It gets its name from the large horn on its beak. It used to be seen all over Malaysia, in rural as well as urban areas. Hornbills were often seen in pairs. Nowadays, most of the hornbills are found in national parks and zoos. Most hornbills live on treetops. They feed on fruit, although quite a few of them are known to live on small plants and animals. She sits there to hatch her eggs and her mate feeds her through this hole. The birds are treasured for their beautiful feathers and unique beaks. Without them, we would live in a very dark world. We use them to make pictures or images of people, animals, things and places. Of course, what we see depends on how strong the light is at that moment.Light enters our eyes through a black hole called the pupil. The iris, the coloured part of the eye, controls the size of the pupil. The pupil becomes bigger when there is not enough light. The light goes through a lens inside our eye. This lens can change its shape to let us see things that are near or far away. If too much light gets into our eyes, we will be blinded for a little while. However, if there is not enough light, what we see may only be a shadow or an outline. The light that goes through the lens is focussed onto the retina. This is where the picture or image of what we see is made. Then it is sent to the brain.

In May 1818, Sir Stamford Raffles went on an expedition with a botanist, Dr Joseph Arnold, to the highlands of Sumatran Pasemah in Indonesia. The journey was dangerous as the mountains reached up to five thousand feet high in some places. Not many people had passed through these mountains. It was here that they came upon a strange plant, now known as the Rafflesia. The Rafflesia has no leaves, stem or even roots. It is a parasite, growing and living off another plant. It has only one flower which is huge, measuring nearly a metre across. The flower only blooms after five years of growth. The plant gives off a nasty smell, like the rotting of fruit. The smell attracts flies to it which then help to pollinate the flower. The flower has five brick-red petals with spots of a lighter colour on them. The petals form a cup-like container in the middle of the flower. This cup can hold up to a gallon and a half of water. The local people call this plant the Devils Betel Box. Scientifically, it is named Rafflesia arnoldi in honour of Sir Raffles and Dr Arnold. The Rafflesia can only be found in Indonesia and Sabah, Malaysia. It is a rare flower and not many people get to see it in full bloom. There are very few such flowers and it is now an endangered flower. Some of the flowers rot before they can bloom while others are damaged by animals as the flowers grow on the ground.
