P R E S I DE N T

I am so happy to share with you all the amazing things you will gain as a student at St. Teresa’s Academy. As the oldest school in Kansas City (having observed our 151st anniversary), you can only imagine the tens of thousands of young women who have been educated and empowered throughout their time at St. Teresa’s.

Although two of the four buildings on campus may be historic, our curriculum, technology, classroom spaces, and sports complex are anything but! With our vast experience, as a student at St. Teresa’s, you will benefit from our commitment to remain a leader in all-female education. Mary Montag, one of our phenomenal science teachers, who, like me, has a unique perspective as both a faculty member and a graduate of St. Teresa’s, states it well, “We have one foot in our history, in this beautiful tradition, but we’re all about progress and moving forward.”

You will find progress all around you when you visit St. Teresa’s Academy during your Shadow Day, Open House or at an athletic or performing arts event. As part of our Academy 150 Capital Campaign, we’re in the midst of an $11 million enhancement to the Goppert Center (which holds our gym), and throughout campus. As a student at St. Teresa’s, you will benefit from and enjoy the results of this tremendous investment!

St. Teresa’s Academy’s steadfast mission to educate the whole student in body, mind and spirit was established by the Sisters of St. Joseph and remains our guiding light today. As you’ll see throughout this brochure, when you become a student at St. Teresa’s, in addition to a first-class education, you’ll gain more faith, friendships, confidence, not to mention fun experiences and incredible memories. You’ll be a special part of this

sisterhood at St. Teresa’s Academy!

You will be among the first to experience the innovative enhancements already under way as part of the STA Academy 150 Capital Campaign. Renovations to the Goppert Center and throughout campus will help to provide you with an incomparable educational experience, allowing you to create, organize, collaborate, and research in ways never seen before. Completion of the new spaces is expected by the spring of 2018.

ACADEM IC ADVANTAGES

Courses include an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), Advanced Placement (AP), honors, and college-level courses. Online courses through the Online School for Girls (OSG) and international travel opportunities allow you to learn outside traditional classroom settings. Modular class scheduling mirrors what you will find in college, which prepares you with significant experience in time management, self-discipline, and decision making.

H

LEARN ING TOGE THER TO BOOST SK I L LS

The dedicated teachers at St. Teresa’s Academy use an Active Learning method of teaching. Studies have shown that students learn more when they participate in the process of learning, whether it’s through group discussion, problem- solving, or role playing. This differs from traditional styles of teaching, where students absorb information through lectures. The benefits you will gain through Active Learning include improved critical and creative thinking skills, increased retention of new information, increased motivation, and improved communication skills.

ROLE MODELS PROV IDE CAREER I NS IGH T

You can take advantage of STA’s mentoring programs as an upperclassman. The eMentoring program matches you through the Internet with a professional mentor from more than 20 different career fields throughout the country. A partnership with Kansas City Area Life Science Institute (KCALSI) provides shadowing opportunities if you’re interested in the Life Sciences. Both programs allow you to gain career advice, support, and guidance.

Opposite: Tutors make it work! Faculty and trained peer tutors are prepared to work with you when you need a little extra help, would like a review of your work, or want to challenge yourself even more. STA’s new Math Hub and the StarWrite Center are popular spots for students to gather for group projects and quiet study.

St. Teresa’s Academy’s theological and service programs are designed to help you grow deeper in your faith, while instilling the gift of service to others. The Sisters of St. Joseph, founders of St. Teresa’s Academy, introduced STA’s mission long ago: “Love the dear neighbor and the world in which we live.”

H

PRAYER AND REFLEC T I ON

Time for prayer and reflection for you (and your family) are offered through weekly class Masses, monthly parent/daughter Masses, Eucharistic Adoration opportunities, and class retreats. Your involvement, whether helping coordinate your class retreat or as a liturgical music minister, is valued and encouraged.

H

LOVE THE DEAR NE IGHBOR

You will enjoy opportunities to serve others through programs designed for each class, student clubs, advisories, and the National Honor Society. During your junior and senior years, you will step out of the classroom and dedicate 90 hours to serve a local organization, experiencing first-hand essential lessons of empathy and the value in giving back to the community.

The lace-wrapped chapel offers a peaceful spot for meditative prayer. The early Sisters of St. Joseph made lace to support themselves and the poor.

You don’t have to be an artist, musician, dancer, actor, or journalist to participate in the arts at St. Teresa’s. Through the arts, you will discover new ways to express yourself, improve problem-solving skills, find a hidden talent, or forge new friendships.

At St. Teresa’s Academy, your artistic achievements will be showcased through theatrical, dance, and choral performance opportunities; art exhibitions; and online and print publications. The number of awards and nominations received by the talented students who have blossomed at St. Teresa’s is impressive (but too long to list)!

In order to help you compete and succeed in today’s ever-changing digital world, St. Teresa’s Academy continues to invest in the latest technology. You will receive (along with every other student) a Surface Pro 4 Tablet, loaded with the latest software.

St. Teresa’s introduced Microsoft Surface Studios in the STEAM curriculum. Surface Studios are computers with large monitors that combine the creativity of 2 and 3-dimensional illustration, and the higher processing capabilities needed for data analytics, game and app development, and proto-type drafting.

You will discover a wide variety of clubs, organizations, sports programs, and extracurricular activities to explore your interests, meet new friends, and help keep you involved at St. Teresa’s Academy. Through clubs you can dive into anything from World Culture, Cooking, and Drama Clubs to Filmmaking and Healthy Living.

STA’s sports teams are highly competitive, frequently rising to district, sectional, and state championships. Many athletes have been recruited to continue playing at the college level. If you’re not playing, join your classmates and the school mascot, Twinks, in the stands to cheer your team on to victory (costumes and face paint are a must)!

Going away are the days where teachers lecture and students

then memorize and “play back” the information. Physics, astronomy and robotics teacher Terry Conner

promotes much deeper understanding and retention.

Just as St. Teresa’s Academy lays in the heart of the Brookside/South Plaza neighborhoods of Kansas City, Missouri, so too does the beautiful quad act as the heart of the campus.

Like on a college campus, as a student at St. Teresa’s, you’ll pass between classes through the quad, shaded by trees. The 20-acre Windmoor campus is home to four buildings. The historic Music and Arts Building (M&A) was built in 1909, followed by Donnelly Hall, Goppert Center, and, most recently, the Windmoor Center. Sitting below the quad lays the McDonnell Family Sports Complex, featuring premier space for track & field, softball, soccer, and lacrosse.

Come by to visit STA’s campus to see for yourself the awesome changes that will be in store for you through the Academy 150 Capital Campaign.

The St. Teresa’s Academy distinctive seal is featured in the center of the quad, and is an iconic, meaningful spot for students (and alumnae) to gather.

Something incredibly special will happen throughout your time at St. Teresa’s Academy. While you are achieving your academic goals, experiencing the traditions, and forming lifelong friendships, a special sisterhood is developing. Your classmates and the thousands of alumnae who came before you take part in this sisterhood, a bond created by an appreciation for the strength, compassion, and talent developed in St. Teresa’s Academy women.

H

ADV ISOR I ES DEEPEN BONDS

Before entering St. Teresa’s, you’ll be assigned an advisory, which is similar to a homeroom. Finding out your advisory is a very exciting moment for freshmen. An advisory is comprised of a teacher and students from every class. You will remain with your same advisory throughout your time at St. Teresa’s, Academy and it’s the place that you’ll begin and end your day – and visit in between. Your advisor will help chart your academic path, while your advisory group are those you’ll pray with, and celebrate birthdays, holidays, and special events (so many reasons to order a pizza)! As you grow to be an upperclassman, your advisory can be a wonderful opportunity to provide leadership for those just starting out.
