That’s why this February, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time, ensuring loved ones have the strength and support to battle cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 3 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with can- cer in their lifetime. An estimated 10,560 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Nebraska this year. Many of these people will likely have a need for blood. “A loved one’s cancer diagnosis often makes families and friends feel helpless. That’s why the Give Blood to Give Time partnership with the American Cancer Society is so important,” said Dr. Pampee Young, chief medical officer, American Red Cross. “When someone donates blood or platelets or makes a financial gift, they are helping to give patients and their families time, resources and the hope they need to fight back.” To schedule a blood or platelet donation appointment or make a financial gift, visit Give- BloodToGiveTime.org. ONE FINAL PUSH Nebraska lawmakers who want to minimize partisanship when they redraw the state’s political boundaries will make one final push to change the process before it begins anew next year, but creating an independent commission to guide their work appears to be a lost cause. Barring any changes, the process that’s set to begin in the 2021 legislative session will follow the same rules that led to a bitter struggle between Republicans and Democrats during the last redis- tricting in 2011. Several proposals to create an independent commis- sion to draw legislative, congressional and other districts have stalled, including one vetoed by Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts. NEW FRAUD ACTIVITIES The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are warning residents of two new fraud activities. Individuals claiming to repre- sent Amazon or Apple call the victim and claim their account has been hacked, but more information is needed to issue a refund. The perpetrator then requests a photo of the front and back of the vic- tim’s driver license to verify their identity, followed by a request for their bank information. Victims are finding themselves subject to fi- nancial as well as identity theft. A second, similar scam, involves a phone call from an individual claiming to represent the FBI. The per- son requests identity verification, including a photo of the front and the back of the victim’s driver license. This is followed by a demand for money. The DMV urges residents not to share an image of their driver’s license, or the information contained on it, with anyone unless absolutely necessary. Doing so opens the person to identity theft and fraud. Should you have any concerns about whether a phone call you are receiving is legitimate, do not provide any personal information. Instead, hang up and call the organization directly. If the call is le- gitimate, the company or government representative will have no objection. If you believe you have fallen victim to this, or any other scam, please contact local law enforcement immediately for further advice. GIVE BLOOD AND GIVE TIME Patients fighting cancer need more blood than patients fighting any other disease, using nearly one-quarter of the nation’s blood supply. That’s why this February, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time, ensuring loved ones have the strength and support to battle cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 3 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with can-cer in their lifetime. An estimated 10,560 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Nebraska this year. ONE FINAL PUSH Nebraska lawmakers who want to minimize partisanship when they redraw the state’s political boundaries will make one final push to change the process before it begins anew next year, but creating an independent commission to guide their work appears to be a lost cause. Barring any changes, the process that’s set to begin in the 2021 legislative session will follow the same rules that led to a bitter struggle between Republicans and Democrats during the last redis-tricting in 2011. Several proposals to create an independent commis-sion to draw legislative, congressional and other districts have stalled, including one vetoed by Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts.

NEW FRAUD ACTIVITIES The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are warning residents of two new fraud activities. Individuals claiming to repre-sent Amazon or Apple call the victim and claim their account has been hacked, but more information is needed to issue a refund. The perpetrator then requests a photo of the front and back of the vic-tim’s driver license to verify their identity, followed by a request for their bank information. Victims are finding themselves subject to fi-nancial as well as identity theft. A second, similar scam, involves a phone call from an individual claiming to represent the FBI. The per-son requests identity verification, including a photo of the front and the back of the victim’s driver license. This is followed by a demand for money. SPORTS The McCook Bison wrestlers finished fourth at the Southwest Con-

ference Tournament Friday in Ogallala. Valentine won the meet

with 186 points. MHS scored 92. Alec Langan and Reid Steinbeck

won individual titles at 195 and 285. The Bison will travel to

Scottsbluff for their district tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Bison basketball teams picked up wins on Saturday at Ains-

worth. The Lady Bison won the opener 67-60. Tiara Matson led the

Bison with 18 points. Shawna Wilkinson added 12 and Peyton

Doucet 10. The Bison boys won the nightcap, 75-46. Cam Berry led

the Bison with 21 points. Cole Cappel added 14 and Logan Baren-

burg 11. The MHS girls and boys will host Gering on Thursday and

Scottsbluff on Saturday.

The McCook Community College baseball team opened the season

winning three of four games after splitting a pair of games Satur-

day, winning the first game 12-11 and dropping the finale 7-4. In

similar fashion to the season opener Friday, the Indians got out to

a commanding lead in Game 1 Saturday but had to hold on for the

win in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Blazers loaded the

bases with two outs in the seventh before redshirt freshman re-

liever Nick Wellman (Quincy, Ill.) came up with a strikeout to end

the game. "It was good for us to win a tight game, it got pretty

tight in the bottom of the seventh but Nick Wellman struck out the

last hitter to end the game," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. The 3-1

Indians are in Kansas for the next four games including a Wednes-

day game at Garden City (3 p.m.) and a three-game weekend set

at Parsons, taking on Labette Community College in a double-

header Saturday (1 p.m.) and a single nine-inning game Sunday (1

p.m.).
