1. All users: logging into Moodle

1.1 Navigate to http://moodle.tavistockandportman.ac.uk/

1.2 Click on the round Shibboleth login icon on the left-hand side of the page.

1.3 Enter your Shibboleth username and password and click Login.

If your browser offers to remember your details, please make sure you have entered them correctly before agreeing.

1.4 You should see the Moodle home-page once you have logged in.

Please click on the My Courses link on the top-left of the page. Here you will see the list of courses you are enrolled on.

Please select the appropriate area that will contain your submissions to mark.

2. Markers: How to download essays for marking

2.1 When you click on My Courses, you will see the list of courses on which you are enrolled in the Course Overview block.

Please select the Online Assessment page for your course (e.g. M7 Online Assessment Page). This page will contain the submissions for marking.

Navigate to and click on the assignment you will be marking.

All submissions are marked with a symbol that displays a hand holding a piece of paper.

2.3 You will see a screen similar to the one displayed.

Please click on View all submissions.

2.4 The page will reload and then only the essays assigned to you will appear in the Grading table.

(Note the Turnitin Plagiarism Plugin (where it says 6%). Further information about using this is available on Staff Support in Moodle.)

2.5 Select the assignments you want to download by using the tick boxes in the left-hand column and choosing Download selected submissions as shown.

(Untick the Download submissions in folders option if you want all the assignments in a single Zip folder. Leaving it ticked will put each assignment in a separate Zip folder.)

2.6 Your browser will then ask you to open or save the zip archive. Choose Save or Save as.

2.7 It is recommended you save it to a clearly marked area of your computer.

2.8 Click on the Zip archive to access and open the assignments.

3. All Users: Useful Tips

3.1 To navigate across the assessment grid, click anywhere on the grid and use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll to the end of the grid and back.

Alternatively you can use the scroll bar right at the bottom of the grid.

3.2 To hide and reveal grid columns, click on the + or – signs underneath the column title. Remember: if you can’t see a particular column please check that all columns are open, by opening all + signs.

3.3 To ensure you are seeing all your marking, please check that the filters at the bottom of the page are set as follows (see picture).

If you are a verifier and have some marking, please change the Marker Filter to your name.

4. Markers: how to enter marks, upload Feedback sheets

4.1 Navigate to the Grading table for your assignment (2.1-2.4 above). You will then see a table of all the submissions that you have been allocated. Click the Grade button for the student for whom to wish to upload a mark and feedback.

(Please ignore the Participant number – this is randomly generated by Moodle and has no relation to the student’s Tavistock details.)

4.2 On the marking page that appears, add the grade (green square), set the marking state to In marking if not already set (red circle) and click on the file picker icon (blue polygon) to begin the feedback sheet upload process.

4.3 The File Picker dialogue box will appear. Please make sure Upload a file is selected and then click on Browse. You may need to move the horizontal scroll bar of the file picker to see these options.

4.4 In the browse window that opens, navigate to your feedback file and select it. Click Open or a similar option on your device.

4.5 Select Upload this file to complete the process.

4.6 Your feedback sheet has now been uploaded but you need to select Save changes to complete the process.

4.7 Once Moodle has confirmed your changes have been saved, click on the Assignment name in the top-left corner. This will bring you back to the option to View all submissions. Select this to access the Grading table. Repeat steps 4.1-4.7 until all your marking in complete.

4.8 Please do not use the Change user option on the top-right of the marking page at any time.

This option is not relevant to our marking processes.

5. Supervisors: how to enter marks, upload reports

5.1 Please ensure all filters at the bottom of the page have been reset to ‘No Filter’, to ensure you see all students allocated to you. As these students have not submitted anything you will not be able to see them unless you turn all filters off.

5.2 You will then see a table of all the students that you have been allocated (If after turning off all filters, you are still not able to see them, please contact your Course Administrator as they will need to be allocated to you). Click the Grade button for the student for whom you wish to upload a report for.

5.3 On the marking page that appears, add the grade (green square) for reports this will be shown as outstanding/satisfactory/not satisfactory (please select from drop down), set the marking state to In marking if not already set (red circle) and click on the file picker icon (blue polygon) to begin the feedback sheet upload process.

5.7 Your report has now been uploaded but you need to select Save changes to complete the process.

6. Markers/Supervisors: how to edit or delete a mark, Feedback sheet or report

6.1 Follow steps outlined above to return the marking page where you first graded the submission (5.3 above). Then just alter the grade the student received by entering a number in the Grade out of 100 box.

6.2 You will have to remove the old Feedback sheet/Report and upload your new one. Click on the big icon of the file you wish to remove (red circle) and then press Delete (orange circle).

Confirm deletion. Then follow previous steps to upload a new Feedback sheet.

As always, remember to Save changes throughout.

8. Online Marking FAQs

“The assignment was due today, but I have looked at the assignment on Moodle and can’t see any

papers to mark. Why not?”

The Course Administrator will inform you when they have allocated marking for you to collect. This might take a day or two after the submission deadline. Contact them in the first instance.

“The Course Administrator says my marking is ready for collection on Moodle but I still can’t see it.

What shall I do?”

Please make sure you are looking at the correct assignment in the first instance. If this is still the case, email the Course Administrator cc’ing for TEL department [email protected].

Also make sure the filters at the bottom of the Grading table are set to No filter.

“I thought I was supposed to have a lot more marking for this submission but only have a few. Where

are the others?”

Please contact the Course Administrator as they are responsible for allocating the marking.

“When I upload feedback how do I know it has uploaded?”

Firstly when you look at the grading table, you will know you have least put the grade in if you notice under the grade column will be a number out of 100.

To confirm you have uploaded Markers Comments, use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the Grading table to scroll along the grid.

If uploaded correctly you will see under the column titled Feedback files your comment sheet. If not repeat the process of uploading feedback outline above.

“Moodle says I have an assignment that needs my attention but I’m pretty sure I’ve completed all my allocated marking. Help!”

Please ignore any messages like this when you log into Moodle. They are not relevant.
