The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there ap-peared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Je-sus. Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters-one for you, one for Moses and one for Eli-jah." (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.." Mark 9:2-9

This biblical event appears in each of the Gospel books as an important moment in the life of Jesus and evidence of his divinity.

The transfiguration of Jesus Christ was a powerful demonstra-tion of His divine nature and manifestation of His glory, which Jesus possessed prior to coming to earth in the human body. This revelation is referenced in a passage in the Apostle Paul's message to Phillippi. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Where-fore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:5-11 KJV).

ST JOHN VIANNEY, PATRON OF PARISH PRIESTS Known as the Curé of Ars, John was born near Lyons, France

in 1786. He became the parish priest of the village of Ars-en-dombes, where he spent the rest of his life. He was so renowned as a confessor that hun-dreds visited daily. He heard confessions for twelve to sixteen hours a day and gave a short les-son each morning. Three times he tried to join a monastery but each time he was persuaded to re-turn. St. John Vianney died in 1859 and was can-

onized in 1925; his feast day is Tuesday, August 4. Recommending liturgical prayer, John Vianney would say,

“Private prayer is like straw scattered here and there: If you set it on fire, it makes a lot of little flames. But gather these straws into a bundle and light them, and you get a mighty fire, rising like a col-umn into the sky; public prayer is like that.”

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

THANKS DON!

I would like to thank Don Schlonski for his 5 years of Service at St. Leo’s on behalf of the St Leo Parish staff. Don and wife Kris

will be moving down South and Don’s last day at St. Leo’s will be August 7th. Way before Don became a valued employee, keeping our Parish safe, clean and operational, he and his fam-ily were very active parishioners. Don coached Jr High Softball & Kickball, he assisted in welcoming & the safety of parishioners at the Lifeteen Mass, he brought Financial Peace University to St Leo’s,

served on the Parish Pastoral Council, was a Cursillista, promoted Beginning Experience in the Rochester area and a member of the Knights of Columbus, as well as many community organizations. I am sure I have left some of Don’s many contributions out, but know that Don has left his footprint in the St Leo/Hilton-Parma Community and we are all better for having known him. Don has always thought outside of the box and looked at situations to see how they could be made better for the growth and well-being of our parish and community. We will miss you Don and your take charge personality, but we wish you and Kris the best in the future down South. Thank you, Don! Denise

THE COLOR OF FRIENDSHIP Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. All claimed that they were the best. The most important. The

most useful. The favorite. Green said: "Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves.

Without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority." Blue interrupted: "You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life

and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing."

Yellow chuckled: "You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."

Orange started next to blow her trumpet: "I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."

Red could stand it no longer he shouted out: "I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy."

Purple rose up to his full height: He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs, and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."

Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."

And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Their quarreling became louder and loud-er. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.

In the midst of the clamor, God began to speak: "You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't you know that you were each made

for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me." Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands. God continued: "From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all

live in peace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one another. — Author Unknown
