Sketch Design Development

We took the weaving pattern from the takraw ball in Movdule 1 and combines the design sketches: “DNA and Cocoon” as we progressed into Module 2. We took forward the idea of DNA weave in creating a buffer zone between user and their surrounding, as the arching/spiralling effect can achieve a larger personal space. The weaving and the cocoon allowed more surface area to be covered on the user whilst being able to create different effects based on how it is weaved. We also began mapping out how our model will fit on the body.

Refined Sketch Model of Sleeping Pod

This process was very important because we realize that the material work differntly from what we wanted it to. This feedbackinto our developed design. We found that the thicker rattan were harder to control but it gives a strong structure for our model. This would be a good bone structure.

What is the concept of the precedent? [Maximum 5 key words]

In this precedent, dimensionality is created by the overlapping of the glass and a sense of dynamism with it going in different direction.

Precedent applied to design

The overlapping of the glass sculpture can hopefully be achieved by using multiple weave layer and bending it. We can sculpt our model using the rattan as it is more flexible when wet and will hold that form when it is dry.

How can you use this precedent to influence your design ?

Prototype

We first weave it on a flat plane. The structure holds its shape as the strands are able to push against each other and hold its position. This allows us to cut out the excess bit fol-lowing the curvevature we want

Testing Effects

Using three layers of weaving mat creates density, screening and aggressive shapes which offers protection to personal space. The weaving structure is resilietn which ensures that there is enough support to the user’s neck and head, the flexibility of the rattan structure is not too rigid and allows for enough head movement.
