Get buckets and loadersback to work witheffective on-site repairsIf you have ever repaired worn hingepoints on loader arms or buckets, youknow how difficult it is to cut off theworn area and try to weld on newhinge points while keeping everythinglined up. A better way is to use theClimax Model BB3000 PortableBoring Bar. If the holes are not badlydamaged, you can simply weld themup, attach the Climax Portable BoringBar, and re-bore them to originaldimensions. If the hinge points are sodamaged that the entire area needsto be replaced, weld on newsections with slightly undersizedholes, then quickly re-borethem to original dimensionswhile keeping everything inproper alignment.

Boring Capacity■ Bore from 1-1/2 " to 5" (38 to 127

mm) in diameter, with the toolhead.

■ The 1-1/4" (31.75 mm) diameterbar is 72" (1829 mm) long with 4holes positioned along the bar tohold 3/8" square tool bits in theSAE inch version and 10 mmsquare tool bits in the metricversion.

■ The clamp-on tool heads coverthe 3" to 5" (76 to 127 mm)diameter range.

Get-the-Job-Done Power■ A .6 hp (.45 kW), universal

type motor drives a 7.5:1reduction gear box;produces up to 40 ft-lb (54N-m) at the bar.

■ Bar rotational speed atmaximum horsepower is 58rpm (75 rpm freespeed).

■ Metal removal rate of .3 to .4cubic inches per minute (5to 6.5 cm3/min) in C1018steel.

Compact Design■ The rotational drive extends only

19 inches (483 mm) out from themounting bracket and 14 inches(356 mm) from the bar to the topof the motor. The rotational drivecan be mounted with the motor inany position around the bar ifclearance is a problem.

■ Rotational drive with feed rackand anti-torque scissors weighsonly 35 lb. (16 kg).

Backhoe bucketscan quickly bere-bored.Mountingbrackets adapt todifferentconfigurations.

Design Features

Automatic Power Feed■ Infinitely variable, reversible

power feed has a 10-inch (254mm) stroke. An automatic feedstop mechanism disengages thefeed at the end of the 10" stroke.

■ Feed rate is from 0 to .020" (0 to.50 mm) per revolution.

Setup & OperationSetup cones for quick, accurate centering of the barin the bore.Spherical mounts that can be tack-welded quickly,even when not precisely aligned.Quick-mount rotational drive unit attaches tospherical mount and bar in minutes.

Setup of the Model BB3000 Portable Boring bar is quick and easy. Anexperienced operator can set up the machine in most typical two boreline boring operations in about half an hour (depending on alignmenttolerances). The three main ingredients for the quick setup system are:

Slide the rotationaldrive onto the bar

until the self-aligningmounting collar is firmlyseated on the mountingbracket and lock it in placewith one screw. Elapsedtime: 2 minutes.

With the hand crank,place the rotationaldrive unit so you

have enough stroke for yourfirst boring pass. Tighten therotational drive clampingcollar firmly to lock therotational drive to the bar.Elapsed time: 2 minutes.

Insert a properlyground tool bit into

the tool sleeve in the bar,adjust for depth of cut andlock in place with the setscrew. Elapsed time: 4minutes. For larger diameterboring, the split boring headis clamped onto the bar.

Slide the bar throughthe two holes to be

bored and center it with thesetup cones. The setupcones are seated firmly intothe bore and locked ontothe bar with a set screw.Elapsed time: 4 minutes.

Slide on the spheri-cal mounts with tack

weld plates and tack weldthem to the work-piece.These mounts have spheri-cal bearings so they can bemounted up to 50 out of per-pendicular alignment.Elapsed time: 10 minutes.

Remove the setupcones and replace

the bar. Elapsed time: 5 min-utes. The setup cones willadequately center the bar,unless you have very pre-cise tolerances or need tomove the centerline of thebore slightly. Make final cen-tering adjustments with thejacking screws. And there you are...ready to begin the first boring pass. Total

elapsed time for setup - 27 minutes.

Large loader bucket hinge points five feet (1.5 m) apart wereline bored (using a custom-length bar). Self-aligning bearingbrackets supported the bar near each bore. The 2-inch (51 mm)diameter by 3-inch (76 mm) long holes were bored at a depth of.175 inch (4.5 mm) with a feed rate of .006 inch (1.5 mm) perrevolution at 60 rpm for a metal removal rate of .395 in3/ min.(6.5 cm3/ min.).

Wheel loader arm pin holes The bores were built up bystick welding and were very rough. The Model BB3000 was setup, aligned, two holes 2.75 inches (70 mm) in diameter werebored to original tolerances, and the machine was removed.Total elapsed time: five hours.

Components & Accessories

The Model BB3000 Portable Boring Bar comes complete and ready to bore with all the accessories you willneed for normal operation. Individual components and accessories are available for replacement or whenrequired for some applications.

Boring BarsYou may need additional bars for someapplications. Cut our standard 72-inch (1829 mm)to whatever length you require, or order theoptional 47-inch (1194 mm) bar with nine toolholding positions. Each standard bar comes with4 tool holding positions. Standard SAE inch barsaccept 3/8-inch square tools and the metric barsaccept 10 mm square tools.

Setup ConesReplacement setup cones are available inpolyurethane. The polyurethane cones arelightweight and very tough but can be damagedwith high heat.

Spherical MountsRigidity is very important when using a portableboring bar. You may need additional mountingbrackets to support the bar in applications thathave a long span between bores. The maximumrecommended unsupported distance betweenbearing supports is 30 inches (760 mm). Thesespherical mounting brackets feature self-aligningbearings and can be used to mount the ModelBB3000 Portable Boring Bar or a BortechBorewelder.

Climax-Bortech Interface AccessoriesThese accessories allow you to use BortechAutomatic Borewelders with the Model BB3000Portable Boring Bar. Once the boring bar isaligned with the setup cones, the same sphericalmounting brackets are used to attach theBorewelder. The interface accessories consist ofa mounting ring that clamps on the sphericalmounting bracket, an alignment gauge and abearing removal/insert tool. Switching from boringbar to borewelder is quickly done withoutdisturbing alignment.
