By the increased activities on the docks and in the harbor, I see more of you are enjoying the beginnings of summer. In June, the club house was rocking with The Jones Gang din-ner concert, Warriors final games, dinners and breakfasts, bingo, crafts and book clubs, committee meetings, club rac-es, cruise-ins and BBQ’s, work parties and private parties. Many thanks go to the Aeolian volunteers who make all this possible! I encourage everyone to get involved.

There is much more on the summer “not to miss” list, which all includes live music. Your participation and RSVPs are critical for providing these special venues. Watch for details on the 4th of July celebration, the July dinner con-cert on 7/16 and the Tropical Party on 8/20. There are also rumors brewing of another Jones Gang concert.

Bikes and outboard motors are getting properly tagged; thank you for respond-ing to our urgent notice. The old bikes will be donated to a local non-profit that restores and donates them to those in need. The outboard motors must be tagged by July 15th. In August, they will go up for silent auction bids to Aeoli-ans. Please refer to the next August JIB for instructions.

We have a change to announce on our Board of Directors. Jack Sherwood, has decided to come off the Board of Directors. He has been an Aeolian Member for 29 years and served in many capacities on the Board and behind the bar. He served most recently as your Commodore for the past two years and Port Captain for the first half of this year. If anyone deserves a break, it is Jack! He assures us he will remain just as active at the club, but wishes to hand off his Port Captain responsibilities.

The Board of Directors has elected Nathan Johnson as Port Captain to fill the remainder of this term. He currently chairs the Harbor Committee, is an ac-tive volunteer, and has been assisting Jack with Port Captain responsibilities. Nathan will have general supervision of the Corporation anchorage, berth as-signments, and all of its property (excluding the clubhouse). He is no stranger to the maritime industry. He is a sailor and lives aboard at Aeolian YC with his wife Eva on their 37’ boat Ndoto Yangu. Together they own MarineLube in Alameda. Please help me welcome Nathan in his expanded role!

Commodore - Linda KiblerAt the Board meeting on June 17, 2016, Robert Todd was accepted as a member in good stand-ing. His sailboat is in the harbor. Bob was proposed by Judie Nelson and Linda Kibler. He has family here in Alameda, and he is currently living in Lakeport. He says he will attend work parties and social events He has repaired houses, and does electrical and plumbing work. Please welcome our newest member with a big hello and the world-famous Aeolian smile.

Richard Berman is rejoining Aeolian and would like to bring in his boat, a 19’ trophy. He is sponsored by Jack Sherwood. He was a member from 1999 to 2006, and then rejoined in 2013 until 2015. After recovering from a back injury, he would like to rejoin the club.

Jack, thanks for taking over the bar the other evening when I had to leave early. This leads us to bartending. I will be sailing the Salish Sea (Puget Sound, the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands, and the Straights of Georgia) for the next two months. Obviously, I will not be at the bar. Trained bartenders, this is your cue. Showtime! Those who wish to receive training, contact Paul Cahalen.

Welcome back, Shawn, and congratulations on your engagement. Hope to see Camilla soon.

We would love to have those of you who can cook a specialty dinner, say Mexican, Cuban, Cajun, barbecue, what have you, contact Evelyn to schedule a meal for a club evening. These are very popular! My wife, Barbara Ohler, has been enjoying play-ing ukulele with others who are also learning songs. They meet at the club at 6pm on Wednesday evenings. All are welcome. I will be sorry to miss some of the great events at the club this summer. Have fun at the Fourth of July and Tropical Party extravaganzas, and see you in September!

Rear Commodore- Richard Lee SmithHappy Summer Aeolians! Our June 4th Work Party was a great success, as we were able to complete the majority of a very important project: the installation of five safety ladders to enable a person in the water to climb back onto the docks. Thanks to Brian, Russel, and Douglass for your work on this. Thanks also to Gary and Don for work in the garden and Kris and Jackie for helping Tonya get ready for the Jones Gang Concert. My apologies if I forgot anyone, but Saturday was a busy day and I was out on the Bay with the Aeolian fleet helping with the sailboat race.

Our next Work Party will be July 2nd, and the focus will be getting ready for the July 4th party at the Club. Check out the Aeolian weekly email blast preceding the Work Party for the list of projects for the coming Saturday. We have a strong core of regular participants at the Work Parties and welcome fresh faces, as there is much to be done. And there’s lunch, too!

For the last several years, the Aeolian Yacht Club has been a polling location for voting. The Primary on June 7th allowed us once again to contribute our great house and ample parking lot for the community to use on this very important day. I want to thank Bryan Aylen for his help in the delivery of the voting equipment and Shawn Jonutz for locking up the building late Tuesday night.

Our recycling program is going splendidly! Mike Baldwin has been doing a great job keeping the bins clean and sanitized. You all probably know where the smaller tall bins go by now so if you see them on the back deck all clean and dry go ahead and put them back in their places! I’ve put a notice on the big blue rolling bin to not put plastic bags in the recycling-they evidently play havoc with the conveyor belts and scanning equipment in the sorting facility.

That’s all for now…have a great summer and hope to see everyone on the 4th of July! Remember to tell your friends and neighbors, as it is our most important public event of the year!

The summer sun is shining brightly on back deck and harbor, and it’s great to see folks enjoying their club with friends. We are eager to increase our membership, so remember to invite friends to join you for fun events. They may want a key! Please use the online signup option on the weekly blasts and calendar. We have had to cancel recent events when too few folks had committed. I want to thank our wonderful, hard-working team of events volunteers for their faithful efforts, and we would like to share the fun with others. Please honor your volunteer commitment and lend a hand so we don’t burn out our helpers. Please check the Weekly Blast for updates.

This year’s July 4th party is going to be really special with a live band, the Fundudes, rocking the afternoon. Our raffle baskets will again be outstanding. Thanks so much to Shirley Ross for her tireless work on this, and everyone who generously donated and contributed. This event is a community party and member recruitment effort, so please come out and enjoy it with friends. If everyone helps a little, we can all enjoy it. There is a volunteer signup sheet posted, so please take a glance and pitch in for the team effort. The Aeolian will participate in the Ballena Bay Poker Run around the island on Sat. July 9. We are excited to continue our sum-mer concerts with another wonderful performance by Silvia and her sax and friends on Sat. July 16. Thank you Hank for spearheading and organizing this great party. This year’s Tropical Party on August 20 will celebrate Cuba and our warmer relationship. Thanks to Liz, we will have Cuban food and a live salsa and mambo band. We will be hosting Pt. San Pablo, and we welcome other cruising clubs.

Upcoming in the call, our own Liz Allison will host a benefit dinner Sept. 16 to support disabled sailors and the Wheelchair Regatta at the end of September. The Aeolian will participate in International Coastal Clean-up on Sept. 17 and the Ming Perata Regatta, also 9/17. Ebony Boat Club will continue their tradition of cruising in Sunday 9/25 following the Wheelchair Regatta. The Spinnaker YC will cruise in Oct. 15 for an Oktoberfest theme weekend. We are hoping to have another great concert by Travis and the Jones Gang soon. Thanks so much to Travis and Tonya for their fabulous concert and dinner June 4. This is your club and we welcome you to offer your ideas and energy for meals, events, and activities that you would like to create. The next Events Committee meeting will be 7/2 at 9:30.

Fishing Report - J.T. Gardner

The hot salmon fishing action of May slowed down considerably in June, with most boats reporting low fish counts. The weather has been pretty tough, with many high-wind days making for difficult conditions. Most of the action has been in the central bay for stripe bass and halibut. On a recent trip, Shawn Jonutz landed his first ever halibut, and what a nice fish at 30 inches! I heard the cooking and dining went very well.

The fishing opportunities will continue as the summer progresses. Hope to see you out on our beautiful bay!

“Just to make it clear: Peter Evans never in his life owned the peapod now owned by Shawn Jonutz. Please don’t assume that the boys are the owners and the girls get to come along if they are good, and have done the dishes first. Thank you.” -Submitted by Cricket Evans

From the Editors: Cricket, thank you for correcting our embarassing and unintentially sexist assumption. We are truly grateful for sailors like you, who have been busy busting up the “boys’ club” in the boating world!
