The Divine Lorraine Hotel was once a luxury hotel designed for the wealthy elite. In 1948, Major J. Divine transformed the Divine Lorraine to a habitat of the poor, and a place to practice his Whole-person approach as a part of the Civil Rights Movement. The project will be an attempt to practice the Whole-person approach again with a more autonomous and sustainable way. The businesses before were vulnerable because of the competition from surrounding rising businesses. In order to establish its own critical competitiveness, the project must be site-sensitive and push its advantage to an extreme.

The project stands on the south side of the Divine Lorraine Hotel with abundant sunlight. Using solar energy from the site to self-supply the whole project, the living expenses is significantly lowered. With such advantage, the project could establish a competitive core for the poor around the area, providing them chances for an easier-start live and business.

A protective solar-panel shell covers the south face of the project. The shape of the shell is well crafted to fit the sun trajectory during a year. Those solar panels can independently adjust its angle according to the sun position during the day, maximizing energy gain and enhancing air circulation and light conditions inside the building, and creating an elegant periodic movement in reaction of nature.

Energy gathered from the shell converges at the twin central cores, then distributed smartly into each living unit. Abundant energy is stored in the battery packs on the back of each unit. These inflated battery packs signify all the value this machine-like building has achieved.

The project tries to blur the boundary between land and water and weave different carnival activities together. Using the strategy of peel and weave, the original uniformly descending terrain were peeled up / down, creating fluctuating topography either steepen or flatten, and spaces either intensified or relaxed.

By peeling the terrain down, water travels beneath the building, weaving with the programs. Peeling the traffic and foot walk towards the site, the flow of human activities begins to merge and weave, potentially opens more dialogue between artificial and nature, neighbor and site.

The three main threads for the theme “Carnival” - Pools, Theaters and Garden - deform along with the changing terrain. Peeling the programs forward and back, the dynamic theater, exciting aqua competition, and serene garden encounters and weaves in this carnival project. Finally, the project works as a nexus weaving the city, water and programs together, breaking the boundaries between water and land, dynamic and static.

Walls define space. Closed walls define a certain space, but when there is an opening, the space behind the wall is also indicated. Motivated by “something behind the wall”, the project tried to discover the relationship between spaces and obstacles, and finally through a generation strategy based on obstacles, to build a pavilion serving different purposes.

Center open space

The glossy shell structure stands surrounding the sharp, shining tree trunks, creating an open, bright and dramatic space for people-gathering activities, such as celebration or party.

Intermediatecirculation space

Inside the shell structure, people sit, walk, talk and eat in the circulation space. The soft, warm shell and care-fully opened windows make the space comfortable like home.activities, such as celebration or party.

Inner enclosed space

In the midst of the shell, there are specially protected spaces that are totally insulated from external light. With the glowing light from the tree roots, people enjoy the precious serenity.
