Missouri Indoor Records

...Continued from Page 1...we’re ready to celebrate one more time. It’s worth noting that only top 15 competitors in each event get to go to this thing and we have people in fi ve events, it’s just good stuff.”

Along with Michigan and Stanford, Missouri is one of only three schools to have both distance medley re-lay teams accepted into the NCAA meet. The men’s relay team comprised of Neville Miller (St. Louis, Mo.), Jimmie Jones (Detroit, Mich.), Marcus Mayes (Sand Springs, Okla.), and Ryan Hampton (Liberty, Mo.), reset Missouri’s school record in the event last weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational with a time of 9:35.25. Tipper O’Brien (Kirkwood, Mo.), who led off the Big 12 Champion relay team, will go to Fay-etteville as the relay’s alternate.

The women’s relay made up of Ashley Patten (Clarkston, Mich.), Whittney Stuart (Fort Wayne, Ind.), freshman Trisa Nickoley (Tecumseh, Kan.), and Amanda Bales (Bettendorf, Iowa) gained their season best in early-February with a run of 11:19.46 at the Meyo Invitational, and are the 11 seed. Kris-tin Hansen (Okoboji, Iowa) will join the team as their alternate. Missouri’s last national champion-ship in an event came with the women’s distance medley relay in 2001.

Patten and Nickoley also were accepted into the women’s 800-meter run. Patten earned All-Ameri-ca honors in the event in 2004 as she reached the championship fi nal. Nickoley was named the Big 12 Indoor Freshman of the Year after winning the con-ference title in the 800 and helping the Tigers to victory in the DMR. Patten enters with the eighth-best time from her early-February run of 2:06.54 at the Meyo Invitational.

Sophomore Hans Uldal, 2004 Olympian from Norway, qualifi ed for the meet’s heptathlon last weekend at

the Intermountain Championships in Pocatello, Ida-ho. After glazing a hurdle at the Big 12 Indoor which prevented him from gaining a qualifying mark, Ul-dal had to go to one of the two fi nal heptathlons of-fered in the nation (both in Idaho) before qualifying expired. Uldal’s score from last weekend of 5,437 points stands as the 10th-best mark entering the meet.

Senior Conrad Woolsey (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) was accepted into the men’s shot put with his Big 12 Indoor-winning mark of 63 feet, ¾ inches (19.22m). Woolsey placed eighth at last year’s indoor NCAAs and seventh outdoors in the shot.

Live results from the meet will be posted on ncaa-sports.org. ESPN2 will broadcast a tape-delayed broadcast on Wednesday, March 16, starting at 11 a.m., central. For more information, visit mutigers.com.

NCAA Retracts Nickoley’s 800-meter BidCompetition committee makes clerical error pre-venting freshman from second event

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—The NCAA Track & Field com-mittee informed three coaches around the country on Tuesday of a clerical error they had made while formulating the fi eld for this weekend’s NCAA In-door Championships. One of the three coaches hap-pened to be Missouri’s Dr. Rick McGuire. The Tiger coach was informed that freshman Trisa Nickoley was added to the publicly-released list of entries into the women’s 800-meter run by mistake.

The committee failed to execute a rule relating to the selection of the championship fi eld. As a fi nal consideration to the makeup of the fi eld, the com-mittee looks to see if an athlete already entered in

one event could be entered into another based on being the next athlete on the year’s performers list. The committee may add the entry provided that the makeup of the meet, i.e. additional heats, is not compromised.

Nickoley (Tecumseh, Kan.) along with South Caroli-na’s Shalonda Solomon and Auburn’s Josanne Lucas had already been accepted into the meet in other events and were next on the list in the 800-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, and 60-meter dash, respec-tively. However, the next spot, the 17th, would add a heat to the preliminary competition.

“They just made a mistake,” Dr. Rick McGuire, who served on the NCAA Track & Field Committee from 2001 to 2003, said. “They forgot to check the list and see the problem it would have caused. We actu-ally made this rule while I was on the committee to protect the meet from getting out of hand.”

Nickoley, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, is still en-tered into the women’s distance medley relay pool. Nickoley won Big 12 titles as part of the women’s distance medley relay team and as an individual in the women’s 800

Another late move MU’s Hampton maneuvers way into mile chase.

By MATT NESTOR of the Tribune’s staff Published Thursday, February 24, 2005

There were just too many people. And for almost too long, Ryan Hampton couldn’t find any room.

Through most of the men’s mile run at the Iowa State Classic, Hampton was looking for an opportunity to make a move. As the runners hit the final 125-meter stretch, Hampton was back in eighth place.

It wasn’t his choice. He had nowhere to go. He worked his way into fifth before the final 100 then made his move.

Missouri’s senior, who himself had seemingly come out of nowhere, sprinted past the field to win the race with a season-best time of 4 minutes, 4.14 seconds.

"I had something" for the final stretch, "but I didn’t know if I was going to be able to win," Hampton said. "Just kind of ended up that way.

"You’ve been waiting the whole race to make your move. You’ve been kind of holding back, and then to think you might be able to win, it’s what runners look for, basically. Yeah, it’s definitely an adrenaline rush."

Hampton’s time ranks him fourth in the Big 12 for the indoor season and 29th in the NCAA. He expects to contend for the mile championship when the Missouri track and field teams head to the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships that begin tomorrow in Lincoln, Neb.

Hampton, a three-time all-Big 12 performer, knows all about making late moves. His career was nearly boxed in.

After four years at Liberty High School, Hampton was not a highly recruited athlete. Liberty had a weak track program before Hampton joined

as a freshman. The farthest his team traveled for a meet was to Jefferson City for the Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships.

Hampton was a decent runner, hitting about 4:17 out of high school, but wasn’t highly recruited. He also admits that he didn’t really take other schools’ offers seriously because he had his sights set on attending Missouri. He received a scholarship but was basically a walk-on, assistant coach Jared Wilmes said.

The switch to college turned into another hurdle. Hampton’s "goal" as a freshman was just to keep up with the other runners. That proved to be more difficult than it looked.

"It was definitely a shock," Hampton said. "In high school, I knew people ran a lot faster than me, but I really didn’t get to see it. When you come to college, people run good times all over the place."

Hampton started setting goals for himself. He worked hard on the track and in the classroom. Wilmes estimated that Hampton has achieved a 4.0 grade-point average the past seven semesters and has turned himself into a two-time academic all-American.

The success on the track didn’t come so easily.

"My first two years here were really tough on me, running-wise," Hampton said. "I worked really hard, but I just didn’t feel like I was getting any better. My third year here, I had a breakthrough, kind of. Ever since then, it keeps getting easier to run faster times."

In the cross country season, Hampton improved from a 91st-place finish in the 2001 regionals to an 18th-place finish in 2002. His personal-best indoor mile has dropped from 4:15.82 to a 4:03.30.

Hampton has been focused on this indoor season for a while. He suffered a minor knee injury in the 2003 cross country season after only two races and could not compete. The NCAA denied his request for another year of eligibility. Hampton took the ruling in stride and started training for the track season.

"I was training, and I was healthy. I just didn’t get to race," Hampton said. "I’ve been going for a good two years since I’ve been hurt."

No matter how many minor setbacks Hampton has been through, he’s survived them all.

"He isn’t the guy who came in and was immediately the star," Wilmes said. "He’s the guy people can point to and say, ‘Hey, the guy struggled in the beginning, but he kept persevering, he kept working hard, and he got there.’ "

And now, he’s the guy everyone else is trying to keep up with.

"Funny how that works," he said.

Tiger runners push each other By MATT NESTOR of the Tribune’s staff Published Thursday, February 24, 2005

Missouri freshman Trisa Nickoley knows that if she’s lagging behind during a workout, she’s going to get an earful.

Junior All-American Ashley Patten will turn and order her teammate, "Get up here, T."

Patten knows the importance of having a teammate with her at the front of the pack. For two years, Patten’s had no one who could keep up with her. She’s had to rely on herself emotionally and physically for motivation.

"If you’re having a day where you’re not feeling great and there’s nobody there to tag you along, you might not push yourself as hard," Patten said.

Patten, the Big 12 Conference’s reigning 800-meter champion, and Nickoley begin competition today at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lincoln, Neb.

Nickoley will be taking over the 800 for Missouri this season as Patten moves up to the 1,000. The move will allow the Tigers pick up points in both events for an improved team score. It won’t hurt Missouri’s chances in either event. Patten is tied for the best time in the Big 12 this season in the 800 with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2 minutes, 6.54 seconds - good for fourth in the NCAA. But Nickoley isn’t far behind. The freshman out of Tecumseh, Kan., is fourth in the Big 12 and 10th in the NCAA with a 2:07.45.

"To have two kids in the same event in the top 10 currently … it’s exciting," assistant track and field coach Rebecca Wilmes said.

Patten, a native of Clarkston, Mich., has a good lead in the 1,000. Her time of 2:46.05 is nearly two seconds better than the No. 2 runner, Kansas State’s Lysaira Roman-Del Valle.

"My strength’s gotten a little bit better," Patten said. "And we were looking at our team aspect and where we can have all the races covered."

Nickoley has seemingly been right alongside Patten since the pair met in 2003 at the USA Track and Field Junior Championships at Stanford. The Missouri coaching staff was already eyeing Nickoley, who had run a 2:10 as a freshman at Shawnee Heights High School. So at the national meet, Wilmes prodded Patten to give a good showing.

"She was like, ‘We’re recruiting this girl. If you go out there and win, maybe she’ll come to our school,’ " Patten said.

Patten won the race. Nickoley was second. That cinched the deal.

Nickoley, who’s father bought her a Missouri track T-shirt her freshman year of high school, chose to compete at Missouri over Kansas State.

"I knew she was from Missouri, and I was still kind of looking at Missouri, so I had it in my head that we could possibly be teammates some day," Nickoley said. "I thought it was really cool that we came 1 and 2 then.

"That was a big deciding factor. I wanted to train with somebody that was the same caliber but was a little better so I could improve and learn from her training."

It’s been a good combination. Patten, a cross country runner, is more strength-oriented, while Nickoley is speed-oriented. They have learned from each other as the situations dictate. They’re running similar workouts to what they’ve been used to, but each is getting faster and performing better.

"We run the same workout every year," Patten said. "Friday, we ran the fastest 3-by-300 workout that I’ve ever run at this university. Running alongside her is just great, because we’ll both feed off of each other."

Not so ‘scrawny’ anymore Walk-on turned star has become team’s heart and soul

By BRANDT MERRITT February 27, 2005

Neville Miller thought he was going to die after the first day of track practice his freshman year.

The wake-up call was too early, and the thought of a year without intramural flag football was too much for him to handle.

Having to run a few miles didn’t help, either.

He told distance coach Jared Wilmes he was thinking about quitting that day, but Wilmes encouraged him to give it a month and see if he felt the same.

Miller gave it a month.

“A month turned into now,” Miller said.

Now a senior and MU’s co-captain, he is the epitome of what the track team believes can happen. A good person who does the right thing every day will have great success, in life and on the track.

It took Miller some time to find that success, but the journey that began years ago in St. Louis is reaching its high point.

Miller came in ninth in the state meet his senior year at Vianney High School. His best time of one minute 57 seconds in the 800-meter run did not catch the eye of any college program.

No schools recruited him, and Miller focused more on finding a school with lots of scholarships and an atmospheric science major than one that would let him run track.

Missouri had Miller’s priorities of aid and academics, and a surprising bonus made his decision to come to Columbia easy.

“His high school coach had kind of contacted me and said, ‘This kid wants to come to Missouri and thinks he wants to run,’” MU track distance coach Jared Wilmes said.

Wilmes said he looked up Miller’s times from high school and

thought there was a chance he could turn out to be a good runner. He offered a chance to walk on the team, and the partnership has worked wonders for Miller and MU track.

Miller’s personality took over early and preceded the success on the track that would come after months of training and dedication.

“The profound statement is that he permeates, his person just permeates the entire team and the entire environment,” coach Rick McGuire said. “And it has, kind of for as long as he’s been here.”

McGuire said everyone knew Miller right away, but Miller recalls there being some adjustments in the beginning.

“I felt kind of out of the loop,” Miller said. “I don’t know why, but I just separated myself and felt like I was so much slower than everyone else.”

McGuire described Miller as “pretty scrawny” when he first arrived at MU, and Miller said he had never spent time working out until he got to college. A commitment to hitting the weights and a growth spurt changed Miller from a scrawny freshman to a quick runner with an ideal body for distance sprints.

Working out with two of MU’s best all-time runners, Derrick Peterson and

Timothy Dunne, helped, too.

He consistently improved his time in the 800-meter run, and then toward the end of last year began a breakout campaign that he said he doesn’t want to end any time soon.

“This year I’m hoping to keep it going,” Miller said.

He is keeping it going. He set a personal best time at the Iowa State Classic Feb. 12, running the 800-meters in 1:48.46. That was good enough for third best in MU history, and the faster outdoor season has not started yet.

Miller’s success is not much of a surprise to those who have known him at MU. Teammate Marcus Mayes said Miller works twice as hard as everyone else, and McGuire, Wilmes and Peterson attributed Miller’s success to doing the right things day in and day out.

Miller’s work ethic extends far off the track, though.

Greeno Invitational, third on the team. Outdoor: He qualified for the 800-meter final at the Big 12 Championships, taking ninth place. Season bests: 1500m, 3:54.91, Missouri Relays. Indoor: He placed 10th at the Big 12 Championships with season best of 2:26.28. He earned All-Big 12 honors with seventh place 4x400 relay team.

2003: Cross Country: Miller ran for the Tigers in the Bradley Open and finished fourth on the team. Outdoor: He qualified for NCAA Regionals in the 800-meter run by running 1:50.32 at the Big 12 Championships, and he had a total of three top five finishes in the 800m. Indoor: Miller was All-Big 12 in the 800m after finishing fifth at Big 12 Conference meet (1:52.13).

2002: Cross Country: Miller ran two meets for the Tigers, finished 23rd at Missouri Cross Country Challenge, and made the Academic All-Big 12 first team. Outdoor: He ran a personal-best, 1:52.40 in the 800m at the Tom Botts Invitational to place third. Indoor: Ran his best of the season in the 800m (1:54.93) at the Iowa State Invitational.

2001: Cross Country: Redshirt season.

Not only does Miller act as a leader on the track, he also keeps up morale by entertaining his teammates.

Page 2 of 3Not so ‘scrawny’ anymore - Columbia Missourian

2/27/2005http://www.digmo.com/sports/print.php?ID=12396

He carries about a 3.8 grade point average and is working on a dual major in atmospheric science and communication.

Mayes, a sophomore, said Miller’s priorities off the track rub off on the rest of the team.

“I’ll call him up and ask what he’s about to do,” Mayes said. “And he’ll say, ‘I’m about to study.’

If you hadn’t planned on studying, him saying that just might make you be like, ‘Yeah, I think I’m going to study, too.’”

Miller’s love for track is rivaled by his love for weather. Although he would like to be a chief meteorologist for a TV station one day, he enjoys getting out and chasing a storm occasionally.

“I’m a weather nerd,” Miller said. “We go out there and get pretty into it.”

Besides a weather man, Miller said he still has hopes of making it to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. McGuire has compared him to Peterson, a 2004 Olympian, in the past and said a post-collegiate career is in Miller’s future.

“He should want to, he does want to, and he will,” McGuire said. “We’ll work hard to help him.”

Miller said the comparisons to Peterson are too much for him right now, but his goal is to follow in one of his mentor’s footsteps.

Wilmes summed up Miller’s progression and potential well.

“A year ago I probably wouldn’t have said (he could go post-collegiate),” Wilmes said. “I don’t know how good he’s going to be, but if he keeps getting better and keeps doing these things, I think he’s got a lot of things in front of him.”
