ELECTRONS AS WAVES• Electrons behave more like waves on

a vibrating string than like particles.

• Louis DeBroglie thought of this idea.

Atomic Orbitals

• Orbitals are representatives of the shape of space occupied by an atom’s electrons.

• Orbitals have no definite shape or place that they are supposed to be.

• Typically, we draw orbitals which show us the space in which the electron will be 95% of the time

Photons• A photon is a unit or quantum of light • A photon is an elementary particle that has no mass and does

not decompose• A photon’s different energy determines an electron’s level• The gaining of a photon increases the level• The energy is associated with the wavelength of the light• A high energy photon is related to a short wavelength• Photon emissions produce the light found in neon signs,

through neon gas• The wavelength of the visible light determines the color

Energy Levels

Energy levels is the level of energy of an atom. The further our from the nucleus the atom is the higher or greater the energy is. When they change energy levels a lot, that is the exciting or ground state. It is like a building the higher the floor the higher the energy is and the lower the floor the less the energy is. There are a total of 7 levels of energy. Whichever level you are at the atom orbits the Nucleus.

Firework’s Color• Various chemical elements mixed in with the

gunpowder produce a wide variety of colors. Sodium, as found in common salt, emits a strong yellow color when it burns. Copper causes a blue color. Chemical compounds containing the elements lithium and strontium produce a red color. Compounds containing barium burn green. Compounds containing the element calcium burn orange.

• When the chemicals for two different colors are mixed, they make different colors.

Trey

Max Plank’s Quantum Model

• The quantum theory originated from the study of the interactions of radiation and matter.

• The Quantum theory is about the nature of matter.

• Plank’s constant was that energy isn’t continuous.

Tyler

Niels Bohr

• Born October 7, 1885• Son of Christian Bohr, physiologist/professor• Niels Bohr was inspired by his father• Physics Master Degree in 1909 and Doctor’s

degree in 1911• He won the Nobel Prize for his model in 1922 Libbi

How Bohr’s Model Came Along

• Bohr did research with Rutherford and Planck• He came up with the Bohr model based off of

his research with those two• Bohr came up with the model called, “Bohr’s

Model”• Later his idea was combined with the Quantum

Theory• Now the combination of the two pieces of

information are proved true

Ground State/Excited State

Lane

The ground state of an electron, the energy level it normally occupies, is the state of lowest energy for that electron.

There is also a maximum energy that each electron can have and still be part of its atom. Beyond that energy, the electron is no longer bound to the nucleus of the atom and it is considered to be ionized.

Electrons do not stay in excited states for very long- they soon return to their ground states, emitting a photon with the same energy as the one that was absorbed.

Light Energy

Each orbital has a specific energy associated with it. For an electron to be boosted to an orbital with higher energy, it must overcome the difference in energy between the orbital it is in, and the orbital to which it is going. What it is saying is the it must absorb a photon that contains precisely that amount of energy, or take exactly that amount of energy from another particle in a collision.
