear in the Scriptures today the Kingdom of God is marked by our love for each other. This would be a good time to discern your call to serve in community. I have noted that many of our community have a great difficulty in committing to anything! By the power of the Holy Spir- it, you can gain a discipline of service if you honestly discern a ministry to offer the community. We need Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers to Serve at Mass, And Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick to go to Hospitals, Conva- lescent Homes, and to the Housebound. We need Greeters and Hospital- ity Ministers at Mass. We need couples to work with families for Baptism and couples preparing for Marriage. We need people to clean and care for the Church, to decorate for our seasons. We need you! So pray and ask God not: “if” you are called to serve, but “where” you are called to serve. Every baptized person must take up their proper role in the Body of Christ! Last week it was about Religious Sisters, Brothers and Priests. This week it is about you! Step up! Serve the Kingdom of God with love. As always, I wish you peace. - Fr. Ed

TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY

Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second read-ing from the book of Revelation (21:5).

Is this world of John’s vision only imagi-nary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today?

As Catholics, we are called to proclaim the Good News to all creation and to do so with compassion and love. It is with this task in mind that the Maryknoll Fa-thers and Brothers were founded and, for more than 100 years, have taken up the mandate of spreading God’s love around the world in areas that need it most. We provide love and support in addition to assisting in: health care and social welfare, economic and agricul-tural development, human rights, Evangelization and religious education, academic and vocational training, and communications ministry. None of our work would be possible without your pray-ers and support. By planning your generosity so that your gifts may be utilized both now and in the future, you have the ability to increase your support of our work. We welcome Fr. Joseph Donovan, M.M. to our parish community Sunday Masses on April 24th and May 1st. Fr. Donovan has been a Maryknoll Missionary priest for 37 years. He has worked among the indigenous populations of Peru, in the capital city of Lima and in the Andean highlands. Fr. Donovan has developed leadership training programs and networks of Basic Christian Communities. Within these communities he has also worked with his parishioners in social and eco-nomic projects. Please help support Fr. Donovan’s work—God bless and thank you!

Your Gift Can Help Share God’s Love with the World

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The French Revolution swept the church in France away in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan raves and romps. While mil-lions of faithful simply went underground and hung on for the ride, even the seven-day week was demolished along with the names of the months. What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and therefore marriage law in France, French Canada, and elsewhere. The code makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens. In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage, usual-ly accompanied by a patriotic speech about the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off to change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of those continue on to the church. For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near cer-tainty that the spouses are active worshipers, and that they will later present their children for baptism. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HRSJ BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP Our next book will be one Henry James considered a short piece. It is not quite a short story, but not quite a full blown novel either: :Washington Square”. It takes place in pre-Civil War New York City, when cows grazed in Manhattan and just about every part of the island north of 14th street was rural. Our next discussion will be on Friday, May 6, from 7-8:30 PM in the Holy Redeemer Rectory. Whether or not you have read the book, you are invited to the group for Christian fellowship.
