We are pleased to offer dining, bar, and docking for

visiting members of reciprocal yacht clubs, as space

is available. We welcome visiting yachtsmen and

encourage small and even larger groups as cruise

ins to enjoy the Aeolian flavor!

If arriving by boat, it is important to make advance

arrangements with the club. With prior notice, we are

happy to host visiting yachtsmen on a space avail-

able basis. Visiting yachts must fly their home club

burgee and check in with the office. If you are not a

member of any yacht club, please contact the office

about scheduling a site visit, or possibly membership

in Aeolian Yacht Club, if that is your cup of tea.

To Sam and Susan Lavanaway, I thank you both for volunteering your

time and labor to refurbishing our bath-room down stairs…It looks great! A lot of hard, long labor was put into it and greatly appreciated by AYC. To Jeanne McCaffery, you are not forgot-ten for all the time you spend cleaning up the club house, back porch, bou-tique and the Stewards Quarters……you‟ve certainly earned the title “Facility Organizer!”

To Tom Charron – Many thanks for the time you have spent saving Aeolian from the bridge closings. Without your volunteer time and efforts spent dealing with the Bridge issues, our Club would have had some serious impacts. Thank you from all Aeolians!

To our Harbor Committee – you all have done a fine job, A-Dock will soon be completed and the Harbor is looking great with only a few more slips to fill.

To Sherri and Mike – you‟re never forgotten – just always there for us….and I extend a huge thank you to you both!

To our new Board of Directors – there are just too many wonderful vol-unteer members to list and with these volunteer members on board, you too will have a successful and happy year! HELMS-ALEE!!

Here we are at the end of another Aeolian board year. We have had our Annual Meeting and Elections and I want to say „WELCOME ABOARD” to the new slate of officers who will be our voice for 2011-12. You definitely have a great All-Volunteer Club to work with!

As Commodore this past year, I want to say I could not be more proud of everyone‟s efforts in putting on a show of great team-work on all our past events. I am proud and honored when I am pulled aside by guests from other clubs wanting to express their enjoyment and appreciation from visiting Aeolian Yacht Club especially the team-work that is done just for their entertain-ment. I am especially proud when our members pull me aside to say “how wonderful Aeolian is.” When our members step up with great posi-tive comments; and there were many, I know we have had a successful year! I thank you!

I want to take this time to thank Sue

Roderick for all the time and help she has volunteered helping our editor(s), being our advisor on our Annual big PICYA dinner, filling in as our Cruise-Out Chair, Secretary, and too many other areas to list. We all thank you Sue for hanging in with us and helping to make this year a success.

Thank you also to Scott Saylor and Al McCaffery who volunteered to fill in as our Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore at the last minute without much notice. My thanks to both of you for doing such fine job as our Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore. KUDOS to you both for a job well done!

To John Hannan – This is our main man! For it was John Hannan that managed our bar and turned it into a successful year.. John was out-standing in making sure our bar was opened and stocked for every event this year. Carrying cases of liquor up-stairs and recruiting bartenders two to three times a week for all our events and many rentals (which was a task in itself) but John came through and kept our bar open and running. Thank you John!

Many years ago I had the good fortune to live in Seattle – the boating capital

of the world. It seemed every-body had a boat and used them. I had sold the boat I owned in Sausalito when my company

transferred me so I was looking for a new one. The time was in the early sixties. Boeing wasn‟t doing too well and was letting most of their help go. So there were a lot of boats on the market at a cheap price. It was fun going from one boat broker to another until you found what you were looking for or at least you thought. I believe that most of us make the same mis-

take buying a boat either too small or too big. To big and the cost of running and maintaining is high. Too small and you are cramped for space and the cruising range is limited. I believe a boat of 28‟ to 30‟ for two people and 30‟ to 42‟ for a large family is about right. Regardless of what size boat you buy – use and enjoy it! I think I had the most fun on a 14‟ runabout. It was small for the Bay but it sure was fast. As we grow older we want com-fort and things at a slower pace.

The San Juan Islands in the state of Washington – what a wonderful place to cruise. You have all these small islands fairly close together. Most of the larger ones have inns and harbors so you always have a place to tie up your boat, take a shower, buy some

groceries and eat a decent meal.

Anacortas is the place you can charter a boat and take your dream cruise. Back in the days I cruised these is-lands all we had for navigation was a good government chart (cost $1.50), a parallel ruler, divider, compass and a ship-to-shore radio. Now with a GPS system you can travel with ease and safety. I think if you go on long cruises take the Power Squadron or Coast Guard courses. It is good to have the extra knowledge in case your GPS stops working and you find yourself up that well known creek without a paddle (to be continued). Gary Barker caught an 8 lb. The fiscal year for Aeolian Yacht Club ends on October 31st of each year. As Treasurer

for you this past year, I‟d like to give members this brief financial report.

On the whole Aeolian Yacht Club is doing well – we continue to have monies to put into our set aside accounts for reserve

spending on important areas such as dredging, harbor, clubhouse and “A” Dock. To date we are on target with each of these

reserve accounts and are planning some repair and maintenance work on the parking lot, clubhouse roof, and exterior paint-

ing in the next several months.

Because we have not had a full harbor over this past year, our revenues have not been sufficient to continue to add to our

main General Fund. As you know, our General Fund is the fund from which we pay our monthly bills and obligations. In the

late 1990‟s AYC had a goal of having $100,000 in the General Fund and we continue to work toward that end although at this

time we are a bit far from it.

By approval of the membership in 2007, we instituted a $10 monthly assessment fee in 2009 to help to pay for “A” Dock. The

Finance Committee is recommending to the Board of Directors that the assessment be discontinued as soon as possible as

the work on “A” Dock is nearing its major completion. Although the assessment will no longer be in place after a specific

date, there will be adequate monies in the “A” Dock set aside fund to continue to support the work there. The harbor set

aside reserve fund will also be used for repair and maintenance of the harbor including “A” Dock as needed.

We need to continue to add new members with boats so that we can once again have a full harbor.

Thank you for your support. We look forward to a new year with a continued forward-looking financial picture for Aeolian

Yacht Club.

NOTICE OF INCREASE IN DUES AND BERTHING EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 1, 2011

At the Annual Membership meeting in October 2007 rate increases of 3% per year were approved effective November

1, 2009 through October 31, 2014. The increases that will appear on your quarterly statements for November 1, 2011

are as follows:

• Kayaks/Small boats will go from $2.70 a foot to $2.78

• Berthing will increase from $4.76 to $4.90 a foot

• Annual Membership Dues will go from $276.00 to $284.00`

Ahoy Aeolians! October has been an-

other busy month at the club. We started

off the month with our Annual Swap Meet

on October 1st. I want to thank all the

members who helped setting up the event

on Friday, September 30th and the mem-

bers who worked the event on Saturday. I

especially want to thank Tom Charron for

working the Aeolian Booth and Brian

Aylen for working the hotdog stand. I also

want to thank Jeanne Edgar for all her

help. Both booths did very well.

The following week we had a Wedding

Rental on Saturday the 8th. We also had

a cruise-in from the Pittsburgh Yacht Club

arrive on Sunday the 9th. We had seven

boats attend. They arrived around 3:00

pm and then we had a BBQ Dinner for

them. It was a huge success. I want to

thank Mari Miyaki, Brian Aylen, Jeannie

McCaffery and the Commodore Jeanette

Clark for all their help. The Cruise-In folks

left on Tuesday the 11th headed for Sau-

salito. They said they always love coming

to the Aeolian because of the friendliness

of our members.

The Birthday Dinner on October 15th was

a huge success. It was once again put

on by Rob Schimdt and Claudia Char-

rette. It was a nice to see a good turn-

out. I want to thank all the members in-

volved in helping out. Thank you Jeanne

Edgar, Tom Eelkema, Diane Grant and

Joanne McCay. I‟m sure I have missed

someone so let me apologize in advance.

We have also posted our sign-up Sheet

for the Change of Watch/Past Commo-

dore‟s Dinner. It is a catered affair. The

menu is Surf and Turf. Prime Rib and

Alaskan Salmon, with all the fixings.

One more event planned is the Halloween

Party which is a Pot-Luck. It will be on

Saturday October 29th.

I just want to take a minute and express

my thanks to all members for giving me

an opportunity to serve as Vice Commo-

dore for the past several months. It has

been an honor. I learned a lot. I look

forward to serving as the Rear Commo-

dore for the upcom-

ing year. I want to

wish Rozz Guillory

luck as she takes on

the duties of Vice Commodore. I also

Just a short message to tell you how much I‟m looking forward to

all of Aeolian‟s social events this coming year.

Our first event will be the Change of Watch Dinner on November

5th. This is a formal catered event, awards will be given, Past

Commodores will be in attendance and a fun time for everyone.

Reservations are needed by November 3rd.

We will be having our Annual Tree trimming/potluck party on Sun-

day, December 4th at 3:00 pm. We will be decorating the club

tree and this is a family event so bring the kids, grandkids and

friends. There will be activities for the children with a surprise visit

from Santa. Come and start the holidays with your fellow Ae-

olian‟s. Sign up now!

The Round the Island Circumnavigation will be January 1st. We

will be serving our famous chili and gin fizzes. All of Alameda will

be cruising into our club so we will need lots of volunteers. This

is an event you don‟t want to miss!

To make this year successful, member participation is always

needed and appreciated. Event sign-ups are always on the back

porch, you can contact the club office or I can be reached anytime

In Memoriam

Robert ten Bosch Aeolian Yacht Club lost its oldest member and one who had held the longest membership. We were saddened

to learn of Robert “Bob” ten Bosch‟s death on August 13, 2011 missing his 101st birthday by just 48 days. Bob joined

Aeolian Yacht Club in 1929 and was a member for 82 years.

Born and raised in Alameda, Bob spent his entire life in the East Bay. His parents were the late Jeanne Greenman of Oakland and John Roderick ten Bosch. His Dad died when Bob was 9 years old during the San Francisco flu epi-demic in 1920. At the start of his freshman year at Alameda High School, he contracted polio and although he missed six months of school, he completed his missed curriculum over the next 3-1/2 years to graduate with his class. Bob had courted Lucile for several years and in order to win a $1 bet Lucile made, she pro-posed to Bob at a leap year New Year‟s Eve Party at Aeolian Yacht Club in 1931 and they were married for 67 years when she died in 2004.

His sailing years began formally in 1929 at age 19 when he built a 17‟ sailboat named Ho-Ta. At age 21 he, Bill Ashcroft and Al Bechtle built a 26‟ sail-boat named Hostar in Al‟s back yard. Daughter Janice Madding remembers “Dad and Larry Knight were friends. I remember going to Christmas parties at his home.”

At the start of WWII, Bob took a navigation class then joined the Navy as Chief Petty Officer. He served aboard the Chinqupin a net tender in the South Pacific. As many ships didn‟t have a navigator aboard, he led several convoys of ships from San Francisco to the South Pacific Islands including one from Guam to Eniwetok. He was a navigator aboard the Water Witch in the 1957 Transpac Race to Hawaii and the navigator aboard a boat sailing back from Hawaii follow-ing another Transpac Race. He raced and crewed most of his life.

Bob retired at age 80 after working for the National Lead Company (Dutch Boy Paints) for 47 years and then for L&H Paints for another 19. He was a poet, a gagster, a charming, generous and highly respected family man, father and friend. He regularly took his children water skiing on the Oakland Estuary after work, was manager of a softball team for Sequoia Lodge, Chairman of the Lodge‟s family Christmas party, and even volunteer painter (he and Bill Jensen painted the dome of the Scottish Rite Temple in Oakland).

Bob‟s grandfather, Alphonse Carpentier was one of the founders of the Encinal Yacht Club and Bob sailed out of that club until he was 18. At the age of 18 he was asked to join Encinal as an adult member but he joined Aeolian instead. When his daughter Janice asked him why he hadn‟t joined Encinal, he told her “all the real sailors belonged to Aeolian.”

He leaves children Janice Madding of Pleasanton, Bob ten Bosch, Jr. of Newark and Susan ten Bosch Paull of Orinda, 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

“The time a man spends sailing is not deducted from his life span.” Aeolian Yacht Club has truly lost one of our “Real Sailors.”

Francisco, Sonja lives in Alameda. She has crewed on sail-

boats and enjoys rowing. She has her own rowboat and is

a member of the Lake Merritt Rowing Club. Sponsored by

Jim LaMar and Jeanette Clark, Sonja is interested in parties

and events.

John (Jack) and Carolyn Mangan – Jack and Carolyn

were members of Aeolian Yacht Club from 1989-1992 when

they moved to Eureka and are coming back to Alameda late

this year or early next year and would like to berth their

powerboat in the Aeolian harbor. Jack is retired from Sea

Power Marine in Oakland and they enjoy cruises, parties,

and social events. Jack is a musician playing the saxo-

phone, clarinet and drums. They are sponsored by Brian

Aylen and John Hanan.

Greg Olin – Greg owns a commercial glazing company in

Las Vegas where he has a powerboat that he will be mov-

ing back to the Bay Area. Greg is sponsored by Jim LaMar

and Jeanette Clark and is interested in cruises, parties and

work parties.
