“Nurture your mind with great thoughts. To believe in the heroic makes heroes.” - Benjamin Disraeli
From the PrincipalDear Parents
Year 6 FarewellThanks to all of our parents who have started to use POP for payments of school accounts. I used the facility last week and must say that it was efficient and easy to use. Our Administrative staff are working hard to integrate this new finance package into our processes with minimal disruption to parents and they are doing a great job.
School Uniform - BackpacksI write to clarify recent information sent home regarding school backpacks. I wrote to the community earlier in the year indicating that our school backpack is part of our school uniform and as a community we endorse the school’s policy of expecting students to wear our uniform.
I understand that some students at the start of the year had purchased non-school backpacks. In consultation with the P&C, after the bomb threats, we indicated that we will be enforcing the use of school backpacks as part of enhanced security procedures from the beginning of 2017. The only exceptions are our current Year 6 and our current Year 5; both these grades will be required to purchase a plain black backpack, should they require a new one prior to finishing school at Mona Vale. These are available from our Uniform Shop via pre-order arriving in October or from any retailer who stocks this item.
School GatesCurrently, all but two of our school gates have been locked between 9am- 2:30pm. After discussion with staff I have decided to have the gates closed but not locked during these times to allow easier access to the school by parents. Our Year 6 students have been allocated gates to shut in the morning and new signs will be placed at each gate requesting it be closed after use. The school will monitor the change to see if it is working.

From the Principal
School Play EquipmentA reminder to parents that school play equipment is not supervised by school staff after school. Parents are welcome to supervise their children on the equipment if they wish but it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure their child plays safely.
White Ribbon EveningMona Vale is a “White Ribbon School” and in collaboration with the P&C we are hosting a White Ribbon evening on the 29th July at Mona Vale Golf Club, save the date. The evening will be an opportunity to hear from guest speakers and ambassadors and, as a community, show our support for this organisation. My thanks to Miss Fiona Kelsall and Mr Matt Kelson who have taken leadership of our school’s involvement as a White Ribbon School and our P&C for supporting this initiative. More information will be forthcoming.
Fight on the BeachesFight on the Beaches is hosting its 3rd annual ‘Christmas in July’ Charity Ball on Friday 8th July with the goal of raising over $200 000 for cancer research. Tickets are currently on sale until 24th June, so don’t miss out on a fabulous evening of hope hosted by Richard Wilkins in the fight against cancer. Dance the night away with Jellybean Jam, and do your bit to help find a cure. Visit www.fightonthebeaches.com for more information.
The Committee are also looking for volunteers to help out on the night too. Please visit www.fightonthebeaches.com/volunteer.html to register your interest.

White Ribbon
White Ribbon is Australia’s campaign to stop violence against women. At Mona Vale Public School, we are educating the children in establishing Respectful Relationships with one another and are aligning this with our three school rules; Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best.
As a staff, we have written a Respectful Relationship Program which will strengthen our school’s capacity to support children and young people to have healthy and respectful relationships with one another. We have also introduced a slogan of ‘Don’t do that mate for the children and staff to use both in and out of the classroom. This enables children to stand up and have a voice if they see something that is not ‘respectful’.
We are hoping that this will lead to our children growing into respectful young adults who make a change in our community for the better.
Mr Greg Jones, Mr Matt Kelson and Miss Fiona Kelsall attended a course to deploy this program within our school. They were trained in the White Ribbon – Breaking the Silence Program and have since educated the staff at Mona Vale School.

Live Life Well
Treats For Special OccasionsFood is an important part of special occasions for everyone and should be enjoyed. Your child may be invited to a party with lots of foods high in fat and sugar or to a meal at a fast food restaurant. These meals will do no harm as long as they are only eaten occasionally. But remember, children’s parties don’t need to be filled with junk food to be fun. Try to include some healthy foods as well.
Here are some suggestions:
• pretzels• mini pizzas• fruit platters• fresh berries • finger sandwiches• low-fat mini fruit muffins• homemade popcorn• slices of watermelon• frozen orange wedges• hummus and pita bread• cheese cubes and crackers• vegetable sticks and rice crackers with dips • toasted Lebanese bread in place of corn chips and crisps

We are now selling black gloves in 3 sizes for $7.00 and black scarves for $8.00.
If your daughter is interested in wearing long plain green pants this winter, we have the old styles in sizes 12, 14 and 16. We also have the tartan pants in various sizes. We are giving these away for free. Both pants will be in a box in the uniform shop if you would like to take a look until the end of this term.
We are now slowing down in the uniform shop and don’t need any help until late Term 3 when summer changeover occurs. I would like to thank all my volunteers this term; Rebecca Scicluna, Rebecca Sambo, Hannah Jones, Nicola Hartley and Alison.
Volunteers are always needed so if you can spare a couple of hours once or twice a month, please email me your contact details to the email address below.
Profits made during the year in the uniform shop are given back to the P&C to support initiatives.
