Our eyes are very important because they help us see the things around us. In May 1818, Sir Stamford Raffles went on an expedition with a botanist, Dr Joseph Arnold, to the highlands of Sumatran Pasemah in Indonesia. The journey was dangerous as the mountains reached up to five thousand feet high in some places. Not many people had passed through these mountains. It was here that they came upon a strange plant, now known as the Rafflesia.The Rafflesia has no leaves, stem or even roots. It is a parasite, growing and living off another plant. It has only one flower which is huge, measuring nearly a metre across. The flower only blooms after five years of growth. The plant gives off a nasty smell, like the rotting of fruit. The smell attracts flies to it which then help to pollinate the flower.The flower has five brick-red petals with spots of a lighter colour on them. The petals form a cup-like container in the middle of the flower. This cup can hold up to a gallon and a half of water.The local people call this plant the Devils Betel Box. Scientifically, it is named Rafflesia arnoldi in honour of Sir Raffles and Dr Arnold.The Rafflesia can only be found in Indonesia and Sabah, Malaysia. It is a rare flower and not many people get to see it in full bloom. There are very few such flowers and it is now an endangered flower. Some of the flowers rot before they can bloom while others are damaged by animals as the flowers grow on the ground.
