Can you be… Deng wanted the

economic freedom of capitalism without the political freedom that comes from democracy.

Page 7: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

The Good… China has the 2nd largest

economy in the world as measured by GDP PPP.

China has seen tremendous growth rates for the past two decades +.

A middle class is emerging in modern China.

Ice Cream??? OR I Scream!!! A pound of pecans has

jumped from @$2.00 a lb to over $6.00 a lb as Chinese consumers have begun to demand this product (WSJ).

Do you think that China is driving up the price of other commodities?

Page 9: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

One order of capitalism – hold the democracy !!

NOT an easy task to accomplish!

Page 10: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

Example – Tiannamen Square

Page 11: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

The Bad… Tiananmen Square showed

that China’s government would not have their authority questioned by pro-democracy student protestors.

Lesson learned – economic freedom is NOT political freedom!

Leftover Men

Page 13: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

The Bad… China has a One Child

Policy enacted to control population.

It is more of a strong guideline rather than a hard and fast rule – some exceptions are made.

Unintended consequences???

Page 14: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

Bubble Trouble?

Page 15: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

The Ugly… Environmental

degradation – in rush to modernize is China irreparably harming the world?

7 / 10 Most polluted cities in the world are located in China (source Discovery

News).

Page 16: Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion

The Ugly… China’s economy as

measured by GDP per Capita PPP is NOT very strong.

Poverty levels for many Chinese are still very high.
