Welcome Back Claudia Paddy–
2019 Monroe County 4-H Intern! I wanted to take a few moments to introduce to you our 2019 intern, Clau-dia Paddy, who will be spending her summer with us here in the Monroe Extension Office as well as the surrounding counties. Claudia will be with us May 13th through Monday, August 5th.
Claudia has been heavily involved in the Monroe County 4-H program for 13 years particularly in the small animal and leadership project areas. She has completed her second year as a student at Michigan State University. Claudia is very much looking forward to being challenged again in the work we can provide to her in an effort to learn more about MSU Extension her second year and further develop her knowledge and skills. She will be in charge of helping us create SPIN, or special interest, Clubs to run for 6 weeks at a time. Be on the lookout for these clubs to begin this summer.

Joshua Salenbien
Larry Kreps Memorial Scholarship
Joshua Salenbien is an 18-year-old senior at Dundee High School. Not only
is he involved in NHS, band, cross country, track, and diving at his school,
he has been a part of numerous community service projects including a
blood drive, working with Habitat for Humanity, day camps, and bible
school. His free time is spent helping his Grandpa on the farm and baling
hay and straw with his dad. Josh plans to attend the University of Michigan
majoring in chemistry.
Clay Sampson
Larry Kreps Memorial Scholarship
Clay Sampson is 18 years old and a senior at Ida High School. His 4-H
career has included raising steers, pigs, chickens, and ducks. Clay is
also a dedicated athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball and
led his peers as captain of the football and basketball teams for two
years. He works on his family farm along with Generators Plus in Ida,
MI. Clay will be attending Monroe County Community College.
Paige Elizabeth Funchion
Larry Hammons Memorial Scholarship
Paige is an 18 year old senior at Milan High School. She has been actively
involved in numerous clubs serving in leadership roles as Equestrian Team
captain, Horse and Pony Board Treasurer, Historian, and Queen, Monroe
County State Delegate and State Medalist, Junior Superintendent, MSU
Hippology team member, and volunteer with Ignite Church among others.
Paige will be majoring in engineering at either Michigan State University or
University of Toledo.
Katrina Lomas
Monroe County 4-H Shooting Sports Association Scholarship & 4-H
Cat Board Scholarship
Katrina is 17 and the current Monroe County 4-H Queen. She is an active
member of many 4-H clubs including Faithful Friends, C.S.I., Sharpshoot-
ers, Shooting Sports Association, Teen Ambassadors, Small Animal Associ-
ation, Cat Program, Terra Quest, Youth Leadership Board, and Expansion
and Review Committee. Katrina has helped on, and led, numerous commu-
nity service projects through her involvement in 4-H as well as the Rotary
Club. She will be attending Monroe County Community College.
Courtney Hotchkiss
Larry Kreps Memorial Scholarship
Courtney is an 18 year old member of The Showstoppers 4-H club. She has
enjoyed being a showman raising rabbits, chickens, turkeys, pigs, and
steers during her 4-H career. In addition to the Monroe County Fair, Court-
ney has also traveled with the MI Shows Program to compete in steer
shows across the state. She was selected as a DARE role model and Links
mentor at Ida High School and she is also a Dundee FFA member. She will
be attending Stautzenberger College and pursuing a career as a Veterinary
Technician.
Anna Hutchison
Monroe County 4-H Shooting Sports Association Scholarship
Anna is 17 years old and current President of the Shooting Sports Asso-
ciation. She attends Airport High School and is part of their Advanced
Women’s Choir, tennis team, and trapshooting team. Anna is also an
usher and vacation bible school volunteer for her church, St. John’s Lu-
theran Church, in Waltz. She plans to attend Concordia University Ann
Arbor to purse a degree in nursing.
Elisabeth Brockman
Charles Knabusch Memorial Scholarship
Elisabeth is 18 and a member of Country Kids 4H club. Through her 4-H ca-
reer, she has participated with Teen Ambassadors, Slow Spokes, Exploration
Days, New Horizons, Adopt-a-Highway, Fair Board Youth Representative, in-
cluding countless community service projects. Betsy says her involvement in 4
-H has given her leadership and communication skills that will certainly benefit
her future. She is also a talented performer in theater, dance, and choir and
currently serves as the music director at her church. Elisabeth will be attending
Monroe County Community College then transferring to Eastern Michigan for
Music Therapy.
Kaleigh Esquibel
Paul McGuire Memorial Scholarship
Kaleigh is 17 and the current Vice-President of her 4-H club, the Southern
Sun Trailblazers. She credits 4-H for teaching her patience, leadership
skills, public speaking, and how to be a great role model. She has volun-
teered for AG Day, helped as a Junior Superintendent, volunteered with the
Animal shelter along with working at Apple Charlies and Calder Dairy Farm.
Kaleigh plans to attend Henry Ford Community College majoring in Applied
Science/ASL Interpreter.
Grant Sonnenberg
Larry Hammons Memorial Scholarship
Grant is an 18 year old senior at St. Francis de Sales of Toledo. He is a
leader among his peers as the Student Body President, Captain of the
Golf and Track and Field teams, school ambassador, and student leader
of the November Salesian Conference. Grant has also helped in numer-
ous community service projects totaling nearly 500 hours across the
Greater Toledo Area. He will be attending Michigan State University Eli
Broad Business College for Finance or Agri Business.
Grace Herkimer
Larry Kreps Memorial Scholarship
Grace is 18 and the current Junior Livestock Association Secretary. She is part
of the Ida High School Soccer team and Trap Shooting Team. As a long time 4
-Her, she has been a member of the Huckleberry Hounds club, President of
Klover Kids club, Secretary of the Monroe County Dog Board, and has shown
sheep, dogs, and chickens. Grace volunteers with the Ida United Methodist
Church, Adopt-a-Road, Dundee FFA AG day, and Monroe County AG day.
She is excited to continue her education at Michigan State University to pursue
a degree in Agricultural Operations.
Faith Hosler
Larry Kreps III and Larry Kreps Scholarship
Faith is a senior at Ida High School and member of the Country Charmers 4
-H club. She has raised livestock throughout her 4-H career and credits this
experience for teaching her hard work, dedication, sense of responsibility.
Faith plans on attending the University of Toledo and enlisting in the Ohio
Air National Guard. She wants to study logistics and communications and
pursue a career in agriculture and logistics.
Anthony Vandermeer
Charles Knabusch Memorial Scholarship
Anthony is a 17 year old senior at Ida High School where he plays on the
golf team. He is involved in the Expansion and Review Committee, Youth
Leadership Board, 4-H Council, and has been a member, Corresponding
Secretary, and President for the Small Animal Association. He has en-
joyed several opportunities to serve in the community volunteering with
MCOP Lord’s Harvest Pantry, God’s Works kitchen, and the Lutheran
Home. Anthony will be attending the University of Findlay in their Pre-
Veterinary Medicine program.
Craig Lajiness Jr.
Charles Knabusch Memorial Scholarship
Craig is a 17 year old senior at Ida High School. He has enjoyed raising and
showing poultry and swine projects at the Monroe County Fair. As the current
President of his 4-H club, Craig has been a leader in numerous community
service projects. His favorite efforts were building wood duck boxes for the
DNR and making fidget blankets for residents at a nursing home. Craig is cur-
rently dual enrolled with Monroe County Community College and has been ac-
cepted in Mercy College of Ohio’s radiology program.
Noah Doederlein
Judy See Monroe County 4-H Academic Scholarship
Noah is an 18 year old senior at Airport High School where he has served
as President of National Honor Society, Secretary of the Interact Club,
Class President, as well a leader on the Quiz Bowl, Cross Country and
Track and Field teams. He has been a 4-H participant at the local, state,
and national levels taking on numerous leadership roles throughout his ca-
reer. Some highlights of his involvement have been attending the Royal Ag-
ricultural Fair in Toronto, Canada, Citizenship Washington Focus in Wash-
ington D.C., and National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. He currently
serves on the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council working with
MSU Extension advisors to start service campaigns across the state. Noah
would like to become a legislative aide in the federal government and will be
continuing his education at Michigan State University, James Madison Col-
lege.
Lilly Anderson
Marie Siebarth Memorial Scholarship
Lilly is an 18 year old senior at Summerfield High School where she is in-
volved in the Student Prevention Leadership Team, Yearbook staff, cross
country, softball, and basketball teams. As a member of the Ottawa Lake
Servers, she has helped and led many community service projects help-
ing cancer patients, assisted living residents, Monroe Humane Society,
Meals on Wheels, Ebeid Hospice Center. Lilly is currently dual enrolled
through Lourdes and will be continuing her nursing education at Kellogg
Community College.
Paige Sweet

Paige Sweet is 19 years old and currently attends Michigan State University.
She is part of Teen Ambassadors, New Horizons, Small Animal Board, and the
State Youth Leadership Council. Paige enjoys public speaking, community
service projects, and traveling through 4-H. She has had the opportunity to in-
tern for Senator Dale Zorn communicating with constituents in the district. In
college, Paige as also become a member of Women in Business and Alpha
Phi Omega. She will be continuing her education at Michigan State University
Sydney Janssen
Judy See Monroe County 4-H Academic Scholarship
Sydney Janssen is 19 years old and a member of the Country Charmers 4-
H club. She participates in the beef, swine, and rabbit project areas. The Ida
High School alum has been National Honor Society President, Junior Live-
stock Association President, a Young Life ministry leader, and Bluestreak
Buddy Peer Mentor. Sydney will be continuing at Michigan State University
to complete her degree in Biosystems Engineering.
Dominique Milkovich
Marie Siebarth and Larry See Monroe County 4-H Academic Scholar-
ships
Dominique is 17 years old and a senior at Summerfield High School
where she has played softball and volleyball, and participated with Na-
tional Honor Society, Pep Club, Gardening Club, and Student Council.
Dominique has also served as Secretary of the Horse and Pony Board,
President of Hearts and Hooves 4-H club, and President of Funny Farm 4
-Hers club. She will be attending Central Michigan University to pursure
Marketing or Pre-Law.

2019 Fair Dormitory Update
Unfortunately due to changes in MSU’s Youth Safety and Overnight Housing Poli-
cy, 4-H Council will not be able to offer the 4-H Dormitory experience at the 2019
Fair.
During the week of fair, the 4-H dormitories and showers within the activity cen-
ter will not be available for use. Showers and changing facilities around the
grounds are available as usual.

2019 4-H Parade of Flags & Flag Competition
Clubs are highly encouraged to have a member carry their club flag in the fair pa-
rade on Sunday, July 28th. Register your member and flag with the Parade of Flags
form. Members carrying flags MUST have a 4-H Fair shirt being sold by Teen Am-
bassadors ($10).
This is open to ALL clubs who currently have flags or would like to design a new
one! Flags will be turned in at the Fair Parade on Sunday of Fair to be judged and
remain on display in front of the 4-H Activity Center. CASH PRIZE AWARDS: 1ST-$50,
2ND-$30, 3RD-$20.

Fair Registration Day
Community leaders or their designated club representative must submit complet-
ed fair forms on June 14th between 1pm & 7pm at the 4-H Activity Center. Regis-
trations will not be accepted from individuals—Only registrations being turned in
as a club from the club representative will be accepted. It is extremely important
that all members get all of the information to their leaders in time for them to sub-
mit the forms.
Registrations for fair will only be accepted on June 14th, between 1:00 and
7:00pm at the 4-H Activity Center.

Fair Reminders Fair will be here before we know it, and we want to make sure you are all prepared. Listed be-
low are some important things to remember.
Premium Catalogs & Registrations: Your community Leader will have all fair registration
materials for members to complete in order to exhibit at the 2019 Monroe County Fair. Mem-
bers should check with their club leaders to see when they want the completed paperwork
turned in. It is the responsibility of the Community Leader to submit all registrations for their
club. Individual registrations will NOT be accepted on June 14th, they MUST be turned in as a
club. If you have questions please contact your Community Leader. PLEASE REMEMBER: Use
the back pages from the premium catalog-THE PAGES WITH THE CLOVERS. All 4-H pages have
small clovers on the top of each page; these indicate the 4-H divisions.
Premiums You will be receiving premiums this year for everything except Market Livestock.
The Fair Board will be paying $3.00 for blue ribbons, $2.00 for red and $1.00 for white.

4-H Royalty As we approach the 2019 Monroe County Fair royalty nomination are upon us.
You can be nominated through their local community clubs, county boards,
committees, or special projects. The 2018-2019 4-H Royalty Katrina Lomas,
Ethan Harbaugh, Alana Aluph and Camden Schmidt have done an outstanding job
and continue to represent us well.
It is encouraged that you participate in the interview process which will be held on
Tuesday, July 16th at 7:00pm at the 4-H Activity Center on the fairgrounds. Please dress
appropriately for interview. To be eligible for being named county royalty, you
MUST participate in an in person interview. No Phone interviews will be allowed.
As candidates, you are invited to ride on a float in the Fair Parade on Sunday, July 28th
at 1:00pm. Meet at the parade start site by 12:00pm if you wish to ride.
The 2019-2020 4-H Royalty Contest will be held Wednesday, July 31st at 7:00pm in the
Andersons Show Arena. Each 4-Her will be introduced and presented with a certificate
recognizing them for their participation.

Great Neighbor Photo Contest
Tractor Supply Co. (TSC)is holding its yearly Great Neighbor Photo contest. Until June 16, Michigan 4-H members and FFA youth have the opportunity to submit a memorable photo of 4-H or FFA projects. The photo should illustrate how you have made a positive impact in your community. Include with the photo a brief caption explaining your photo submission in 200 words or less. TSC will recognize three winners at each stop along their fair tour route as a way to highlight the differences that both 4-H and FFA make in their communities. 4-H Healthy U @ MSU Are you interested in learning more about living a nutritious and
healthy lifestyle by maintaining your physical and mental health?
If the answer is yes, join Michigan 4-H for a one day program at
Michigan State University on August 2.
Participants of the program will be provided information on
nutrition, physical fitness and emotional health, with tips
regarding how to maintain your health throughout the year. The
event will be held on campus, with a check-in time at 9:30 a.m. and will last till 5:00 p.m.

Every year, counties across Michigan offer 4-H youth, ages 11 and 12, the opportunity to participate in Michigan 4-H State Awards’ 4-H Mark of Excellence essay contest. The essay theme is “Because of 4-H, I can…” and the youth referred to a variety of memorable experiences in their time as 4-H’ers.
As part of the contest, up to two 4-H youth essays from each country are selected to be recognized as award winners. In 2019, the following 37 4-H members from 26 counties were selected as the 2019 Mark of Excellence county winners.
Each recipient received a medal, and their winning essays were added to the Mark of Excellence history book at the Michigan 4-H Foundation and State 4-H Office at MSU Extension. The essays are also on display at the Kettunen Center in Tustin, Michigan. Congratulations to our winners!
