Ballroom Dance ~ Samba

Just in time for Mardi Gras, Samba, the dance of

joy and celebrations at carnivals in Rio de

Janeiro is coming to Olivedale in March.

Considered by most ballroom instructors as an

Africanized Polka with Brazilian roots, due to it

having the same “down and down” footwork as

Polka. Our teacher Stan will demonstrate the

proper technique and presence for this lively

dance. No partner is needed and classes are every

Friday at 1:00p, $5 per session, payable at the

front office before class starts.

BOOST LONGEVITY

Recently retired? If so, this new

you can be even more focused on

being healthy. No matter what

your age or situation, make the

coming years center around

reaching maximum health. Here

are a few suggestions to head you

in the right direction. Healthy

Lifestyle: Changes you make now

can improve your health and

reverse some of the damage done

in previous years. Healthy steps

like getting weight under control,

eating more fruits and vegetables,

exercising regularly, and not

smoking will improve health and

longevity at any age. Make time

to take care of your brain: Your

brain loves problems, something

new to challenge and figure out.

Take up a new hobby, or enroll in

a class. A healthy brain into older

age depends upon constant

mental stimulation. Use time

productively: The average retired

person spends over 4 hours a day

watching TV. 4 hours which could

be spent exercising, socializing,

cooking healthy foods or

volunteering. Maintain healthy

sleep habits: Lack of adequate

sleep constitutes an increased risk

of heart attack. Be sure to spend

some time outside every day, keep

a regular bedtime and engage in

regular physical activity. Embrace

Aging: Research has found that

those with a positive attitude

toward aging live longer than

those with a negative attitude. As

my dear Mother used to say, “You

have to do the best you can with

what you have!”

Pool Sign-Up for Spring Session, (April 10—June 2) starts Monday, April 3. Please pick up registration slips at the front desk prior to sign up. Be sure all medical and waiver paperwork is up-to-date through June.

Military Veterans of Olivedale

Wow! What an exciting meeting we had in

February. Between the Commanders Cap and

Pandora’s Box. We rattled the cage of protocol.

We saw what happens when the new Commander

has 30 days to prepare for his first meeting. Now

he has another 30 days before our next meeting on

March 6. Anyway, we needed a little excitement to

stir things up. More is on it’s way! Our meetings

are held on the first and third Mondays of each

month at 1:00p unless there is a holiday to

contend with. For more information on our group,

contact George Speakman Jr. at 740-654-8228.

Red Glad Hatters

The Red Glad Hatters will have a luncheon on

Friday, March 17 at Eastern Palace located

at 6078 East Livingston Ave., Columbus, OH

43232. We will be eating at 12:30p. You may

contact Queen Jeanie if you wish to carpool.

Please RSVP by March 10 to Marie Stevenson

614-302-0579 for a reservation.

Rambling Designers Garden Club

The Rambling Designers Garden Club will meet at

Olivedale on Tuesday, March 7 at 1:00p. Caryl

Woods, Judy Karcher, and Esther Messerknecht

will demonstrate various forms of flower arrange-

ments. Following will be a game of flower bingo

with flowers and plants as prizes. Hostesses are

Bonnie Hunt and Caryl Woods. Call Ann Huston

at 740-654-4739 for further information.

The “Bookies”

Our March selection will be “The Yellow House” by

Patricia Falvey. We will meet in the sunroom of

the Olivedale house on Tuesday, March 21 at

1:00p. Pick up a copy at the Fairfield County

Main Library. Contact Barbara Ramsey

740-653-3897 if you have any questions.

Olivedale Golf League

The 2017 Olivedale Golf League

will hold an organizational meeting

Thursday, April 20 at 8:30a at

Olivedale. Bring your sign-up card

and league fees to the meeting. League play will

begin Thursday, May 4 at Pleasant Valley Golf

Course on Coonpath and continue through

September. Do not forget to mark your

calendars. New members are welcome and will

gladly be accepted. Must be an Olivedale

member to play. The league is divided into 8

flights. The flights range in handicap of 4 to 30,

so there is room for all types of golfers. Sign-up

cards will be mailed in March to all who were

members last year. New members can get

sign-up cards at the meeting. The league fee will

once again be $15. If paying by check, make

payable to Gary Boch, Secretary/Treasurer. The

women’s league will also meet at this time.

Quilt Charms

During the month of February our club enjoyed a

Valentine’s Day Party where we enjoyed snacks

and we dressed in our Valentine’s Day attire. In

keeping with the spirit of giving we will conduct a

“Sit & Sew” during the month of March which will

focus on cutting, sewing, and quilting as a group.

We plan to get an early start for the holidays

knowing there will be a great need for quilts.

Please join us for our meetings held on Thursday

mornings at 9:00a. “A good friend like an old

quilt is both a treasure and a comfort.”

Bowling Banquet

The Bowling Banquet will be held in the

evening this year on Thursday, March 30 at

5:00p. We are looking for kitchen and serving

volunteers for this event. If you are interested

call the Olivedale office at 740-687-6655.
